Don't judge this lovely book by its slightly dated cover. Hotel rooms are spacious, clean, extremely comfortable and well appointed (capsule coffee machine anyone?). As for location American River is off the well beaten K.I. tourist path but this is an instance of the path less travelled being worthwhile. The staff are friendly and efficient. The welcome is genuinely warm....

We stayed at the Mercure for 4 nights in February and loved its position overlooking the water through trees which were alive with birds morning and night. Very peaceful and relaxing setting with comfortable rooms. The restaurant has an excellent menu which did not disappoint. With very few places to dine at American River, we were lucky to be able...

We spent two days at the Mercure. The staff were just lovely and the restaurant food was excellent and the service couldn't be faulted. The property isn't fancy but I don't think anything on Kangaroo Island is really, unless you pay $1,500 a night! It is very clean and comfortable and has everything you need. It needs to be noted...

We loved our overnight stay here during our Kangaroo Island 2 day tour. Our room was at the front & was lovely. We ate dinner at the hotel & it was one of the best meals we had during our 3 months in Australia, delicious! The staff were helpful on reception & we would love to stay again!

American River is a very remote spot on this remote island: Just some tourists around during the evenings and nights. We came back to the Kangaroo Island Lodge after more than 10 years. Not much has changed, but the food has improved. The service is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and of a reasonable size. The breakfast is...

This is an old motel and looks it and not what you might expect from a Mercure. There is nothing else in American River and nothing much to see in American River but it is twenty minutes from the ferry and convenient point to stay. Despite the old feeling of the place and a tired look outside the room was...

Hi Oldjack, I am sorry your expectations weren't met on your trip. Our location is in a small town, giving our guests a relaxing environment. On site we do have nature trail walks, a quality restaurant, swimming pool, sauna and WiFi. In your review you didn't mention any of these, so I am wondering if you took advantage of this?...

Hotel in great location opposite American River. Rooms were clean and tidy but hotel felt a little tired in parts for the money we had paid, particularly around the pool area. On our arrival day we sat by the pool which could do with some tlc. Several groups of locals pulled up in vehicles over the afternoon with swimming gear...

Thank you for your feedback on your stay. Yes we do have a lovely location. Being a small village community we do allow locals to utilise the pool, under the understanding that they must be well behaved. If there was something you were not happy with from their behaviour, our friendly staff could have corrected this. If there is ever...

We found this the perfect location for exploring Kangaroo Island. It is a 30 minute drive from the ferry, and allows easy access to any direction you want to explore. It also has full mobile coverage, and is near enough to amenities (like fuel, restaurants, supermarkets, and post offices) to make the stay even more comfortable. The area is very...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
