The Founders Inn and Spa is frequently celebrated for its professional and friendly service, with staff members who often go the extra mile. Its inviting and historical ambiance, combined with classic charm and modern touches, has garnered much appreciation from guests. The convenient location near Virginia Beach is a bonus, although opinions on the area's quality vary. While the hotel's amenities, including lush grounds and pools, are generally a hit, some facilities may require maintenance. Rooms are well-regarded for their cleanliness and space, but some visitors missed having in-room coffee. Opinions on value differ, with some guests finding it a comfortable stay worth their money, while others have faced payment issues and desired more recent updates.

It’s been over 15 years since I went to the Founders Inn for the first time and they did not disappoint. They are still very guest satisfaction oriented and the grounds are beautiful. Rarely do I have no cons to write about for a hotel stay but other than pillows being too far for my liking, I have nothing negative to say or any suggestions to improve. My stay was fabulous and the staff was very attentive.

Had trouble with the digital key, was never offered a regular key, shampoo and conditioner in the shower were used when I got into the hotel room, was charged double the amount for incidentals per night and when I questioned the charge I got attitude from the gentlemen on the phone. On Monday morning the cleaning crew was letting doors slam shut. Other than this the stay was okay, however I may not be back.

twdyoda5494, We are very sorry to hear about the issues that you experienced while you were here. We recently added Digital Key, and like any new system, there are sometimes growing pains and we are sorry it happened to you. We have shared your feedback regarding our housekeeping team letting doors slam and they will do a much better job of this in the future. Again, your stay with us was not what we had wanted for your either and for that we are sorry. Sincerely, Melissa Georges Director of Sales and Marketing

An elegant colonial period hotel with 4 poster beds and English gardens and superb restaurant. We were fortunate to have patio seating during beautiful weather and when indoor dining was allowed, it was a 5-star experience. We sampled most of what they served during breakfast and several entrees for dinner.  All were excellent and very affordable.  The wait staff were some of the best we have experienced in my nearly ten years as a Hilton Diamond member .  They made us not only feel like honored guests but part of the family. The Inn and the restaurant was an oasis during COVID.

Our stay started under Phase 1 COVID constraints and ended after Phase 2 COVID constraints were in place.  That meant that the Inn and the Restaurant went from little to a lot more happening.  The restaurant went from attending to less than 10 to 90 at one time.  We watched this transition and it was done with poise and excellence that causes us to remain loyal to the Hilton Brand.

The Inn and Restaurant had adequate signage to alert guests to behaviors important for public health.  We understood the limitations imposed and appreciated the extras that they were doing to protect us.  Although we knew of the housekeeping restrictions, the staff surprised us with clean towels and soaps part way through our stay...we were about to ask when they magically appeared at our door.  Likewise in the Restaurant we observed the attention to details, items wiped down that would not normally be part of the routine but important for our health.  The staff were obviously well trained.

We booked a 2 night stay for our babymoon to get away for the weekend because the price seemed decent and their spa offers prenatal massages. We ate at the hotel restaurant our first night booking the table through an app and the food was horrible. I got the roasted half chicken and the skin was so over cooked and crispy in an old oil there was no meat to eat. The sauce that was with the chicken tasted old and gross and the potatoes were old. We got hush puppies as an appetizer and the middle was UNDERCOOKED! There was literally runny batter inside the puppies. Husband got the chicken salad sandwich that came on a croissant and he took one bite to discard the rest. The only tasty thing we got from that restaurant was the creme brûlée cheesecake to share. AVOID the hotel restaurant if you don’t want to ruin your stay completely. Our room was very dirty and extremely small. We had a crack in the TV so it was annoying trying to watch anything. The bed itself was very high and the mattress padding would not stay on. We then discovered that the only chair in the room hasn’t been moved or cleaned behind so there was an old dirty T-shirt that someone threw just laying behind the chair and it wasn’t ours. Clearly room service/staff doesn’t move the furniture to clean the floors! The bottom of bathroom door and the shower door were stained with soap or spill stains and so was the carpet. Nothing about this hotel was great. Customer service was nice and friendly. We won’t be booking there again that’s for sure. One time was enough.

