For the first vacation review ever, I have absolutely nothing negative to say about me and my husbands stay at Melia Cayo Coco.
We had booked a Classic Room and upon our arrival, our room was not quite what I expected and asked if we could change rooms.
We were offered an upgrade to a Lagoon Suite for $200 US for the week and we gladly took them up on the offer!! From the VIP upgrades that were included to the view from room, I was sold!!!
ALL staff were friendly, helpful, professional and seemed to really enjoy their jobs. Even the guests were the friendliest we have ever met. The grounds were beautifully manicured and clean; 🌴the chairs and loungers around the pool and on the beach were always plentiful; 🏖the selection of food and drinks available throughout the day was fresh, beautifully presented and full of wonderful tastes. 🍹🍺There was not one meal I wasn't wishing I had a bigger appetite to enjoy more!!😂
The buffet had something for everyone's taste and the al a cart restaurants spoiled you rotten!!😊
What more can I say?? Melia Cayo Coco, you outdid yourselves and we will have memories to last a lifetime from our fabulous vacation there! 👍

Just returned from my third visit to this quiet & relaxing, adults-only all-inclusive resort and once again had a fabulous holiday! Everything about this resort is superb – the rooms, restaurants and food, the resort grounds and beach, the wonderful staff and great evening entertainment!

I stayed in one of the grand lagoon rooms which provides a large terrace with sunrise and sunset views across the lagoon! The room is spacious and nicely furnished with some recent upgrades (new fridge and kettle in my room). The room is always stocked with water, canned soft drinks and beer, and the chambermaid did a wonderful job of keeping the room clean and tidy each day (Thank you, Taidee!)

One of the nice features of staying in a grand lagoon room is having breakfast served each morning at Las Caletas Restaurante which overlooks the lagoon: the view is wonderful and staff are truly superb – a perfect start to each day of vacation! The a la carte restaurants are excellent (especially Las Caletas and La Terrazza Mediterranean Restaurants) with very nice menu choices. I visited for a week this time and was entitled to three a la carte dinners, and was invited to an additional dinner at Las Caletas as a returning guest to the resort – a nice touch, much appreciated! Beyond these restaurants, the Del Sol Buffet Restaurant is also excellent offering a wide variety of foods (including fresh grilled, stir frys, regional specialties) with wonderful attentive staff, even at the busiest times! Great dining experiences!

Evening entertainment was as good as expected this year with a very gifted dance troupe, along with regulars such as The Tenores with their spectacular vocal arrangements! Before the late show, there was a pianist at the lobby bar several evenings who would play for an hour – very nice! The Aqua Ballet show at the pool is a special treat! There were new aspects (music, dancing arrangements) to the entertainment this year so it seemed fresh and innovative, not merely repetitive of shows I had seen the previous two years.

The beach at the resort is wonderful and despite the fact that the weather was quite windy (beach red-flagged each day), it was still walkable and thoroughly enjoyable. The beach extends beyond a number of resorts and I would take an hour and a half walk each morning and again in the afternoon – it feels so wonderful to walk barefoot on the beaches of Cayo Coco, such a wonderful escape from the brutal winter back in Canada!

All in all, a wonderful vacation, a respite from cold Canadian winter, and I look forward to returning to Melia Cayo Coco! I highly recommend this resort!

Hello Fellow Family Vacationers

We just booked this hotel on Thursday and we are currently looking for information, travel advice and the nice "To Knows" for this resort. It's been a few years since we've been to Cuba and I see the deportation tax has been built in to our rate. Now, I do have some questions:

1. Trip advisor to says to brink Canadian money. How much do you think we we will need. I guess we will look for some type of excursions as we will be there for 2 weeks. Money will be for that and tips for service (bar/restaurants & maids). Thoughts?

2. Money exchange? Airport/Hotel or is there a bank near by?

3. Upgrades? If we want to upgrade, how much will that cost and which is the best way to go about this? Hotel or from travel site?

