Hotel's Favourite
After scouring TripAdvisor for a reasonably priced hotel for our annual Virginia Beach vacation, we decided on the Holiday Inn at 21st Street. This is a nice hotel, and based on other comments I've seen on this site, it has been renovated. We arrived on June 15th around 2:30. Check-in at this hotel is 4:00, but I thought perhaps if our room was ready early, they would let us in. We literally did have to wait till almost 4:00 before we could get into our room. We chose a king-size room. We were on the 7th floor. Room 712 , to be exact , which is at the very end of the hallway across from the linen closet and the stairwell. Though it was a long walk anytime you got off the elevator, I didn't mind being on the end of the hallway. We had a lovely view of the boardwalk & ocean from our balcony. There's a restaurant on site here called Hemingways. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have happy hour from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. everyday. I mistakenly thought that breakfast would be included when I made our reservations, however, it's important to note that you have to discuss whether or not you want breakfast included when you make your reservation, otherwise if you decide to have breakfast in the restaurant, you will have to pay separately for your food. My husband and I had breakfast at Hemingway's twice during our stay. They have a nice buffet with something for everyone. Every employee we encountered during our stay here was nice and friendly. The young lady working the front desk when we checked in was wonderful. I'm sorry, I don't recall her name. They have an indoor pool that was kept up every day and a workout room. Every day, there's water with fresh fruit sliced up for you to enjoy anytime you visit the lobby. There are also washers and dryers here for guests to do laundry. We brought our own laundry detergent and dryer sheets. However, these things are available to purchase at the front desk if you need to. The biggest thing I would complain about at this hotel is the parking. The parking lot is located directly in front of the hotel, and once those spots are filled, there is parking available across the street behind the shop (Yellow building) . They do have valet parking here, so that is helpful. The valet people were super nice and friendly as well. This hotel is located basically smack dab in the middle of all the action, so to speak. If you prefer to be in a quieter, less crowded area, then this place would not be a good choice for you. Anytime I had a question or concern, and called the front desk or went to speak to them face to face, my concerns were addressed immediately. Also, note that they have daily housekeeping here. The housekeeping staff is prompt and does a good job at keeping your room neat and tidy. I have to say that the staff here works hard at keeping the lobby, elevators, and individual floors clean . One thing I noticed is on our balcony, there were two chairs but no table. I called downstairs to ask about a table, and a maintenance member promptly brought one up to our room. Also, note that the coffee maker in each room is a Keurig, and they supply coffee for your room. If you need more, all you have to do is go downstairs and ask. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and we would stay here again. I've attached a few pictures of our room.

You can expect a great view of the ocean from all rooms but it gets better the higher you go.
Our room was clean with a couple of exceptions. The sliding glass doors leading to the balcony were covered with hand prints and needed a good cleaning. We wiped down everything with Clorox wipes and found the A/C unit to be extremely dirty. We pulled the filters and I bet they hadn’t been cleaned in months. So they got a much needed cleaning in the shower.
Common areas were clean. The hotel team kept the restaurant surfaces sanitized. The breakfast had a good selection and was served buffet style.
The restaurant guests would benefit if addition sanitizing stations were available and signage instructing everyone to sanitize their hands prior to handling the items on the buffet.
Also, the view of the ocean from the restaurant would have been great if the windows were clean. It appeared that the windows were wiped down with extremely dirty rags. Maintenance staff should try a glass cleaner and squeegee.

Stayed here during the pandemic. They were not cleaning rooms during stays to reduce contact but had a good system for exchanging towels and getting more toilerties etc. Room was clean enough when we checked in. I do wish we could have gotten a vaccum at least once. The breakfast is not included and was good but not great. The location is great and they have their own foot wash by the door to the beach. The balcony could use a little love

Though we are still in the middle of a pandemic, the hotel is doing a great job of keeping their guests safe. All the staff are wearing masks, and plexiglass dividers have been installed at the reception desk. There are hand sanitizer stations all around. Our room was very clean, and the decor was colorful and a little cool retro. All rooms have balconies looking out at the ocean. Because of the pandemic, housekeeping will not come in to straighten your room, which was fine with us. There is a plastic bucket in the room that you can fill with dirty towels and linen....you place the bucket outside your door in the morning, and the contents will be replaced with clean items. The desk is generous in giving you more Keurig coffee pods and creamers. I love to swim laps, and the indoor pool was a decent size. We were surprised that the hotel was fully booked for the weekend, so we chose to walk up and down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. The hotel is centrally located, and lots of the shops and restaurants are open with limited seating. During this time of stress, great to relax, spend time with my husband, and walk the beach.

