We booked to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary, it was the first time away from our children for nearly six years, but sadly the night will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Our visit began pleasant enough, my wife and I checked into the hotel on Saturday afternoon, and after a leisurely stroll around the gardens and adjoining winery, we retreated to our room to prepare for our dinner reservation in Elenore’s Restaurant. My wife went to shower, dried herself and put on a robe before attempting to dry her hair using the hotel provided hair dryer. Upon turning the hair dryer on, it exploded and caught fire, in a split second she used a towel to extinguish the fire but was left with flash burns to her arm and a serious burn to her wrist. On hearing the commotion, I rushed towards the bathroom to find my wife holding her arm and in shock. On realising the seriousness of the burn we immediately began to cool the burn under cool running water. After a number of minutes I moved her back into the main room at which time she burst out crying and was experiencing significant pain due to the burn, I went to seek help from the hotel staff at reception. I informed the reception staff member on duty that my wife had received a serious electrical burn from the hairdryer in the room and asked for assistance. The lady behind the counter led me to the freezer in the breakfast restaurant and provided one Anko (K-mart) branded small ice gel pack and an additional ice block. Despite the breakfast restaurant being a short distance from our room, the reception staff member made no effort to attend our room, nor did she offer to call for medical assistance. Shortly after obtaining the ice packs, I returned to reception to obtain a bandage to dress the wound. The same lady opened the first aid kit and said “take whatever you need”. Again, and despite me showing a photograph of the injury to the reception staff member, no offer was made to call an ambulance or doctor. I returned to our room with the bandages to attend to my wife’s injuries. After dressing the wound we attended dinner, in hindsight I am not quite sure how we actually got to dinner, my wife was certainly in shock, I think I was too. On returning to our room at approximately 10pm, the smell of burning skin and electrics was still very evident, however the room was freezing cold. I again attended reception and advised that the air conditioning was not working, the same lady at reception advised that the electric shock would have triggered the safety switch and that she needed to go and turn it back on. Shortly after, the reception staff member knocked on the door of our room to enquire if the heating was working - I cannot believe that the hotel would turn the electricity back on without even checking the area first to ensure that it was safe! During the course of the night, my wife woke many times and took pain killer medication, of which we were fortunate to have in our possession. Needless to say, our special, much anticipated, night away was ruined, I am amazed that reception staff failed to attend our room or offer medical assistance. Rather than having a leisurely afternoon in the Yarra Valley the following day, we instead left the hotel and sort medical treatment immediately after checkout. It's now more than two weeks since our horror visit to this hotel and my wife still describes her injury as "agony". We have told many family & friends about our experience, of which one commented that the burn to my wife's wrist was not a contact burn, but an exit point due of the electrocution - the comment went further, saying that if my wife had have been touching her other arm at the time, she could have been killed because the electric current would not have had an exit point! Despite two emails to the hotel following our horror stay, we are yet to receive a response from the hotel.…