4. Give aways? With twins, we certainly have clothes that we'd rather give away to a family opposed to Value Village who turn a profit on people with needs. Thoughts?

5. Excursions? Any recommendations?

6. With a room, close to the beach or pool?

7. Water, we will want to drink plenty of bottle of water. I see the site says each room gets one liter of water a day. We plan on drinking about 8 liters of bottled water a day. Ideas?

I take it, this passage is long enough. Anything to help or point us in the right direction, is appreciated. We will play forward this kindness upon our return to our Fellow Family Travelers.

With Respect,

Nelson

Dear Dadd-EE-O, Thank you so much for contacting us through this important site. We just noticed by reading your review that would be traveling with kids which makes us think you made a mistake and posted your review to the incorrect hotel since our hotel, Meliá Cayo Coco, is for Adults Only, for guests over the age of 18 years old. Perhaps the hotel you booked is Meliá Jardines del Rey or Meliá Cayo Guillermo, where children are allowed. With warmest regards, Juan Pereira General Manager

This was our 6th time in Cuba and I guess I can only say is my expectations going in were low but the whole objective of getting away for Christmas were met. If you have only experienced 5 star resorts in Cuba you will likely be very happy with this resort. we have stayed in 5 star adult only resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Saint Lucia and while Cuba may be a cheaper alternative it just can’t compete in the food category.
The nightly entertainment in the main lobby was excellent and The activity team was really good. Our room was very dated with no dresser to put our clothes but our maid Brenda did an excellent job at keeping our room clean. There was no hot water many days.
The beach (which is what we came for) did not disappoint. We walked it everyday and you could walk in with no seaweed getting caught in your feet.
We did not enjoy the food but our expectations were low anyways. The New Years Eve dinner in the a la cart restaurant was the worst we had. The best we had was the Cuban meal at the a la cart. The pasta at the buffet was good. We got the chef to add some white wine into the sauce. The pizza was good only if you were able get it right from the oven. If you are looking for ketchup or mustard bring your own because they don’t have it.
The best liquor selection can be found in the main lobby but expect to pay for top shelf. There was Canadian Whiskey (crown Royal) but it will cost you $2.50 Cuc. Top shelf liquor should be included at a 5 star resort. Even simple things like sprit, Coca Cola, red bull was going to cost extra.
Internet which I expected to be include cost extra unless you were a guest staying in the lagoon area. there was a lot of nickel and dimming at this resort. Something we hadn’t experienced in other Cuban resorts we’ve stayed at.
If someone asked me if I had a great time I would say I did. I wouldn’t stay here again and would not recommend this property to friends.

Dear briant620, In first place I would like to thank you for posting your review on this site. Our guest’s opinions and suggestions are of the upmost importance for us to improve our ongoing services. Receive my most sincere apologies for not meeting your expectations in your visit to our hotel. This is not nearly the experience we provide to our visitors. We are a group very committed to provide all guests with the best of our efforts. We would like to thank you for mentioning those aspects that were to your liking such as beach and entertainment which are very important booking aspects future guests take into consideration when planning their vacation. Some of maintenance faults you have encountered and lately described on your review denote lack of supervision and right doing so, all we have to say is how sorry we are for failing on our commitment and let you know that we will be taking all the steps to make sure all these mistakes are corrected and other customers not be affected. It is true that our standard section is in need of renovation, so far we have renovated 21 of them and are planning on continuing this task as long as we count with all the required supplements. Unfortunately at this moment we have no other choice than offering the wi-fi at an extra charge since this is a service that is still very limited in our country, anyways we appreciate your observation and assure you that we are always doing our best to offer a better service as our guests deserve and we truly hope to be able to provide free WiFi in the near future. We are very worried about your comments on food, specially on the New Year Eves dinner since we received excellent feedback from most of our guests who stayed on this special date; this is a very complemented aspect in the resort and we want to keep it that way; therefore all your comments and suggestions will be passed on to our Food and Beverage manager. We regret that you do not want to return to our hotel but we remain with the hopes that you change your mind and give us the opportunity to provide you with the holiday vacation that so many of our guests have experienced and continue to enjoy at Meliá Cayo Coco, therefore if you have any special request do not hesitate in letting us know, we will be very happy to assist you. With warmest regards, Juan Pereira General Manager

Great stuff:

1. Most hard working staff ever: all the staff have worked so hard. We got the best services from bell boys, restaurant servers, reception staff, Kitchen staff and the manager (Juan ). We feel extremely thankful for their services.

