A great location at the fishing pier along the boardwalk. The location allows easy walking access to tons of restaurants and activities...and of course just steps to the beach.
The rooms are all beachside with balconies and there is parking available onsite for a small fee. Miss Betty made checkin a breeze and provided great service. Even if your room isn’t ready early, you are able to pre-checkin and get a parking pass for the garage. There is a restroom in the lobby you can use to change in and then hit the beach. The hotel has 2 restaurants on site, along with gift shop with bike rental (see separate review in the bike rental). You can get a 10% discount at the Oceans bar by showing your room key.
Note, if you have young children or like to retire early, the live band at the beachside bar plays until 10 pm. It can be pretty loud if you’re trying to sleep. Request a room at the other end for the least amount of noise.
With the current restrictions in place, breakfast is a grab-n-go bag only. Each included a bottle of water, pastry bar, apple, and blueberry muffin. You could also get a fresh yogurt and/or instant oatmeal.
For beachside on a holiday weekend, the price was very reasonable.
The room was large and clean. Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel staff was friendly and accomdating, with particular gratitude to Jasmine and Betty ,who went above and beyond during all of my families interactions with them. The room was clean when we arrived.. more on that further in this review.. and the oceanfront views breathtaking, especially in the hours before and at dawn. The hotel is literally steps from the Pier and beach, and an easy walk to almost all the attractions and nightlife. The concerns were twofold. First, be advised that there will be NO housekeeping visits during your stay. If you are solo or with a partner, and only staying a night or two this should not be an issue. However, if you are a larger group, and staying 3 or more days, the challenge to keep your room clean and stocked could distract from your trip. I understand COVID 19 protocols are limiting what hotels can do, however it seems as if some better procedures could be thought out to both keep the staff safe and the guests rooms cleaner DURING a stay. The second concern were the grab and go breakfasts. They were at best disappointing and not overly satisfying, particularly when the costs of a multi night stay are factored in. If COVID 19 restraints become a long term reality, I would suggest the hotel management perhaps work with the abundant restaurants in the area about offering either generously discounted or specific dollar amount vouchers . The goodwill that could be generated for all would be worth the modest costs both hotel and restaurants would entail. The bottom line is you will find your stay will probably meet your expectations, however with some more through re hotel procedures your visit might exceed expectations in the future. My family will return, and we are confident the next visit will produce the WOW factor we normally expect to have.

For the most part the hotel is great as it usually is. However, this time there were a few issues the shower curtain had mold on it and housekeeping was no where to be seen. We stayed 2 nights and had to ask at the front desk for more towels and toilet paper as housekeeping never came and serviced the room or asked if we needed anything. Aside from the mold on the shower curtain the room and hotel were clean. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. On our first morning there we went to get our grab and go breakfast (no full breakfast because of Covid-19) which we knew and didn't care about, but when we went to get breakfast we were asked our room number and when I told the girl working breakfast she told me we had already gotten our breakfast. In fact we hadn't someone told them our room number I assume by mistake. We got our breakfast but the process left a lot of room for mistakes and errors and we spent more time than was needed getting our food. Overall it was a good trip just some small things that I am not used to at the Best Western Sandcastle since it is our usual hotel. We will definitely be back!

Please note that we stayed during covid-19 and they do not clean rooms each day, which we were not notified of but it makes sense. The view and location is excellent, the advertised free breakfast and free parking is a boon on the ocean front. However, the breakfast is a paper bag with a pop tart, muffin, banana and a small bottle of water, which I don't believe represent to anything close to what they normally serve during non-pandemic times. I would have paid more for a better hotel and quieter guests with a bagged breakfast that we would enjoy more out of. The big issue is noise, I thought I was smart to ask for a room away from the elevators, but there is a restaurant on ocean side that features live band on both Friday and Saturday night that plays til 11pm and continues to offer some music into the wee bits of the morning, as well as a DJ on the street side of the building. We were on the 4th floor but I'm sure that even if you were on the top floor it would still be loud. We did not sleep that well both nights. On the 2nd night, we were woken up at 3:30am from hearing loud music that sounded like karokee, I can't tell if it came from the bar downstairs or someone's room. For a hotel that advertises "100% smoke-free hotel", you could probably get high from just hanging out in your balcony, both from other guests nearby and from the lower levels. This is not family friendly at all, as a single guy, maybe, but as a family, we won't be returning and will be paying more for Hyatt or Marriott if we ever return to the VB oceanfront area again.
The front desk staff were very friendly, the cleaning lady on our floor had an attitude, as in we inconvenienced her by asking for more towels since they were not freshening up the room each day. A gentle reminder that we are all grateful to be open and to be working would do a lot of good here. The covid stuff wasn't as bad as the BLM protests and black power pride displayed almost to the detriment of the movement based on how people present themselves with their clothing (or lack thereof) and language used in their music played on bluetooth speakers for everyone to hear. I'm sure it's for some people, but the overall value and experience, I would pass next time.

