My wife and I recently visited Porto, Portugal. We chose the Caleway Hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia. I am so glad we did.

This hotel was formerly a jail and it was converted into a 26 room hotel in 2019. It is deceptive from the outside as it is only a double green door that opens into a small lobby. However, once you pass the entrance there is a large reception room with a lovely skylight above which allows wonderful daylight into the room. The 3 story hotel has rooms equipped with small balconies that open to lovely views of the City of Porto.

There is a lovely continental breakfast included each day and it is a perfect way to start your day.

The staff was wonderful.............polite, helpful, professional and eager to please. There is also an 'Honor Bar" which was a refreshing and lovely change to the commercial minibars that grace hotel rooms of larger properties. The bar is open 24 hours and you can buy water, beer or a drink and simply sign a voucher for the item, which is later billed to your room.

The rooms are equipped with a rather modest coffee maker (a local brand I believe) and it was a bit cheesy. It did not work well and the coffee was more like instant than brewed. On the positive side the shower featured a wand and a "rain forest" shower head that had great water pressure and plenty of hot water.

The hotel is located a short walk from the riverfront and lots of restaurants and bars. It is also close to the World of Wine museum which is fantastic (see separate review). We walked everywhere including crossing the bridge to the Porto side of the river for dinner one evening.

The ultimate question is, would we stay here again and the answer is yes. It is lovely and pleasant. If you are looking for a boutique hotel that is small and civilized, you should try this one.

Our Covid impacted "on/off"trip to Porto being finally back on again we booked this establishment very much at the last minute and were very pleased with our choice. The location is excellent, only a minute or so to walk to the south bank of the river down a narrow and characterful street. The property itself is very deceptive. Charmingly unprepossessing, narrow and vernacular from the outside , step inside to a very well modernized older building over several floors (lifts provided for those who cannot manage stairs) at the front with a brand new extension to the rear, combining successfully and retaining some beautiful old stonework. Quiet and relaxed, private rear yard provides a pleasant sitting out area and good spot for al fresco breakfast from the very good offer provided. Clean and well presented, air conditioned rooms with towels, toiletries, water, coffee machine , safe, ample storage, decent lighting, comfy beds, good ensuite facilities, many with balconies providing lovely views. Absolutely excellent, friendly, helpful, welcoming staff, our room being ready even though our flight had us arrive rather early.. Left luggage facility. Nice birthday touch for a cynical old man like me. Absolutely no hesitation in saying we will certainly be back if fortunate enough to return to Porto.

Excellent, boutique type hotel located in the Gaia area of Porto, approximately half an hour by taxi from the airport.

The hotel is accessed by a fairly narrow road in an area of old Gaia which is quite unique as it provides accommodation for local residents and tourists alike, all supported by a mix of family owned restaurants, small supermarkets and bars. The immediate area can best be described as quaint, but there is ample evidence of gathering investment of which, the Caleway is a great example.

As highlighted in other reviews, access to the hotel is via an unremarkable green door which then opens into ‘new build’, stone built, space which is both light and airy. Bedrooms are minimalistic with a very comfortable large bed, bathroom with excellent walk in shower, coffee maker, tv and sufficient wardrobe space. Small balcony is a bonus. Other strong features include the wide ranging breakfast menu and the self service ‘honesty’ bar at competitive prices. The staff could not have done more - the young lady in charge of the breakfast room even made the honey cake which was part of the offering.

The hotel is a short walk down to the river Douro and promenade. There is easy access to the many port houses of international repute including Taylor’s, Sandeman and Croft. Entry to cable cars and river boat rides also minutes away. The opposite bank of the river is more ‘touristy’ with a much wider selection of restaurants and bars, plus the cathedral and tourist buses from which to explore. Make your way there from Gaia via a ten minute walk over the bridge.

In summary, Porto is a brilliant city for a short break and the Caleway an excellent base for the stay.