Please tip them well if you can. The Covid situation has great impact on their income.

2. Location: 15 mins away from the airport. Beautiful long beaches. There are workers who take care of the seaweed on the beach everyday to ensure that we have a clean beach.

3. Hobbie cat ( small catamarans) is free if you want to spend 30 minute out. For 1 hour snorkeling on the near by reef, 20 USD per person, I recommend this. The 2 gentlemen working at the hobbie cat booths are extremely nice. They kept close eyes on us when we were snorkeling. One of them actually was by my side when They saw that I’m not the best swimmer:)

4. Food: been to Cuba 4 times. I got the best food here compared to other 3 . Super grateful that even in covid time, we still can get good food and great variety. Please be aware that food is a very debatable topic in Cuba.

5. Social Distancing: this is something that out of the hotel control in my opinion. But there are things can be done that would make it better like : putting more signs to gently remind other tourists to respect social distancing.

There is not hate here but definition of “social distancing” seems to be very different for Russian Tourists. I was a little concerned when I was lining up for the food in the restaurant and other tourists just simply cut the line and jumped right in front of me. Again, no hate, I understand that there is culture difference and rude + arrogant people are everywhere.

We arrived on Nov 20th for a week, it was our 6th visit at Melia and once again we were not disappointed. Everyone went out of their way to make our visit amazing. The food was excellent and never went hungry, the grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The buffet may sometimes take longer because of having to be served instead of helping ourselves. The staff were doing their very best to cook and serve as well. The beach had breathtaking views lots of chairs at the beach and pool so no need to save chairs although some still did. The Ranchon Restaurant on the beach had great views and entertainment at lunch. We had a Lagoonview Room that had amazing views of the sunrise and sunset, it was not far from the main lobby. Covid tests were done at the resort for $30.00US paid by Visa or cash. We felt safe there was sanitizer throughout the hotel and masks were mandatory in the buffet and restaurants. The staff wore masks inside and outside the resort. We can not wait to return soon. The service all through the hotel was top-notch.

My husband and I just returned from Melia Cayo Coco. I don't even know where to begin. Our reception was friendly and quick checked in in minutes. Our room 4121 on the lagoon was clean, comfortable, nicely appointed. The view was stunning. The food was especially good, the fresh grilled fish and chicken were staples for me as was my tasty omlette in the mornings. The dining facilities all of them are beautiful, the staff is very warm, friendly and attentive. The pool is beautiful as well. Twice while we were there they had a violinist and pianist serenading all guests with the most beautiful music in the morning. The entertainment in the evenings was excellent and created a great atmosphere for dancing and enjoying the evening with friends. All beverages were delicious, and there is a great selection to choose from. All the gift shops were well stocked and I visited all of them. Oh and peaceful, serene, calm relaxing, Melia Cayo Coco is all of them. The grounds are well kept. Everybody at Melia Cayo Coco works hard to maintain a beautiful and welcoming environment. We will be spending all our winter get aways at Melia Cayo Coco. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful vacation.

We spent a week at the Melia Cayo Coco during our January trip from Havana to Santiago de Cuba and it is back to the way it was before Hurricane Irma struck.

This time we stayed in the suites on the lagoon and were very impressed by the standard of the rooms, although we have always been very satisfied with the 'standard' rooms on previous visits.

A few of the staff have moved on since we were here last and we were sorry that we didn't see Bernard Maier, the previous General Manager, doing his rounds. We were told that he was now managing a hotel in Majorca and winding down to retirement so we wish him well.