Best Western took over Sandcastle and it is now the Best Western Plus Sandcastle Beachfront and it is amazing. The property is currently under renovations, but is still operational ( I think by from now to March the renovations will be done). Betty, Mike, and all the staff are friendly and readily available at all times. Parking is readily available on the property. The ground floor has fireplaces with sitting area and tables, a breakfast area to sit and eat continental breakfast (we did not eat but they have to go bags), coffee area, and additional lounging areas. Ocean 14 is a is a restaurant/live music located on the property. On the second floor there is gym that faces the ocean/beach/pier (wonderful view), indoor pool area with a large hot tub, and an adjacent lounge area with chairs. The rooms have faux hardwood floors which I love because of allergies. Recommend staying in the 1 king size room with hot tub (room 901), because the view is beautiful, the room is spacious, the bathroom is LARGE with 2 glass bowl sinks, and a roomy, clean, and working hot tub. We plan on visiting this location again. Thank you Ms. Betty for a wonderful stay and Irma (housekeeping) for an immaculate room.

So I had booked the room through a third party that wasn't offering refunds and we went anyways with some extra Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer. The hotel on Sunday and the beachfront had some life. By Monday it was a ghost town. It was surreal. The hotel did have hand sanitizer on each floor and in four locations in the lobby. The breakfast was bagged with non perishables. Overall the hotel was great under the circumstances.

There are lots of hotels in Virginia Beach. I liked the fact that the rooms were oceanfront with balconies. Like most beach front hotels maintenance and cleanliness can be difficult. The pool was closed and there were several renovation projects going on. Furthermore, post covid travel has made routine reviews difficult especially housekeeping and breakfast service. In general I would say they have done an above average job, especially with the breakfasts. This is an older hotel that has been maintained fairly well. The bedding is due for a change and the walls could use a new coat of paint but in general it serves well. My biggest complaint is the charge for parking and the safe which I was not informed of at check in. The location is great with lots of great views at the pier and boardwalk.

We traveled to Va Beach on a spur of the moment trip the weekend of May 15, the first week of Phase 1 implementation since this COVID-19 crisis began. The hotel was clean, with constant cleaning happening the whole time we were there, and the staff was wonderful to work with and attended to any need we had. Ocean's 14, the on-site restaurant, was terrific as well and the atmosphere was a much needed break from the intensities of today's current events. The room was very clean and the balcony was a welcomed treat. The Virginia Beach Pier is steps from the hotel which made my husband the fisherman very happy. The indoor pool was not in use due to COVID-19 regulations, however they were working on updating it for the eventual reopening. Bagged breakfasts were implemented due to not being able to provide continental breakfast which was very nice to be able to enjoy breakfast in the room. All in all, my husband and I had a terrific time and will be returning soon for another respite.

Because of the virus, we disinfected the room & cleaned all of the services upon arriving. I didn't know what to expect since some of the reviews complained their rooms were dirty. Ours was spotless. The only bit of dirt was on the floor, but it wasn't bad at all, minor. Yes it was disappointing no pool or breakfast, other than the brown bag, but that wasn't the hotels fault & we made the choice to travel. I didn't mind not having room service. When I called for more clean towels & shampoo, they arrived within minutes. The location was perfect by the pier.
We would definitely stay here again!

I stayed here last night as a mini vacation. It's located directly off the beach on 14th street. Everything fun is within walking distance from the hotel. It also has its own private parking garage, which is super convient( not hard to find a spot, not heavily crowded, very cleanly area). As far as the hotel itself, it was clean. You can tell they are really following the Covid cleaning guidelines. The whole hotel room smelled like lemons, not in an overpowering way, however. They also had social distancing markers on the floor for if you have to stand at line for breakfast or at the desk. As far as the staff, they were all super friendly and helpful. The room I booked was the King Suite-1. It was incredibly nice and spacious. I was really not expecting all of it. The room had an upstairs and a downstairs. On thé upstairs portion was a living room, two bathrooms, and the separate bedroom. In the living room you have a view of the city, as well as, a couch and tv to relax. The bedroom had a closet, a dresser, a tv, mini fridge, kureg, desk, and a VERY comfy bed. From the bedroom you had a beach view from both big windows. The door off the room goes out onto the balcony. If you go down the stairs you'll see another couch and tv and a small kitchen. The kitchen has a little counter, a sink, microwave, coffee maker, and a fridge. The two of us really didn't know what to do with all the space haha. After our night there, we got up to go get the complimentary breakfast they had provided. We had to wait in line for a few minutes, but it wasn't terrible. The options they had were great. They had great variety and it was actually really good. Before we checked out we decided to stop by the pool for a swim. Due to Covid, you have to book it 30 minutes ahead of time at the desk so that there isn't too many people in there. Overall this was just what we needed and I'm grateful that i chose Best Western! I will be back and I definitely recommend.