Amazing views of Porto from the hotel room. Large windows and balcony, I loved just laying in bed and looking at the view. They also have a rooftop you can check out for 360 degree views. I had a room overlooking the courtyard so very quiet, no street noise or traffic. Room was modern and clean. TV even had Netflix, which isn’t that common so I was thrilled. Breakfast buffet had a great selection of sweet and savoury and the pastries were particularly delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location, just a couple minutes walk from lots of restaurants and the best views of Porto.

We stayed here for 4 nights. The hotel is amazing. The outside of the hotel entrance is just two small green doors... almost like a house. You ring the doorbell (or swipe your room card once checked in) and enter into quite a roomy reception area. It's really lovely. The reception staff a young lad was incredibly helpful, checked us in, took us to our room , explained everything en route. We had a free bottle of water in the room which was pretty standard 4* nice with a great garden view. The bed was incredibly comfortable.
The breakfast was very nice, cold meats, cheese, fruit, cakes, pastries, nice fresh bread, eggs, bacon, mushroom, lovely fruit juices, coffee, tea what more could anyone want!!!
There is an outside area with tables and chairs to enjoy, an honesty bar, I would say really lovely surroundings, the hotel is very tastefully presented.
The location is fabulous, near the port houses, river, restaurants. I loved it here and will recommend to everyone. I will stay here again if I come back to Porto.

The rooms are large and spacious.
It is not run like a hotel as although you can have breakfast no other meals are offered. The reception is manned from early morning until midnight. Staff are helpful. Feels more like serviced rooms than a hotel. However it is stylish and appealing. There is an honesty bar which is very reasonable. Great base to go sightseeing. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.

This place was great! It was clean and comfortable, had a great breakfast, had several gathering places, included an honor-based bar for small purchases, and had a perfect location for visiting Gaia and Porto. There were many small shops and pubs lining the short hill up from the strip for a quick glass of wine or cup of coffee.

We also have to say the staff was helpful and patient, taking time for directions. questions, arranging cabs, etc. Anna was just exceptional in her patient advice and arrangements. And we have to give a nod to Guilherme as well.

Don’t let the simple facade fool you - a spacious room is waiting there.

Gorgeous hotel on back streets of Vila Gaia. It's like the Tardis meets the Secret Garden. Go through the front door into an elegant lobby.Lots of lovely space in the inner garden. Pretty breakfast room and we has bedroom in newer section of hotel overlooking the gardens with view of cable cars and World of Wine. All the staff were very friendly and owners especially so. If I was coming to Porto again, I would definitely stay here.
Ate out at Vinum at Grahams Port- pricey but worth the experience- and then at two local restaurants on same street as hotel. Cozinha de Ci ( or something like that) run by mother daughter team, 20 covers and full by 7.10pm. Get there early and wait for it to open.
Also Taste and Meet Portugal which was ok; girls watiressing were amazing and v friendly...couple of boys bit more powermad and less friendly.

This is a very pleasant place to stay. It is newly constructed and completely deceptive from the outside, it looks tiny but is much larger at the rear. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The breakfast was particularly friendly for English people. I think they could have been more generous with things like water and coffee capsules in the rooms. It is well located on the South side of the Douro.

+ : Hotel situation is really good. Rooms are clean and comfortable.

- : Difficult to stop in order to leave the luggae (one way street). Not easy to find the place, we had to call the hotel and another couple was in the same situation as we saw them at the reception few minutes later...
The BIG issue is the noise. Impossible to sleep during the night because windows are not sufficiently isolated so you can ear all the cars going up the road. Really anoying because it doesn't stop!

Be very careful by picking this hotel, everything looks good and the hotel is nice but for me my priority of a hotel is to be able to sleep correctly which is definitely not the case.

By the way we complaint at reception and wanted to talke to the manager. He was not available and we should send an email. Sent it 2 and never heard back. So finally we have to stay with the apologizes of the receptionist, who couldn't do anything, but was honest enough to tell us that she knew about the problem as other guest already complaint.
