This is a family owned lodge, and you can tell that they want you to feel at home as soon as you get there. The rooms are large, clean, with well-equipped kitchenettes. We grilled our dinners every night in the downstairs bbq pits, after enjoying the river in the early evening. We spent most of the time enjoying the view, the birds from the back porch. The owners live onsite, so they are available if you ever need anything. This is the second time that we lodge here, the first time more than 10 years ago, we stayed with our two boys and we had a great time, enjoying the area and the Garner and Lost Maples parks. We love this lodge and will be back sooner next time!
Located by the river (a sloping lawn separates the building from the river), this lodge has an old world charm. The owners live on site, and are helpful. The river has both a portion with a minor rapid, and also aportion which is deep, appropriate for swimming/fishing. They have barbecue pits.
We stayed at Sabinal River Lodge in November. For a 2 star it was ok but there did not seem to be any soundproofing between the rooms. We were in room 2 and heard the TV all evening in room 1 and then the phone conversation the lady in room 3 had at 11pm. So, unless you are a group staying I think you need to bear that in mind as it wasn’t very private. On the plus side the heating was very efficient for a very cold night.
These rooms are clean, updated, spacious, the beds are extremely comfortable. This place was definitely the highlight of an eight day trip with eight males. Owner particularly friendly and made our stay most enjoyable, even though we got there quite late.
We were meeting a group of friends in Lost Maples for the weekend. Booked two nights at a place in Leakey at the suggestion of a friend. After the first night, we knew we weren't doing a second. It was horrible. We were fortunate to find a vacancy at the Sabinal River Lodge and it was wonderful. The rooms are quite spacious and decorated very nicely. I was impressed with the attention to detail in all the little touches. The only thing I didn't see (and might just have missed it!) was a hair dryer, which would be helpful. The walls are a natural pine with fir beams on a vaulted ceiling. It feels like a lodge/retreat with nice linens and a completely stocked kitchenette. Even a nice round table with four chairs for eating or playing games. There's a large balcony off each room with a lovely view of the grounds and the river. There was a large grill there for guests' use and plenty of room to lounge around. We've definitely found our "home away from home" when we're anywhere in the area. Hope you'll give them a try. You won't be sorry!…
Lovely comfortable room, fully stocked kitchen, comfy beds, lovely balcony area and seating to watch the dozens of hummingbirds feeding. The view of the grounds down to the river was so serene, and at night it's a blanket of fireflies at sunset. The short walk down to the river is very nice, and to sit on a rock or cypress stump with your toes in the water is sublime, I even had a swim down there. Under the lodge is a communal area to BBQ, sit and hang out, there's a fridge for your beers, and there's even covered parking for your motorcycles, which we loved. Your hosts are wonderful, but not at all intrusive, if you need something for the kitchen they will have it for you before the end of the day, so kind. We will be back next year for sure....can't wait!
Utopia is a very small town down in a beautiful part of the Texas Hill Country so you don't have a lot of options when it comes to accommodations. My husband and I stayed here for a couple of nights and found it fine. It was a little hard on both of us as all the rooms are up a long flight of stairs and we both have bad knees (yes, we're old!). But the rooms themselves are spacious and have a small kitchenette in them with a stove and frig. There's also a table for 4 at which you can eat meals, play games, etc. My favorite part is the sliding glass doors that lead out onto a huge covered porch with lots of seating and a nice view of the Sabinal. Also, it's convenient for smokers since you can smoke on the covered porch just outside your room. They didn't have an ice machine so be sure to bring a cooler and your own ice (there's a place in town where you can buy ice). There were two queen beds in the room which were comfortable and everything was very clean. This would be a good place for a small family such as a couple with two kids. The flat screen was a little small considering it was all the way across a good sized room from the beds, but we didn't come there to watch TV anyway. This is a most beautiful part of Texas so get out and see it! Lost Maples State Park is just up the road, which is an other-worldly place, and the Rio Frio is a few miles back toward Leakey and Concan. If you haven't ever experienced "Texanna" at it's best, go in the spring and early summer and attend the jukebox dances at Garner State Park, which go on every evening, where people whirl and twirl in a beautiful setting overlooking the Frio River. You won't be sorry!…
The view of the river from the back of the property is beautiful. The rooms are spacious and have the "lodge"look and feel. It is great to have a kitchenette. The rooms are very clean. There are the piles of building materials and other junk laying all around. The curb appeal is disappointing with all the miscellaneous things piled around. Also, sheets on the beds are a poor quality.
There are not many places to stay in the area. It was great to find nice and clean accommodations. The innkeepers are very friendly and great hosts too. Make reservations at The Laurel Tree for lunch or supper on Saturday too. Its a real treat! My daughter and I had a fabulous weekend hiking, staying at a nice place and eating well. I cant wait to do it again!
This place is super super awesome. If your staying in Utopia, do yourself a favor and stay here. It's wonderful!!! The owner Kim makes the stay even better!! I'd give it 10 Stars if I could!!!! Treat yourself to this establishment next time you are in Utopia!!!!
