We stayed at Hale Makamae for 3 nights in January 2011. John and Petra were excellent hosts- they gave valuable suggestions for activities and dining. The breakfasts were very good- coffee & juice, fresh fruit, and some entree (eggs, french toast etc.). Our room was very nice- we even got a free upgrade to the one with a kitchenette! We...

We loved our 3-night stay at Hale Makemae in mid-December 2010! Petra and John were excellent hosts and really made us feel at home. We stayed in the Garden Suite which was quite roomy and very nicely appointed. The property is exquisitely maintained like a garden and is very beautiful. John was nice enough to take some family photos for...

Hale Makamae is in a wonderful, quiet location. We were able to take an early morning volcano heli tour and take in the hot flowing lava by night, all just a few minutes away. The Lania suite at the B&B was spacious and had a fully equiped kitchen, plus a great bisto nearby. Breakfast was light and tasty. The pounding...

Hale Makamae is a tropical paradise in every respect. Tiny frogs sing a melodic chorus with the intermitent rain adding to the music of a botanical garden setting. The songs of the I'iwi and other birds greet us in the morning, and the thoughts of brewed Kona coffee and Portugese sweet bread French toast hurry us into breakfast. The food...

We wanted to stay in the Hilo area and selected the Hale Makamae B&B because they offered a two bedroom suite for a very reasonable price. Petra and John's accomodations were excellent, with delicious breakfasts and great suggestions for day trips in the area. I especially enjoyed seeing Petra's large collection of unusual orchids. The highlight of our stay was...

My friend and I stayed at Hale Makamae for three nights at the end of December 2010. The B&B's owners made us feel welcomed and gave us great advice on how to make the most of our time on the Big Island. Their warmth and friendliness, together with the beauty of the nature surrounding the B&B made the trip a...

My biggest wishes for my 3 night Big Island stay were: 1) warm and gracious hosts 2) rain forest feel with beach close by 3) easy access to active lava flow 4) nearby, but not necessarily in Hilo 5) low cost 6) yummy food ....I encountered all of that and so much more at Hale Makamae. My trip just wouldnt...

Nice place to stay for viewing lava from volcano. The room was nice with a kitchen and two bedrooms. Only one bathroom. The lanai overlooked a great garden. The frogs were loud at night but not unpleasent.

Judy and I enjoyed our visit immensely and would, and have, highly recommended this B&B to our friends. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and our hosts were most pleasant and helpful, welcoming and gracious. Petra pointed out many local sites, tours and restaurants available in the area, things you don't see or might miss in the brochures. Her breakfast was...

Perta and John were great hosts. We had to work one evening, and they let us use the breakfast area and wireless internet. We enjoyed visiting with them and the other guests that came through over the evening. We learned a lot about the area and things we should see. Petra made us a wonderful breakfast each day with included...
