Some hotels have chosen toilets where the water level is very close to the seat. This cause a most unwelcoming and possible unhealthy interaction between the male anatomy and the toilet water. The toilet industry and the hotel industry don't seem to want to deal with this problem.

This is a new one on me in my 35 year Hotel career, but thank you for pointing this out. I will point out that newer style toilets are 'roomier'. Geoff Conrad General Manager

On an unscheduled business trip, rooms were available here that weren't elsewhere in town, however 2 of 3 of us had to stay in "old style exterior door" motel annex behind the main inn. Would describe experience as a 2 star type room.... basic but clean, bed comfortable. Breakfast is not free.... about $12 and of Days Inn quality (buffet...

I'm sorry you were't totally satisfied with your first stay here in Middlebury. We do have some exterior entrance rooms that are undergoing a facelift right now. I appreciate the fact that you didn't want to pay for breakfast, however we don't claim to be a B & B and certainly the experience will be different. Maybe you'll give us...

Lovely hotel, in a great location. Super friendly staff with and excellent restaurant and breakfast. We were able to eat dinner on the terrace and listen to a live jazz concert. They also had a great bike lockup.

The Inn is historic and charming, and centrally located. We stayed in the annex, which is serviceable but less charming. The main issue was the very strong sanitizing smell, a powerful masking odor that I associate with only bottom level accommodations covering up other smells. We opened the windows and the door, and after a few hours it had dissipated....

I'm sorry you discovered a strong smell upon arrival, but happy it dissipated over a short time. I don't know the specific situation, but we certainly could have been more aware and not given you a room with a problem such as that. Thank you for your nice comments otherwise. My sister got married at this location, and it was wonderful. From the gorgeous location to the family friendly amenities around Middlebury to the ease and convenience of the on-site Tavern and restaurant... we had a great weekend! Loved the quirks of the old building, and was especially excited to see they have AC units (it was a hot week...

We had a lot of fun with your wedding family as well and appreciate your nice thoughts. 189 year old Inns can be very quirky and creaky, but fi you appreciate this, it can be charming as you pointed out. And wasn't that a hot summer weekend! We've had a few of them this year, as Global Warming has certainly...

I stayed in the Middlebury ("extended stay") Annex -- the small motel in back of the historic inn. It was wonderful -- clean, comfortable, and well-located. Local bus service in the town was excellent (I did not have a car with me) and most everything was within walking distance anyway. The motel rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, which provided me...

Thank you for your nice comments. The Middlebury Inn has two extended stay rooms with small kitchens that are ideal for anyone staying for more than a few days, especially if on a budget. And we are very convenient to any shopping that might be desired as you pointed out. I'm happy you discovered the Middlebury Food Co-op, one of...

Charming old historic hotel with a great staff ready to please you with any request. If you want to relieve the days that Grover Cleveland stayed there, this is the place to stay when you want to have a visit to Vermont.

I was trying to figure out who owned the Middlebury Inn back when Grover Cleveland was President in the mid to late '90's and came up blank. I appreciate the history lesson however and also your nice comments about our staff. They will be pleased. Thank you for staying with us. Geoff Conrad General Manager

There are those historic inns and hotels that are renovated and comfortable, while retaining its historic character. Alas, the Middlebury Inn is not one of them. Our room was cramped; the beds were uncomfortable; the bathroom was spartan; and we had to schlep our bags up two flights of stairs to get there. (An elevator was available, but is "staff...

Thank you for your comments and I'm sorry you were disappointed. An historic Inn is not for everybody, although you should expect to find clean, comfortable accommodations and clearly you didn't. I hope you'll give us another opportunity if you ever have occasion to return. Again, thank you. Geoff Conrad General Manager

Great place - very close to college and wonderful rooms, service, food. Was upgraded prior to arrival. The Inn has charm and dining outside was great. Breakfast the next morning, which was included with the room, was excellent. Super service, friendly people..and the maple candies at the front desk were amazingly good.

My husband and I had a pleasant experience at the Inn. Staff is cordial and knowledgeable. The Morgan Tavern has good quality food, and a friendly wait staff. The building is generally well maintained, and has a lovely décor. The only issue was lack of an elevator, during our stay.
