MUTHU COLONIAL Hotel /Cayo Coco
Hey fellow and future Cuban Travellers
Just returned from the Colonial hotel in Cayo Coco
I have travelled to many parts and resorts in Cuba over 30 times and most resorts have much in common. Your Cuban vacation is what you make of it.Cuban resorts is not like other tropical resorts as their options are limited and if you want a 5* luxurious experience you may want to choose another destination
The MUTHU Colonial is designed with a rustic Spanish colonial look and combined with great staff and clean surroundings, pools and beaches , this resort was a good choice
The food was good , especially the a la cartes.
The buffet was also good with omelettes , fresh bread , fruits , tropical juices, grilled shrimps , fish, pork , beef , chicken , frozen ice cream etc. The choice for lunch included pasta , pizza ,Home made burgers and grilled seafood . The Cuban day celebrations was great and you willl not starve at this resort
Our room was cleaned daily and restocked with water, beers and pops
The staff was very friendly especially Anatolie from Customer Service . The team listened to any concerns and tried to help as much as possible if any issues came up
Have to give a big shout out to the hotel manager Rudolpho.
Rudolpho greeted us every morning. His young drive , personality and expectations is driving changes to make Cuban resorts a more attractive destination for Canadian travellers
Could go on and on but if you are looking for a quick flight to a quiet sunny tropical destination this resort may be for you
Note: I stayed in building 15 room 1539 second floor for a great ocean view
Buildings 15,16, &17 are great for ocean views but comes with added cost
Also try not to ruin your vacation if something minor is not working
We had water, food, AC, etc during our trip so no complaints
The staff there will help you
For novice anglers - the north end of the beach has some good spots for shore fishing
Negative -lots of Russians drank all day , very rude , messy don’t tip and looked down on Cubans
They were very obnoxious
Note to management :
Please have maids complete a checklist to make sure doors . Shower ,toilet , tv , fridge etc is working before turning room over to next gusts
Thank you to all staff and management from Kiki and Sean

I've been to Cuba 15 times and, without doubt, this is the friendliest, cleanest, and most comfortably relaxing hotel I have had the fortune to stay in . The food was A-1, washrooms spic and span, no problems with water, A/C, or mould . I most definitely will return if the fates allow.
This was my first time to the Colonial and there are so many staff I would like to give a thank you mention to. However, I would likely forget someone in the long list. Suffice it to say I didn't encounter one person that I didn't consider a friend by week's end.
They had not yet completed the reopening of all of the buildings when I was there, having just reopened three weeks before. But work was constant on the remaining blocks and I expect they will all be available soon.
Simply a fantastic week and I will return !

We have booked the Mojito, but they had a defect central air condition and we were moved to the Colonial instead. At first we weren't that happy, because who wants to start vacation with this news and a long wait for the transportation, but once we arrived at the Colonial we were convinced it was a blessing ending up here.
The staff was absolutely amazing. From the gardener to the manager, everyone was so nice and bend over backwards to make your stay as pleseant as possible.
There is currently a food shortage in Cuba and the selection wasn't as big as we were used to, but there was still a good number of choices and everything was delicous.
The room was big, clean and comfy. The resort has a lot of character, which made it so different compare to all the others. The colonial architecure was grand and it gave the illusion that you are staying in a little Cuban village, It was fun exploring the grounds which are well kept. There is tower you can climb up and enjoy the view, a little lake and if you are lucky you see a flamingo taking a sun bath.
The beach was beautiful and only a short distance away fromt our room. You could swim with the pelicans and watch them fishing. A spectacle that won't get boring.
Can't say much about the entertainment, We are early birds and therefore went to bed early. The nighlty entertainment would't start before 10 pm.
Overall we were very happy there and had a great time. My husband was overjoyed about the excellent free WiFi. Somthing we never experienced, but I guess Cuba is finally catching up.
We defintely would return again and again.

Summary: Great beach, good food, wonderful staff, lackluster facilities.
The Muthu Colonial is currently undergoing renovations it seems. This hotel is not new, it used to be the Iberostar Colonial and before that the Blau Colonial. I'm not sure if any rooms are actually renovated currently, I stayed in a very old room which was part of the main building.
The staff did what they can but the facilities are tired, and there are not enough of them. The resort was at 20% capacity and everywhere there was lineups. Seemed like everything from the bars to the buffet had a skeleton crew operating which made practically everything self serve. Expect to never have a waiter come offer to get you a drink, and every bar to have a lineup of 5-10 people at all times.
I booked an ocean view room and was met with a grisly sight. It looked like someone cut themselves on the way out and there were blood trails running from the bed to the safe and again to the exit. It was difficult to convince the staff that this wasn't acceptable and get into another room. Thankfully they had one available (not an ocean view), but that room wasn't much better and didn't have water for 2 days, and no hot water for the remainder of the trip.
The sheets were never fully clean, but I will admit that I may be picky on this. There were always some stains including blood stains on them.
If you can stomach your room, and are patient, then the rest of the resort is great. Like any place in Cuban, shortages are common but if you get to the bars early as they open you can usually get almost everything.
Food was great. The person I went with had dietary restrictions and even that didn't impact us much. We were always able to find something that tasted great. The buffet exceeded the booked restaurants so I'd suggest that you skip them and just go to there.
Beach was fantastic and never busy. Being smaller, it was never an issue to find a good spot and the water was practically empty. Pools were good and the swim-up bar always had an extra few seats for us.