We have used this hotel several times before but this time I was truly disappointed. We came for Regent University new student orientation. I made reservations 3 months prior to our visit and was quoted a rate that was almost $60 LESS than what I was actually charged. I was not given the rate that I was quoted .... Our room had mold in the ceiling (looked like a leak had happened), the floor had not been vacuumed well (crumbs everywhere), the sitting area in the lower level, James River building, the floor was horrible. It truly looked like someone had a party and no one cleaned up. The hotel was NOT prepared for the influx of people and the receptionist was complaining about being "over booked." It was a mess this time around.

I am very sad about this visit. My son will be a student at Regent and I had planned to use this location for my visits every 3 months. For the price that I paid, I would expect a clean room .... I will think twice about my stays. This location is convenient to the campus - walking distance - and the area is absolutely beautiful but sadly $150/night for a dirty place is not okay. It really could use some MAJOR updates as well.

The fireflies in the garden are amazing and the ducks were so fun to watch.

I GREATLY appreciate the shuttle that picked us up from the airport very late after major delays and I appreciate them taking us back to the airport to return home.

The Staff was friendly. We checked in, no issues, welcomed as a Hilton Diamond Member; that is the end of the good. The room we had had not been cleaned in a while. The bathroom had dirt everywhere, debris on the floor and worst of all lots of disgusting pubic hair all over it. The beds were made but it looked like a teenager made them. Dust all over the counters and desk. This was a 60,000 point "deluxe" room. They offered to move us and we moved to another building, it was a smaller room, it was cleaner but old, musty and just not "clean" feeling. Some rooms had the Hilton Clean Stay seals, but neither of the ones we had used them. Internet was unusable; simply horrible. The carpet was old, it felt dirty. This is NOT a luxury hotel, it is an old, dated and worn hotel that has no business being a Hilton Tapestry Collection. It is an ancient mausoleum that needed a full renovation 20 years ago. They did send us champagne and strawberries to compensate us which was very nice. When I did complain initially about the room they offered to clean it so we said okay, 20 minutes after no one coming we asked for another room. We were downgraded to a smaller, "not deluxe" room and I had to go back again and ask if they could adjust the points since I paid for a deluxe and had something fall less than that. They did adjust the point but I still paid about 40,000 points for what I'd call a poorly cleaned, old, mostly, smelly motel room. They said that "all" rooms were cleaned but they ran out of Clean Stay Seals - maybe true about the seals but I can guarantee the rooms were not cleaned and during COVID - shame on them. Overall, the absolute worst Hilton experience ever. Shame on them.....

GGWD, We are sorry that the room you were initially given was not up to our clean standards. We are waiting to receive more seals from Hilton so we can ensure all rooms are inspected by our Housekeeping Manager before the room is sealed. We are glad the front desk did everything within their power to try to make up for this mistake, but it should not have happened. We appreciate your feedback. This was our first New Years Party at Founders and it may be our new tradition! There was no worry about tips as it was included, we got PLENTY of drink tickets (30) and only used half of them. The food was delicious, bathrooms were clean ALL night, and the band (Downtown Collective) was incredible as they took requests. The hotel staff was incredibly polite. We booked with another couple and Dorothy was AMAZING! She handled getting us seated together at dinner and brunch. When we checked in, they offered to hold our bags at the front since we wanted to meet with our friends and it was at the opposite end of the building.

Founders Inn and I have a beautiful history. My grandparents spent every anniversary here, my mother had her bridesmaids weekend here, my 16 and 21 birthdays were spent with friends here. There was something always special and glitzy when we went to the founders inn for a weekend. Upon my last stay a month ago I was wondering where did all the beauty and the glam go? I know this hotel has begun to age in the last ten years as I have but upon my last visit I saw carpets horribly stained and matted with dirt. This wasn’t in just our room it was from the lobby, to the hallways, to the guest room, to the presidential suite. When Hilton purchased this property they made a big deal about upgrading it but I can’t see any upgrades besides maybe new mattresses. I was so worried it look different now I realize it would have helped if they updated some of the very old worn furniture in the rooms. The pool area looks somehow more bare than before. The spa and restaurants once a place that offered you the most delicious and easonal delights in beverages, meals, and spa treatments now hollow shells with not the customer service that was once there. I mean what is this hotel without their field greens salad?? Lastly, the front staff was completely rude, a place I was once a regular at now treated me like a stranger and lost my business for good.

