Staff was friendly and welcoming. Our room was large, but located on busy noisy street that was never quiet.. No screens on windows so bugs fly in. Bed was very uncomfortable so much that our backs were in pain. Shower has feel of sandblaster. Birds in the lobby cages can be noisy, and if you are near the bathroom you...

Stepping into this hostel feels like you've stepped back 100 years. The building itself is ok- a bit creaky & dusty but it's a hostel & that can be forgiven. Seems to allow longer term boarders that are a little on the wacky side- some sleep continuously and expect absolute silence during there forever sleep- so you feel uncomfortable in...

The rooms are very clean, the staff is very friendly, and it's in close proximity to the city center. The kitchen is a social place and I especially enjoyed tasting the exotic fruit that various travelers picked up at the local farmers market. Would definitely stay here again!

I've stayed here twice--once in 2003 and once in 2015. It's a pleasure if just for the opportunity to spend time in one of Hilo's historic downtown buildings. Both the exterior and the interior of the building exude historic character. The owner and the staff have a lot of experience dealing with all kinds of guests; they seem very astute...

Our stay was 4 nights in a dorm room. We slept in a double bed together, so they put the price down, which was very nicely done. Then the first night we had a lady drinking in bed all night, trying to get private with two guys. One of them wasnt even supposed to be in our room. Managements reaction...

What a pleasant surprise, haven't stayed in a hostel for years but we were really surprised how comfortable and clean it was. We had a private room with a really comfortable bed and delightfully decorated room, fresh flowers in our room, gorgeous! the facilities were fabulous and the staff were amazing, they were so helpful with suggestions of where to go...

The hostel has so much character, is clean, with friendly staff and very close to everything. Loved Hilo, it's how I imagined Hawaii should be. We ate at Pineapples Restaurant, (5 star in my book) with live music. Pineapples is walking distance to the hostel. We kayaked with whales and turtles. Magnificent. A must stop when you visit Hawaii. Great location! Great staff!!! Good Hostel. I've only been there once and can say it is a right proper hostel. The restroom, kitchen and showers were well maintained and very clean. The only real letdown was that most of the clientele were 40+. Not sure if this was a fluke...or a regular theme here. Kinda cuts down on the socializing....

Professional, welcoming, organised, clean... Has all the makings of the ideal hostel. Old school decor, boarding house vibe, well kept kitchen, bathrooms and dorms. Friendly and thorough staff. Cos the place is so well run, plus the safe, homey and placid atmosphere, it tends to attract the older solo travellers and school/college groups from time to time... Can detract from...
