Beautiful, impressive building, full of character and history. We were greeted with warmth by Huw and given so much information about the history of the building and its famous occupants, in fluent English (thank you). The decor is wonderful
sympathetically done, incorporating modern touches -fabulous, huge portrait of Colette. We loved our room, which had been very kindly upgraded to a suite! The bed was comfortable with quality linen and French windows with a double aspect. We had a short walk around the grounds and played giant draughts in the gardens. We had cocktails in the reading room and then dinner. Our compliments to the chef, it was one of the best meals we have ever eaten and presented beautifully. Star of the show was my sugared apple which was more beautiful than a Christmas Bauble and delicious. Lola provided an excellent service, very warm and professional with again, perfect English (very grateful). We left on cloud nine and will definitely return.

I took my family to stay at the Chateau de Castel Novel on 17 August. We also dined there that evening. The hotel is beautiful, the dinner was fabulous, the setting idyllic (tranquil and totally peaceful), and the staff excellent. We couldn't fault any of it. My husband and I then had reason to stay there again at short notice on Wednesday night and when we turned up they had upgraded us without charge!! We were thrilled! This place would also make a fabulous honeymoon base. Can't recommend enough...

Stayed for only one night at the end of August.

At check-in the staff were extremely helpful, carrying all our luggage for us, and refusing us from even taking the smallest of parcels. We had originally booked for a small mansard room. When we got there, the very helpful receptionist informed us that we had been upgraded to a better, larger room, in the chateau itself, all this complimentary "bien sur".

The room, in two stages, was lovely. It had a perfect view of the area. The bed was comfortable, and the room had all the amenities you would want.

The grounds of the hotel were also superb. Although we did not use the swimming pool, it did look extremely inviting!

The best though was the dinner. We ordered the "Les gourmandises de Bel Gazou", which consisted of two appetisers, one entree (foie gras or risotto), one main (lamb or fish), cheese, desert, and last the mignardises. Everything was delightful. The lamb, served in three different styles was exquisite. I ate it really slowly so that it would last longer. The surprise however were the mignardises. I was expecting a few bonbons with our coffee. Oh no - you get a trolly laden with sweeties, sorbets, marshmallows, the lot.... of you can choose 4. It was having dessert all over!

Breakfast, although on the expensive side (EURO 23) was also very good and recommended. The buffet had a wide range of hot breakfast food (sausages, bacon, eggs, etc...), cold meats and cheese, pastries, yoghurts, cereals, fruits etc....

All in all this place is amazing, the staff are extremely attentive and friendly, and the food is to die for (definitely worthy of their Michelin star).

The only downside of our stay is that we only stayed there for one night!

CULTURE, CHARM AND A GREAT WELCOME AT CASTEL NOVEL

Tucked away in the ancient forests of deepest France, a special chateau hotel hides in the woods. Once the home of the legendary French author, Colette - and just moments from the start of the historic Route of Richard the LIonheart - this castle waits to delight. Family owned, there is a warm welcome at Reception and a welcome drink is offered on the old stone terrace - high above the vineyards. A sparking pool gleams on the edge of terraced gardens, a 15th century turret watches over guests taking tea on the patio, and the 32 rooms and 5 suites are elegantly furnished with traditional antiques. Our suite, number 9, was on two levels and the quaint bathroom - under the eaves and overlooking the forests – was a treat. Dinner in the ancient dining hall was also a treat: expertly prepared by resident chef, Nicolas Soulié. Activities on site include hiking, mountain trails, biking and tennis. The beauty of the location is an inspiration. This is a rich find indeed. Daphne Beames