All I want when coming to the beach is an upper floor room facing the ocean so I can open the door and hear the waves. We made our reservations a couple weeks in advance and it only gave me one option of the room. A few days before I was offered upgrades that cost $20 per night so I decided to take my chances. When we arrived our room was ready early which was a plus, but it was on the first floor. When I asked if we could switch he said they were booked. If you want a good room upstairs, call ahead of time and reserve your place. I didn’t figure that we would be one of the 8 rooms on the first floor out off 250+ rooms available. Pretty disappointed. The room itself is dated and kind of gross. Mold in the shower, patches on the ceiling, dirty bed comforter, and to top it off, our glass door would barely open. It’s in a great location with lots of things in walking distance. But I definitely won’t be coming back. My advice would be to spend the extra money and stay somewhere nicer.

Hi Ashley, Thanks for staying with us. We apologize for any confusion with the room type and upgrades and are so happy that you were able to get into your guest room early so you could enjoy the beach ! It looks as if you selected to opt into the upgrade upon availability, unfortunately were were sold out over the weekend and could only honor the exact room type you secured for your reservation. The room type reserved is only located only on the first floor of the hotel. We honor our IHG Clean Promise and hope our staff was contacted to immediately resolve any guest room issues you experienced. Your experience in the guest room is not typical of a stay at our property, and we will research your concerns to make sure they are resolved for future visits. We appreciate letting us know how we can improve for future visits and hope to have you back as our guest in the future.

The AC unit was a nightmare. The wall thermostat didn't work, so we had to use the controls on the AC unit (despite the sign that said to use the wall mounted thermostat). It would only run on high and the thermostat was not accurate. It would constantly cycle on an off and for some reason, it was positioned so you have the AC blowing in your face when you are sleeping. I can't even count the number of times I woke up because of the noise and cold air blasting in my face. I'd say it's the worst AC unit I've ever had in all the hotels I've stayed in. It was also rusted.
The hotel is showing it's age. The elevators and windows didn't looked like they were wiped or cleaned. There was rust on all the light fixtures. There were questionable repairs done that looked like they were done by an amateur or a DIYer. Furniture laminate was peeling off. We saw housekeeping cleaning rooms with her mask pulled down over her chin. People who worked there ignored the sign that said elevators are for 1 family or 4 people max. The hallway's AC was broken, so it was extremely hot walking through it. There were empty hand sanitizer stations for multiple days. Water was dripping on our balcony from the floor above us.
The only good thing is the location and the room was clean even though it looked worn out. So, I won't be booking this hotel again, and I do not recommend it.

I really appreciate all the hotels we have been stayed doing their best to host quests at this difficult time. However, one staff could destroy her team’s effect to rude your vacation mood. We knew we will be later than 10pm to check in and was not able to digital check-in. I called hotel in the afternoon to report our situation and was told we are assigned to room 1205 as request in my reservation for sure. She confirmed we were all set and looked forward to meet us later. While we arrived, the front desk lady told us, there was only one room available and nothing could be confirmed before we checked in. She did not even let me finish my story of the earlier phone conversation. Being IHG Elite members for over decades, I totally understand how challenged to arrange the rooms. However, if our room has been assigned in the same day afternoon and confirmed, they should honor their promise. All she needs to do just to apologize for our inconvenient but not the attitude of take it or not take it. We came there to celebrate my husband’s birthday which I have noted it in my reservation. Based on our experiences with IHG, we will be greeting with oral or card at room to show IHG’s caring. Unfortunately, not at this IHG hotel!
Although we saw dust on the desk, lamps, we know the housekeeper works much harder now a day at pandemic. As I always wiped everything whenever I stepped into the hotel room, to be honest, it did not bother me. What I concerned was the hand bar next to shower head was broken. It could be harmful if someone actually leaned on it to step out of the bath tub. Another problem is the phone message light was blinking but you could not push the bottom to listen or turn it off (broken). It was annoying at night that we had to unplug the cable.
Besides above minor issues, this hotel certainly is one for the best options at Virginial Beach for its location. The best part of our room was the super heavy door to balcony. It was miraculous to shut off the sound from the beach. So you enjoy the Oceanview, but not crowd noise. While the balcony provides you the sunrise view, the room entry gives you the sunset view. No matter the restaurant on site or across the street, you will find tons of eatery to enjoy.

