Location is convenient. Common areas are well kept. Staff is courteous. Suggestions: Beds are too soft. Hotel needs to reconsider housekeeping services policy. Rates are in the $200 range and to not have housekeeping replace towels and supplies is inconvenient and unacceptable. During a three-day stay, no change of linen, vacuuming or replenshing supplies unless we called to ask for it. By the third day, we ran out of toilet paper and had to call. COVID cannot be an excuse for lack of service. Create a sign that says, Room unoccupied, please service, and at least service it every other day.

Our Ohana (family) just returned from our Hilo Hawaiian "stay-cation" experience. This was likely our 4th stay within the last year as we enjoy exploring the magic that is the Island of Hawaii and the pandemic has driven us to stay and support local businesses. Unfortunately, it may be our last. We booked our reservations at the Kamaaina rate which was to include a free upgraded room if available. At the desk we asked and the reflexive response was that of surprise, uncertainty, and negativity. When we asserted ourselves it was only then that we were upgraded as if a favor was granted to us. The room was clean, large and accommodating but needed renovations (similar to all of the Hilo Hotels) as it was upgraded to the Ocean View one bedroom suite as I had booked and purchased the Banyan Suite. Unfortunately the reason for disappointment outside of the check in experience included the following:

1. All restaurant/bar service closed.
2. Gym closed.
3. Pool closed.
4. The room adjacent to us (448?) had a large loud hotel party that did not settle down until 430 am.

With a background of insuring consumer satisfaction (patients in the medical industry) I suggest the following:

Please be transparent. If accommodations are being restricted or closed due to the current crises, say so clearly rather than waiving the resort fee as part of the special rate. This would include the closed food/beverage services and pool.

We made no effort to notify the on duty manager of the disrespectful neighbors and we realize that this type of behavior "happens."

That said, we hope that the comments although critical are productive so that future return Kamaaina guests are treated fairly and with open arms.

Mark.

The resort has a good location with a panoramic views of Hilo bay and Mauna Kea. But now it needs some major renovation. The hardware needs to be fixed in the bathrooms, carpet is old and the bedding is thin and yellow. The resort fee includes a wifi that is not working and you have to pay extra for a faster one. Oh and there was a cockroach in the bedroom upon our arrival.
On a good note the staff is friendly and quite helpful.

After my fiasco with the Grand Naniloa Hotel (see my review of that hotel), I stayed here instead. This hotel is right down the street from the Grand Naniloa Hotel and I would highly recommend staying here instead. The staff are friendly and the hotel reminds of the "old Hawaii" that I grew up in. Milton, at the Front Desk, was so helpful to me and my husband when we checked in. I was very flustered and angry since I had just come from the Grand Naniloa. Rooms are spacious and the hotel lobby is beautiful. Walking distance to Coconut Island. They also have under ground parking with elevators that lead right up to your room so you don't have to get rained on. In Hilo, this is a big deal. Especially if you're a shopper, like me, and are always coming back to the hotel with packages. :) There are two restaurants in the lobby and they give you plastic water bottles that you can fill with filtered water when you check in. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Our Deluxe Ocean View room was clean, comfortable, quiet and provided a great view of the bay and Coconut Island. The staff were very helpful. We appreciated the COVID related proceedures. At check-in we were informed of the housekeeping arrangements and we found the staff very responsive to requests for fresh towels. The hotel restaurant was a convienent option for breakfast with a varied menu and prices comparable to other local breakfast choices. We enjoyed daytime walks in Liliuokalani Gardens, Coconut Isand and under the Banyan trees along Banyan Drive - all adjoining the hotel property.

This was a comfortable hotel that was clean and convenient to everything! Really enjoyed that it was next door to Coconut Island. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We were told there would not be daily housekeeping due to Covid which was fine with us as we didn't want anyone except our family in and out of our room. We were given instructions and extra bags for used towels and for trash, and when we called, new towels were brought up quickly. Dining is limited on property but if you have a car, it was easy to drive to restaurants or grocery stores in the area. Beds were a bit soft as my husband had a sore back by the end of the stay. We asked for a late check out but was unable to get one due to a full hotel but the front desk was nice enough to extend our check out time another hour which was actually helpful. We also stowed our luggage as our flight was not until late in the evening. Really great staff throughout the property including the restaurant which we had breakfast the first morning there.

My husband and I stayed three wonderful nights at the Hilo Hawaiian. We had the ocean view room looking over the Coconut island, and the view was nothing short of spectacular! We spent a lot of time on the balcony/lanai. Although we did not get daily house keeping service due to COVID-19, the house keeping Dept was responsive to our request for clean towels and coffee, etc.

I especially appreciated kind and wonderful staff. I would stay again when we visit Hilo!

This hotel is terrible, probably one of the worst we have stayed in (Except Motel 8). The chair fabric was aging. The room carpet was unclean. They wont clean the room, they have ridiculous level of steps before you can get new towel, which also have to be requested between 10AM and 3PM, who stays in a hotel during that time period? The resort fee is totally pointless, have no amenities what so ever, restaurants are terrible. The underground parking lot was flooded after a rain during our stay. The balcony had green most growing on the floor.

There must have been new staff members behind the counter to check guests into their rooms. We changed rooms three times. Once, we were given a room with a king bed. We had reserved a room with two beds. So, we moved for the third time. The first room we were given was too close to the noise of the parking lot. The third room had two beds and was quieter so, that was the room we ended up with. It was okay, except the bathtub didn’t properly drain and the door handle was broken. We were told at check in there would be no room service. Granted, we were staying just two nights but, considering the “resort” fee we were charged ($29 a day), I would have expected someone would service our room. Each bottle of shampoo, conditioner and body wash contained only 1.35 fluid ounces! For two people for two days! And we received the following for our $29 per day resort fee: Local, toll free and long distance mainland calls; a local newspaper, if available (the Hawaii Tribune Herald); wifi; EVEN self parking!!!!!!!!, hand sanitizer in the lobby!!!!!!, a BFA Free Logo’d bottle (free advertising for the hotel, which we declined), use of a filtered water refill station, use of the fitness center, pool and sun deck and in room coffee/tea packet (one per day). One of the few pluses was you could print your boarding pass from a kiosk in the lobby. And there were no saves in the room, only at the front desk. This wasn’t clear when I booked the room.
With the resort fee, the charge was over $200 per night. A disappointing experience. It is unlikely we will stay here again.

The view was lovely from the deluxe ocean view side. The hotel was very close to a lot of eateries and activities. It is also very close to the airport which we rented a car from so it was absolutely no worries getting to the airport for our departing flight. The staff was so nice and accomodating. We were so grateful for the filtered water dispenser and complimentary water bottle. We also needed a microwave so they brought one up to us. Overall we had a ton of fun and the hotel made it a 10/10 experience.

Yes, it’s right next to a huge park and an island. There is a road that circles that area, but you can avoid it + it’s not all that busy.
