I booked a 2 night stay, then became unwell and hospitalised the weekend before. As soon as this happened I tried to call the hotel to see if I could move my booking to no avail on the Saturday, after days of trying, I finally got through the day before I was due to arrive and meet with the most unhelpful, unsympathetic and rude ‘manager’. Who told me ‘it wasn’t his problem and there was nothing they could do’ It wasn’t as if I was asking for a refund, I just wanted to move the stay. He was ridiculously condescending in his manner. Just another case of a greedy hotel, happy to take my money but that was all they were happy to do. So disappointing, customer service just isn’t the same anymore.
I generally only leave reviews if they are positive but I am making an exception for this one!! The first room we stopped in had no electricity and no one answered the phone so all night unable to charge phones etc - we did have the main light though. Managed to swap rooms the next day - bed in first room had the cheapest mattress ever and so we spent the day with back ache. The second room had a better bed but the window wouldn’t shut and the noise from revellers outside was horrendous and we had to have the noisy aircon on as it was freezing. The underfloor heating doesn’t work. The lights are all orange so no chance of putting makeup on and the hairdryer was broken. The shower is in the bath and the bath is huge so a real struggle for an older person to get into the shower- good job my husband could lift me in and out. Next to the breakfast - the hours say till 9am but it’s actually regimental 8.45- we got there at 8.46 and were told we too late and the kitchen was closed but it wasn’t as the young lady was cooking herself a huge fry up. But the fact that 2 mice ran over our feet at the bottom of the stairs had put us off really! Please don’t stop here it’s truly dreadful.…
Let put it this way i have been trying for two years now to recover money paid up front in November 2019 for a 3 night stay in may 2020 and was cancelled due to lock and re booked for a year later and was again cancelled due to lock down for the second time i will not give up time to get legal me thinks,
To say I was nervous about coming here after booking and then seeing reviews, would be an understatement. I had NOTHING to fear. This is a great little hotel. The decor may not be to everyone's taste but I love the industrial, distressed wood. The bed was so comfortable, we both slept really well. The bathroom was big, clean, modern and the rainfall shower was a real treat. Breakfast every morning, over the road at the sister pub, could not be faulted. Cereals, croissants, fruit, yoghurt, tea, coffee, fruit juices and fantastic full cooked breakfast. You could order the usuals in any combination and they would gladly accommodate. The room has tea and coffee (nesspresso machine - no rubbish instant). All in all this was a really lovely stay in a lovely, clean and comfortable hotel. I really can't get my head around the negative reviews on this site.…
Gross!!! Stayed here and was vile!! Sophie is terrible in reception and owns a dismal attitude. Hideous phone manners. Totally shabby and very much required a refund. Please heed this advice and do not stay. Even the location doesn't help this shower of poor!
Just to give people a heads up regarding a hotel. Myself daughter and he partner stayed at a hotel in Newport a few weeks ago and I would highly recommend never staying there. Please avoid the Charter House like the plague. Room 1 in particular was disgusting. No ventilation and air con was useless. The sink plug didn’t work but you don’t realise this until it’s too late. The bath plug didn’t work so no bath to be had. Because of the lack of ventilation the condensation was building up on the inside of the windows and pools of water formed on the windowsills. This also led to severe mould in the furniture which we didn’t find until the morning when we decided to dig a little deeper to see where the smell of damp was coming from. The amount of damp and dirt just confirmed the hotel had not been cleaned properly for quite some time. The carpets were stained and generally the place was not clean. I have tried to speak to the owner but have now decided to report to Environmental Health, Trading Standards and warn the public. A few photos are attached to give an idea of the state of the place.…
Ideal location if wanting to stay in Newport town Center. Room appeared clean on first impressions, however had a damp smell!! The windows wern't clean with one of them with writing on the glass 'you love cocks'. Beds were disappointing as the mattress you could feel the springs. Advertised unfloor heating and instructions were left but could not get it to work. We had issues with the air con (same as in other reviews) no remote and after having a shower the air con was dripping water onto the carpet next to the bed head ?previous issues as damp stain on carpet. To resolve issue there are no staff on site, so tried calling their number no answer. Ended up calling the emergency mobile number. Issue was resolved while we were out at dinner but had no conformation from staff even though they said they would call us back. Positives really good shower and good working TV. Overall feel the room is over priced! Would not stay again.…
This hotel is shockingly bad! From the front door that doesn’t lock, to the lobby door that has no security, the reception that once you have checked in only ever has shutters down, the filthy communal areas, the stained and smelly carpet in the room, the mattress that is so worn I had to sleep on the quilt to stop the springs digging into me, the air conditioning that doesn’t work and doesn’t even have a remote control, or any other kind of control in the room, the fan that is as filthy as everything else, the windows that do not open, the broken blinds, and best of all ?? The dirty bedding! Oh and I almost forgot about the fact that there is often no hot water.. And that you have to go across the road to a not very well kept pub for breakfast, and that you are told that because of COVID 19 rules, no one can enter your room once you have checked in.. I could go on and on, but my review would be as long as my four night stay seemed.. Should have stayed in Parkhurst cleaner more comfortable, more secure and staff more useful A joke of a hotel !!!…
This hotel is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. I sent an email to them on Friday 17th September to which I still have not received a response. Cleanliness does not exist in this hotel and I am in touch with the local council regarding the safety of a room that has no air conditioning and no windows that open more than an inch. I am also speaking to them about the claim that the staff are not allowed to enter the rooms once guests have checked in. The whole place is dirty and full of substandard furniture and equipment. Breakfast is served across the road in yet another very dirty establishment, and the so called full English appeared to be prepared in a microwave. The security at Charter House is shocking, the main entrance door is supposedly self locking but most guests are not aware of the fact that they should hold the door until it locks and so the door was usually open to anyone. The reception shutter was only open when we checked in, we never saw the shutter up again during our four day stay. I was made aware at one point that there was someone there, so why the shutter was always down is a mystery, I can only assume it was to avoid the guests. The interior lobby door to the staircase to the rooms again had no working security. Often there was no hot water - the list of complaints is endless. I do have photographic evidence.…
Stayed here this weekend sept 2021 Firstley the location is excellent and if you read the terms of parking or ask it says parking is first come ist served ..There is parking around newport within walking distance .. Also there is no lifts so its stairs again read the hotel website ,, We had room 5 on the top floor accessed by a key fob from the reception and a key to the room very quirky and every thing you need including a nespresso machine bath and big bathroom air con was working fine and comfortable bed ,, Yes breakfast is continental and left out side your room in the morning so please be aware but there is plenty of cafes ect around the area should you choose something else ,, Also bear in mind you are staying in the middle of newport so some noise will be present outside .. Personally the hospitality sector has been through a tough time of late and my advice if you want 5 star and water side location try elsewhere and pay more .. Sophie the young lady on reception is helpful and managing very well .…