With summer standard rates for late August weekend in excess of $400 per night, you would expect a clean room. Not this place...
What can I say good...early check in allowed and the decor is updated.
That is where it ends.
The room had a pungent musty/smoky smell. Hair found in the and shower walls. Dirt/sand on the floor. Sticky residue on the TV remote. Restaurant only had one cook if you didn't want the breakfast buffet, therefore it was a 20 - 30 minute wait despite many empty tables.
Holiday Inn, you can do better.

The view is the best part of the hotel. Every room looks out over the ocean. If you leave the sliding door cracked open a bit you can sleep to the sounds of the waves rolling up in the beach. The location is nice with restaurants and shops in close walking distance. The valet - which is necessary with the limited parking - was greatly under staffed but the attendants were very friendly. We asked if we could have a late check out but were advised that is a option reserved only for high rated rewards members. (The room was available.) All in all it was an okay basic hotel but I would probably choose a different hotel if I visit the area again.

Hi Morishe, I am glad you left feedback. Thanks for staying at our Holiday Inn Va Beach-Oceanside (21st St)! We always wanted our guests to have a delightful stay, no matter what the purpose of the travel is. Though I appreciate your compliments on our room views and location, I'm sorry to hear that your stay was marred by your dissatisfaction with the limited valet staff and the turndown of your late check-out request. I went ahead and shared your thoughts with the team so that necessary actions can be taken to promote improvement. We hope to host you again in the future so that we can give you a much better experience. Cheers, June A. Case Manager IHGService

Horrible experience.. book the hotel in August of 2021 through hotels.com price was $616 for three nights which I chose the pay at the property option.. fast forward to June 22 and hotels.com tells me I still have a reservation.. show up at the hotel and they informed me that they tried to pre-authorize my card in September of 2021 which had been compromised and was denied they claim they tried to get a hold of me but I had no email no voicemail no nothing so I had no room because they had rebooked the room of mine.. I was angry and told them they needed to make this right so the manager called down the road to another oceanfront Holiday inn and they said yeah we have another room we're going to charge you $389 a night which was a significant amount more and I thought that they should honor myhotels.com fee.. they said no you have to take that up with hotels.com and I told them you had no right to charge my card because I had not chosen the pay immediately option from hotels.com well the manager got rude with me and said well there's nothing I can do you have to take it up with hotels.com.. so I called hotels.com and they called the property and told me that yeah they were allowed to do that and I told the hotel.com woman but one of them needed to make this right because both of them were pointing fingers at each other.. needless to say I had no place to stay.. and I will never ever ever in my life stay at another Holiday inn and especially not this one on the waterfront of Virginia Beach very very angry.. and I hope this hotel goes bankrupt.. shame on you this was a birthday present for my son that we would have an oceanfront hotel and we ended up having nowhere to stay and Holiday inn should have made this right they should have found a way to help us.. and they were selfish and just didn't care and shame on them! I would not let a dog stay there!

Hi Juslin, We are sorry to hear of your experience with your reservation made through a third party company, not the hotel directly. Using a third party booking agency significantly limits the ability and communication of the hotel to the guest, as all correspondence goes through you and the company you used to make the reservation. Our hotel requires a deposit made at the time of reservations on most weekends, and from Memorial Day - Labor Day, as outlined in the reservation process. Unfortunately if we are unable to collect the deposit, we do notify the booking company and cancel the reservation. As you noted, the hotel did follow policy as outlined and are always willing to assist guests by offering to help you to contact hotels.com or to reach out to another hotel, as we were sold out and did not have a room to check you into. We regret that our best efforts weren't enough to assist you, and we wish you safe travels. Best Regards,