I visited the hotel for 4 days, I was in two rooms due to having problems with the air conditioning, despite the change, the air conditioning was always very poor. In the rooms and other parts of the hotel there are insects: flies, mosquitoes and gegenes, the last two caused constant hives and itching. The air conditioning in bars and restaurants is very poor or bad, at the mercy of the wind or prevailing weather, to feel cool, the ambient temperature is always high at this time. The power plant is in poor condition, the electricity was out for two days, and caused problems throughout the normal
Operation, The food is well prepared but little variety for a 4-star resort, food is not sold, it is preferable to pay for what I want to eat than to be given an offer that I don't like. There was no offer of cocktails, natural juices physically made there, only factory juices and two types of lemon and orange soft drinks. I have no complaints about the kitchen, cleaning, reception, bartender's, maintenance staff, I think they are exceptional and make a great effort to work well every day. The animation is excellent, applause, I think that if they do not modernize the hotel they may lose it over time, the managers must be less formal and more businessmen, have solutions for everything at all times and not promise what cannot be achieved, and create of your hotel something more competitive in the Caribbean and more professional. Don't think that you are the center of tourism or the best of the best because you have enviable beaches.

It has been my worst experience in hotels in Cuba, it seems incredible that a 3-star hotel has better quality than this hotel. I was in block 15 room 38, terrible weather situation, excessive and inhuman heat in a room where supposedly after enjoying the beach and other facilities one should rest. He complained and they were not even able to go to the room, the treatment was terrible, except for very specific exceptions of workers, the rest has been terrible. I recommend not going to this hotel. Everything is very nice, but the treatment and terrible conditions are terrible.

I have visited Cayo Coco many times in the past. This was a first time I had the opportunity to stay at Hotel Colonial.
I choose this hotel based on their amazing beach, attractive Spanish colonial style of architecture and beautiful lush gardens.
My room had gorgeous garden view , very comfortable bed , hot water and great air conditioning.
There were plenty of food options and as vegetarian I greatly appreciated the efforts of the chefs to cater to my needs.
Customer service was exceptional in all areas from reception, chamber maid, bartenders, pool maintenance and the management. I would like to thank ALL the workers and the management for the hospitality and your excellent service.

We've just returned from our visit with our Cuban family at the Muthu Colonial Hotel and we had the most amazing vacation - way beyond our expectations!! The grounds are lush, trimmed and vibrant. The pools are clean, fresh and welcoming. The beach is clean and gorgeous including the new bar hut and the gazebo for romantic dinners. The new Chef makes the most amazing food including the lobster that was served at our romantic dinner, the buffet at the Colonial restaurant, and at the Fontanella. Our room was perfect! It overlooked the gardens and ocean and had great air conditioning, plumbing (hot water included) and was very clean. In addition to all of this, the BEST OF ALL was the staff, whom we all fondly refer to as our friends or family. We would love to mention everyone but the list would be very long. Here, we would like to thank the new Director, Rodolfo, who goes above and beyond for guests and staff alike. His energy and leadership are boundless as he circulates the resort and connects with everyone while working with staff and enjoying dancing with the animation team. Although a strong leader, we also found that Rodolfo is very humble. Truly a blessing for this resort. We would also like to thank Sanny for going above and beyond to make our stay so amazing! Our Hola Sun rep, Angel, was super helpful and thoughtful as well. Finally, we'd really like to make a special mention of the new Customer Relations person, Yonel Rodriguez, who although brand new to the hotel, made a concerted effort to meet everyone and chat to ensure we were all comfortable each day. (sorry we didn't get a picture of Yonel). The areas of the hotel that are open are absolutely lovely and we look forward to all the updates and changes that are coming to the rest of the resort! The Colonial is now a winner! THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Beautiful beach. Wonderful staff. Lush grounds. Pretty darn good food.
The resort is older and is in the process of being updated. It is charming and has a unique character you don't get at other resorts. This is also Cuba, where you can expect one day you may not have the hottest water, or the white wine will be available at tomorrow's dinner, not tonight's. Yet none of this should spoil your vacation.
I do want to call out the bartender at La Placita. He makes the best Spanish coffee I've ever tasted. And Churros. There's a churro hut just off the main lobby. The Cuban lunch was delicious, the grill restaurant by the swim up bar was as well.
The resort was only about 33% full, and there was plenty of everything when other guests were considerate.

Me and my wife decided on a quick 4 day visit to the Colonial . It was our 3rd visit to the resort and we had another great trip. We were surprised to recieve a complimentary bottle of rum with some mix and a lovely welcoming letter upon our arrival. The resort is undergoing some renovations so some amenities are closed but it's the off season they have to get work done sometimes and it didn't effect our experience at all. The food was good the room was in full working order eg. Shower, AC and water pressure. The beach is amazing as always . The staff as per usual at this resort were excellent they always go above and beyond . We throughly enjoyed our little 4 day vacation to the Colonial and will 100% be back someday.