426launad, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Yes, we became a hotel managed by Hilton, but not owned by Hilton, a little over a year ago. During that time, many upgrades have been made. I am sure you noticed our new restaurant furniture. new furniture in the guestroom building lobbies, and the beautiful addition of our Commonwealth Room. Our function space and meeting rooms also received new paint and carpet over the past year. We were in full renovation mode until March 2020. I am sure you are aware that a pandemic hit and we had to put all of our renovations on hold. We already have two model show rooms ready and were getting ready to renovate all of the other rooms right as Covid caused everything to pause. It hit the hospitality industry hard. We opted to put the renovations on hold and focus on keeping our employees employed. Our Spa and Restaurant are forced to have limited offerings under the Executive Order put in place by our Governor. It was not our intention to offer limited services, but it in necessary to keep our guests and employees safe. Safety is our number one priority. It is also our hope to get back to where we left off with the renovations once our business levels allow. I truly hope you do not write us off for good because some really exciting changes are going to be taking place! Sincerely, Melissa Georges Director of Sales and Marketing

We attended an event and stayed for a week. First I must say the venue is great for dogs. Second, the food is good, but you are paying extra for that and the servers are very pleasant. But as for the cleanliness, no. The room we had was clean to begin with and there were notices advising that rooms would only be cleaned on request - which were, with one days exception ignored. There was supposed to be another sign regarding weekends which was never seen. Yes we understand about covid, yes we understand that the hotel is obviously short staffed, but quite frankly that is not our problem. I clean my bathroom every day at home, I change my linens very frequently - I don't expect to have to run around asking for towels, bathmats ( leaking shower door) , toilet paper etc. I also don't expect to buy my own cleaners or be given Lysol wipes by the hotel. Sorry this was disgraceful, my husbands asthma was affected by the dust and lack of cleanliness. Yes we live in challenging times, but we stayed in another 5 hotels, including another Hilton who changed the towels every day on request. If you as a business are saving so much money on staffing, then the prices should be even more discounted. If you have new guests every day - you are cleaning!

Chris P, We are sorry that we were not able to clean your room as often as you would have liked. If you were here with the dog show, we have signage clearly posted regarding when we were going to clean the rooms and that our staff was not going to enter the rooms with dogs in them. That is for our staff's safety and for your pets. Our staff was busy all week delivering fresh supplies to all of our guests. I am not sure if your room was overlooked, but we did try to accommodate everyone's requests. Sincerely, Melissa Georges

My wife and I drove down from the northeast to visit our grandchildren for the Presidents’ Day extended weekend. My son was married at this hotel and we stayed at this property for that event. Ok so I will start with all of the good things first. This property is a Hilton property and it is very large. Lots of parking and surprisingly quiet right on Indian River Road which is a very busy roadway. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The staff at the front desk were very helpful and accommodating. We didn’t get a call in until 1am and check in was very easy and painless. We stayed in the building to the left of the main entrance (I forget the name of it) but it is detached from the main building. We stayed up n this same building for my son’s wedding. I can’t comment on the food at this property because we ate all of our meals offsite. There are plenty of places nearby to shop or get supplies, approximately 1/2 mile away and a Waffle House right across the street. Now the slightly negative things that we noticed. I’m not a negative person or have ridiculously high expectations but little details are important especially when traveling. When we got to the room, there was no guide for the TV channels but the next day I went to the desk and was given one by the staff. The hairdryer which was in the closet and not mounted on the bathroom wall, did not work. The front not door to the building was secured with a key card entry but when I went out of the back entrance to the building, the key card device wasn’t working so someone put a screw in the door latch so it couldn’t lock and anyone could have just entered the building. There is a microwave in the vending machine area but not a n the room( really not a negative just letting everyone know where it is). The usual single coffee pot was n the room but we brought our Kurig and made our own coffee that we knew we would enjoy. The pillows were a bit lumpy and uncomfortable for me and my wife but not terrible. Overall this hotel is very good for the price. I would highly recommend staying here and will stay here again in the future.

davekaren2743, Thank you very much for this feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We had to remove all of our channel guides from the room during Covid, less touch points, and have not been instructed to put them back in the rooms. We are glad that the front desk was able to provide one for you. We apologize about the hairdryer not working either. We will make sure to have our housekeeping check each one while they are servicing the rooms. Thank you for spending President's Day weekend with us. Sincerely, Melissa Georges
