I have just returned from a week stay at Clear View and can pick out the good and bad points of the suites. We hired a 2 bed villa, and had the most stunning view of the North Shore, right on the cliff tops - ask for any of the upper suites in Rose Villas and you can't go wrong - it is simply breathtaking. You can even see the fish swimming in the turquoise waters beneath you!
If not for the view, however I would have been very disappointed and may have moved to a more modern hotel! The accomodation although exceptionally cleaned (- fully cleaned, hovered and fresh linen everyday) is rather tired and dated, and is in need of updating badly. The grounds are well kept and tidy.
Landfall restaurant is not to be recommended - we ordered take away which left a lot to be desired!
The suites are also located in a more run down part of the island and taxis would be recommended to get around at night.
However I was advised that at the end of this season the owners are carrying out extensive renovation work to the whole site - which is a large one. I think this will be needed if this is to stay in business as at present there is a lot of chioce on the Island. I will be interested to see how this turns out as this site really does have a lot of potential.
Overall, the stunning views and exceptional cleaning service made up for what the villa lacked in the style of some of the modern hotels. It really depends on what you are looking for.

My wife and I stayed one week at Clear View in October 2002. This hotel is beautifully situated on Bermuda's north shore between Hamilton and St. George. Our spacious room had a balcony overlooking the ocean, from which we enjoyed some beautiful sunsets. We had a stove with an oven, refrigerator, and cable tv. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was decidedly layed back. The Bermuda Railway Trail ran through the property, great for walks. Ther was a well stocked supermarket less than a mile away. There were two pools, but no beach. The nearest beach was Shelly Bay, about a mile west. There was a very attractive restaurant called the Landfall, but alas, the food was less than spectacular and over-priced, even for Bermuda.

We stayed at Clearview Cottages during February of 2002 and I'm voicing my opinion now in 2005, because I just can't imagine the rooms being as bad as described by some reviewers. Keep in mind that our stay was during the slow season, so we were upgraded to an oceanfront room and had the whole apartment of four units to ourselves.

We had a pleasant experience and I can only compare it to another efficiency-style apartment (I think the Barnesdale Apartments in Paget) and say that there is always a slight musty tinge in the rooms... maybe this is true of units that aren't constantly air conditioned (dehumidified) as the ones in the large hotels.

Our linens were replaced daily, and I took a good look at the pots, pans and dishes before using them. There were no signs of bugs or other pests in the room - I checked the corners and sliding door tracks.. cleaner than my own house!

The owners were quite friendly and attentive. I see that Expedia has dropped the Clearview Cottages from its package offerings this year. If the operators are the same, I think it should remain included as a choice for budget travelers and families.

I cannot say enough horrible things about this hotel- beware! I had never been to Bermuda before and was planning my wedding for August. I looked into ClearView and figured it was a good value for the money- I called the hotel and spoke to the owner. I cannot begin to tell you the lies she told- near the beach (it is a twenty minute walk away) beautiful suites (mice droppings and bugs) it goes on and on. I showed up with my family to find something that would not pass health codes- mice droppings, bugs, stains, musty smells, and mold everywhere! Never mind that I was in Bermuda for my wedding and honeymoon and my entire family had booked ClearView! The owner was horrible- she kept our money and was not at all apologetic about her blatant deceit! Meanwhile, Grotto Bay Hotel was a few miles down the road and felt so horrible that I had been scammed into Clear Views hotel that they honored Clear View's rate even though Grotto Bay regulary gets double the amount! Trust me, stay away from this hotel- it is absolutely disgusting- I have never placed a bad review before but felt I must warn others about Clear View

I have no idea what happened to this place since the other review posted here, but as of May 2003 - run. Run fast. The room was filthy - an ocean view means nothing if the windows are too dirty to look out of and won't open. The pots and pans were sitting in a pile of dirt. There were dead bugs everywhere and the air conditioner was broken. The room reeked of this sickly sweet air freshener. We didn't think the sheets had been changed from the last guests. I actually did not want to touch the couch. On top of that, the management was crazy - literally. When we went to ask for a better (e.g., clean) room, we weren't able to get a straight answer out of them. We decided to go back to the room and make a go of it, but when we got back to our room we found out that they told the maid (who wasn't very clean herself) to go to our room and pack up our stuff - without telling us. she basically threw our things into bags at random. We left as soon as a cab would take us away - and at least 4 other rooms did the same arrival and turn around while we were there. We ended up at Munro beach which was about the same price but could have been on a different planet. We almost cried when we saw how clean the room there was.

If you are going to Bermuda for business or vacation, the best place to stay is the property of Mr. & Mrs. Gerald & Ruth Paynter. The Clear View has been most befittingly named because its panoramas are absolutely breathtaking. As a guest you will be able to absorb them from the private balconies and patios of spacious suites. The villas are acattered at the water's edge-an ideal locale for snorkelling and fishing.
Also Landfall Restaurant , which is open for breakfast, lunch & dinner is in a turn of the century home designed by architect and artis Donald M. Kirkpatrick. Stepping onto the grounds is like stepping into "old Bermuda".

I booked 8 weeks in advance on a business trip, my travel agent said there were only two places on the island with a room, one was $1,000 a night the other was $189. I opted for £189, I read the reviews and also thought, it can't be that bad, I'll never make that mistake again! The ajoining door is broken so whilst I cannot get into their room they have ful access to mine. The patio door is wedged with wood, the beds are truely awful, the pool was freezing, the furniture is passed tired, in fact the whole place wants demolishing. I am not even venturing into the restaurant following a conversation with the taxi driver on the way there. The taxi driver was kind enough to supply a list of alternative guest houses to try if I'm ever stuck for a place to stay, he was embarrassed for his island to subject tourist or business people to this establishment

After 30 hours of travel with essentially no sleep, we (husband, myself and two teens) arrived at Clear Water to be told that our room wasn't ready. Over an hour later I walked up to front desk to officially check in. They disappeared into back office with my credit card only to reappear 15 minutes later with a receipt of my credit card having had been charged more than twice the agreed upon reservation price. Upon saying that clearly a mistake had been made, the manager brusquely dismissed my comment and walked away. Pulling up the email with agreed upon price, she refused to look at it and instead continued rant that she never agreed upon the price and that we needed to find somewhere else to stay. The email with price had been sent from Clear View a few weeks before. The manager was rude, unhelpful and her one attempt at a feeble apology came too late. Our saving grace was another woman who was working there who had compassion for our situation. She used her personal phone to help us connect with a local man who took us in for the night. This is high season so we were pretty much out of other options. I have never come across an establishment not honoring a reservation price. We will be reporting the manager this week to the equivalent of better business bureau while in Bermuda.

Where should I start? We asked for a non-smoking room and were next to (in the bungalow) smokers who smoked on the balcony!! We could not use our balcony or even open the doors or windows! The rooms were musty and not too clean - roaches and mice-droppings! And during our 4-day stay the room was cleaned only once! Let's just say we don't recommend it.

Bathrooms were filthy, bedrooms smelled horrible. They didn't clean daily. Had to beg the one male housekeeper to sweep on our last day. Pool was filthy. So sad because they have a prime infinity pool with a terrific view. Do not stay here. Owner is a horrible lady, very rude!