The staff at this hotel are great and there are too many to mention them all by name but we were happy to meet up with some of them again. Our thanks go to them all, including Yonel in the lobby bar, Ylayaly in the buffet, Celia and Sonia in the buffet.

Fernando is the best grill cook we have come across in all the Cuban hotels we have stayed in. His meat and fish is freshly cooked and is much better than that in the Melia Santiago de Cuba.

I'd like to make a couple of special mentions, firstly to Yarima in the snack bar for my coffee and eggs in the morning, secondly to Pedro in the Sports Club for shooting and chess lessons and lastly to the Reception team for making this a great stay.

I won't say too much more this time, it's all been said before by many people here on Trip Advisor, but this hotel really is the best in the Cayos right now and, in my experience, is the best Melia in Cuba.

We have been to most Caribbean islands, and always return to Cuba for the people and beaches. This was our first stay in Cayo Coco and Melia was recommended by our travel agent, as she has had many repeat customers and positive reviews for the resort. We arrived December 21 and departed the evening of January 1. We paid a small amount of money to keep our room till 6pm instead of the usual noon check-out, well worth it. We have finally found the resort for us, and plan to return next Christmas, sooner if possible.
The resort was not at full capacity, due to covid, but there seemed to be full staff working. There was never a wait, and plenty of loungers and cabanas, both at the pool and at the beach.
We are convinced that Marco, the manager, either has a clone or he never sleeps. He is everywhere, and always checking in with the guests to see if there is anything of concern.
We stayed in a wheelchair accessible room, in block 87, close to the beach grill and pool area. Husband uses a manual wheelchair (amputee), and the resort was completely accessible except for one restaurant above the pool bar (still made it up the steps using crutches, although the staff would have carried him if needed!!).
Wife is vegetarian, and no problem finding something to eat. Celia and Sady in the buffet are wonderful, and held a convenient wheelchair-friendly table for us each morning, with coffee and water served the second we sat down. The omelette chef knew hubby's order by the 2nd day!
Our room, although basic, was exceptionally clean. The maids and the gardeners are some of the hardest working and friendliest people anywhere. We were always met with a 'hola' and a wave. The entertainment team were great, always happy and willing to converse, and help us with our embarrassingly bad Spanish. (We promise to practice for next visit!)
The beach was very clean, raked everyday, with lots of places for cigarette/cigar disposal, so the beach was not a giant ashtray like you get in some other places.
We were very impressed with the constant cleaning and disinfecting of all areas. The lobby washrooms were constantly attended to, and never any concerns. We felt very safe, even at the Cayo Coco airport and bus transfers.
Tips in Canadian money were welcome, but not expected. Canadian coins are useless, so we made some exchanges for bills for some of the staff throughout the week. We generally tipped $5/meal and $5 every few drinks. We took work gloves, medication and personal care items for gifts, and left a lot of our (clean) clothes behind.
Shout out to Chino/Pedro and the rest of the entertainment staff. They kept hubby busy and out of trouble!

We have been at the resort at the end of Nov beginning of Dec for one week. This was our second visit to this resort, and this visit was better than the first one. There have been plenty of good food throughout the resort – at the buffet and a la carte. The staff as always was very nice and professional, always willing to help and assist you. The room has been impeccably cleaned each day during our stay. If you are looking for a relaxing resort where you just want to wind down and relax, this is the best place. The resort also offers very good alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and their Spanish coffee is so good. The beach is really nice, clean shallow water. It is well maintained by the staff all the time, one can find easily a place with shade at any point in time, with no need to wake up early in the morning. We are looking forward at returning back at this resort in the near future. Overall, this is a great resort with wonderful people, who offer great services at high quality.

Hi Lisa U I’m not really sure on the answer to your question. I think the best option would be to contact the hotel directly although this might prove difficult in getting an answer quickly as the hotel is currently closed for extensive restoration and will not be reopening until late September early October