My wife and I stayed at the Château for 5 days in August, it was from start to finish a wonderful experience with just one or two reservations rather than criticisms. We had reserved a standard room and had dinner every night from the 51 euro menu, occasionally dipping into the ‘a la carte’.
The hotel is stunning, set in its own wooded parklands. It has a large 20 metre swimming pool situated below the chateau with its own attendant who serves drinks/snacks throughout the day. Our room was in the roof area on the 2nd floor which was gained by climbing the circular staircase of the medieval tower…or you can use the lift! The room and attached bathroom were well kept throughout, the bedroom has modern flat screen television and internet connection, wifi is available in the lounge.
All the staff are very friendly and eager to please, nothing is too much trouble at any time. At dinner they get to know you very quickly, although some might find the attention a little too much at times. Eating at the chateau for five nights would bring my only reservation in that the menu did not change at all, even by using the a la carte it is not possible to avoid repeating some of the menu…not that you could find anything to dislike, the food is wonderful and beautifully presented. The wine list is extensive, ranging from around 24 euros upwards to !!! but there are many good wines at around 30 euros. The weather meant that we could eat on the terrace for most of our stay…very romantic.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and full of history, with lovely towns such as Uzerche and Treignac. You can follow the ‘Route de Richard, Coeur de Lion’ which travels quite near to the castle, plus the many references to the ‘Black Prince’ and the ‘Hundred Years War’. If you can, travel to Oradour Sur Glane, which is about an hour to the north, but beware, it is an emotive place. Here, on 10th of June 1944, the entire population of over 600 were murdered by an SS detachment and the village was destroyed. The ruins of the village have been preserved by the French government as a reminder of the inhumanity of this deed and its lesson to be heeded…or not? We went on a brilliantly sunny morning with very few others in the village with us,,,,very powerful!
Overall, the château is a great ‘treat’, it is expensive, but you get what you pay for. The hotel owner is constantly supervising the running of the day; she is there at breakfast and at dinner. She has a tremendously happy and willing team around her who are always available, this includes her husband who is the head chef.
To sum it up I would say, go on spoil yourself!!

The hotel is located very conveniently 90mins north of Toulouse and the property is offering well maintained and comfortable rooms. I stayed in the main building, and given its a castle, rooms have quirky layouts, but nothing is amiss in terms of convenience and luxury. The hotel's restaurant is in itself a reasonable to visit! The degustation menu offers the cook the great chance to show the kitchen talents and there is no disappointment here! Service is also great, and the wine list has a few gems on it otherwise not easily found. E.g. a great Condrieu is included which is rare given the tiny size of the appellation, I didn't get to use some of the the other features (pool, cycling, event space), but can see that the hotel offers not only short stay visitors a reason to drop by. Overall, a fantastic place, with most friendly service and hospitality.

We stayed here for two nights for our anniversary. Oh, what a beautiful castle in a stunning setting. We were upgraded to the suite in the turret, with a huge bed in a round, canopied room and a small, elegant sitting room with a Juliet balcony. We had beautiful views and plenty of peace and quiet. The room had Old World decor and charm with modern conveniences; it was dreamy. The whole castle is clearly constantly refurbished while maintaining its grandeur and sense of history. The hotel staff was top-notch and attentive. We had cocktails outside on the edge of the garden while the sun set over the hill: Gorgeous. The breakfast was lovely in a long, elegant windowed room facing the woods.

Only negatives: The pool was closed when we were there in May, though it was warm enough to swim. And while the elegant restaurant had excellent service, our main course was just not good. (We had fish that was completely tasteless; the sauce it was served with was insufficient and just did not work) The starter and dessert were far better -- as was the wine -- but for the hype and the expense, we'd hoped for better. Sometimes, a restaurant has an off-night, but our expectations were high.

That said, the Chateau was luxurious and welcoming. It was a good base for exploring the Dordogne (by car -- foot or bike is another matter) and so very, very romantic.

The chateau is magical, beautiful, well maintained and set in wonderful grounds. Arrived after a long drive to a very friendly welcome and a wonderful room--warm (in November), charming and relaxing; great bed; everything we could need in a room. Afternoon cuppa and then a walk in the garden. We booked dinner. Food is fine dining with limited choice but exquisite, nouvelle cuisine style. On reflection, it wasn't what we needed and ended up being very pricey (€200+) including a bottle of wine. It had the reverence and hush associated with it that many Brits feel is a little over the top. It was hard to relax and talk normally as the noise level was very muted, in spite of 30+ people eating. Overall, high class place probably more suitable for a longer stay than the short overnight that we had. We will return.

Not only is this place beautiful, the grounds immaculate, the pool and pool-house wonderful and the food to die for, but the family behind it all is amazing. We had broken down in our vehicle and they couldn't have done more to be helpful - to sort out a replacement and to make us feel so welcome. Our children LOVED being there, as did we. It is quite the most personal, efficient and kind service I have ever received in many years of worldwide travel. Visit now!
