Starting with positives the rooms are nice, clean with great views and comfortable. All of interactions with the staff were pleasant and friendly.
We only marked this is a 3, the lowest score we used on our trip to Australia, because this is a conference hotel which we should have spotted.
Men outside your room at 3 in the morning shouting because they cant find their room was part of it.
The other part was our restaurant experience. The food is very good, a talented chef who prepares a great menu.
Our problem was that we felt incredibly rushed. Having booked for 8pm we were advised to sit down earlier, as the litchen closes at 9pm. We thought that would be for last orders but clearly they wanted the room clear and fully set up for breakfast by 10pm.
The ambience is also very corporate, laddish banter, loud, clattery and not at all for couples.
Other couples sat close to us felt the same.
Portable tables for the breakfast cereals and hotplates were being erected shortly after we sat down, we were rushed to the point that we were asked to settle our bill at 9.40 'as the till was closing'. Our dinner plates were collected by a server who had been cleaning tables with a spray and setting them up for breakfast, she had two dirty cloths is one hand and a bottle of spray under her arm.
All in all not that enjoyable.
We have raised it direct and they have apologised and asked if we would like a free return visit, assuring us that they will use our feedback to improve things in the future.
If we do travel back to Australia from the UK it is unlikely we would stay here again.

We live 15 minutes from Balgownie and went there many years ago, but were enticed to go there recently by a brochure in our letterbox offering a free wine tasting for two people (normally $15/person) and a notification that nearby residents receive a 10% discount on dining. We booked a tasting and lunch afterwards and had the pleasure of meeting Joanne at the tasting room who made us feel extraordinary welcome and gave us a wonderful tasting experience, so much so that we joined the wine club with many benefits. Afterwards we had a wonderful lunch served by the lovely Lisa with a bottle of Balgownie 2023 Black Label Pinot Noir (recommended by Joanne, $55) and a starter of seared kangaroo loin with macadamia pesto ($30) followed by a charcuterie platter ($52) of grilled bread, a variety of small goods, olives, and pickled cauliflower and onion. Charcuterie platters vary from place to place and while the one we had was very nice, perhaps a cheese or two and an additional a veggie or two would be nice. But no complaints. We’ll definitely be back!

This winery is amazing!

We drove about 1.5 hours from Melbourne to here the day before we were leaving the country. The rooms are quite large and we stayed on second floor of the complex left to the parking lot. The balcony overlooks a small field in front of the staff parking lot on the other side of the estate. The room itself features a living area and the bedroom is to the left of the entrance to the room. The entire furnishing is very modern and feels extremely cozy.

Strolling around the estate is very pleasant. Short distance from the spa and gym area. We tried to use the steam sauna during our stay and you would have to figure out how to turn it the steam on. (The timer switch is outside and next to the glass door leading into the swimming pool.)

One thing I would recommend fellow travelers staying or visiting the estate is their wine tasting. This is a must do experience to try the different wines Balgownie Estate has to offer.

The only downside to our stay was that one night here was too short!

On arrival at reception I got the impression that our “luxury” room was nearby.
It was actually in one of the accomodation buildings out side.
After entering room immediately we saw the shower could only be used by climbing over a near 1 meter lip of a spa bath to have a shower!
Great if you are under 50 but if you are at all disabled or older this a harrowing prospect.
We rang reception and all they could offer was a downgrade room with no view or we could walk over to another building with a pool……they have walk in showers!

Hospitality was average.

Restaurant food in evening was average.
But breakfast in morning was POOR!
No attention from staff.
Hot food was just warm
Coffee came out of a machine into paper cups for everyone in a sit down restaurant.
The cost of an actual cup and saucer would not be to much, surely.

We booked three nights after easter and the only rooms available were the spa suites. We opted to pay a little extra for a higher floor and hoping for a vineyard view but ended up getting a car park view. In the distance though we could see the ranges.

Rooms are comfortable and quite roomy with a kitchenette but no cooking facilities other than a microwave.

Spa did get some use.

Nespresso machine was great for the early morning cuppa sitting on the balcony.

A few negatives.

Housekeeping kept providing one washer despite there being two guests and us pointing this out on several occasions.

We enjoyed the onsite restaurant as well as the onsite tastings. It was great to not have to drive and hotel guests receive a complimentary wine tasting with their room package.

However whilst Odea and Jenny offered great service at the cellar door the same couldnt be said for Roman. Quite gruff and didnt allow us entry into the cellar door. Not sure he is a person who should be involved in customer service.

The onsite restaurant is very good and a must visit if a guest. Book in advance as they were fully booked on a weekday the day we dined here.

I would certainly come back to this lovely winery and they are not farfrom getting 5 star review from me.

Thank you for your feedback. Amenities in our rooms do vary. A full kitchen is available in our Directors Suite. Mini kitchenettes in our standard spa suites. Have passed your feedback on to our housekeeping team in relation to your face washers (most likely supply chain issues with our towel and linen services). We will be sure to congratulate Oday and Jenny on their contributions to your stay in Cellar Door. Restaurant 1309 is in hot demand. We highly recommend all our guests book ahead to avoid disappointment. The alternative is in room dining (dinner) if you are staying with us. We look forward to you visiting us again soon.

Booked a two night stay over Christmas 2022 with my wife and two daughters.
Was informed when booking in on Christmas Eve that breakfast on Christmas morning was served until 10.30am so we arrived for breakfast at 9.55am. Hotel staff were clearing all tables and preparing for Christmas lunch. I was rudely informed that breakfast was finished! I pleaded for access and was told to hurry up and see what food was left! Hardly 5 star service! One of our kids said that we should have had Christmas at home.

As we ate a totally unsatisfactory breakfast, staff moved tables and chairs all around us clearly indicating that we were obstructing their Christmas lunch preparations. I complained to reception and was told that they would pass on my complaint to senior management.

I checked out the following morning and was unable to speak with any member of senior management. Totally unacceptable treatment of a paying customer. It was obvious to me that the Christmas lunch customers had precedence over the hotel guests.

On a separate note several other items to note;
Cups in kitchen press in room were unwashed
Washing machine leaked water
Dust and cobwebs behind bedroom lockers
Shelves in wardrobes dusty and unclean
Mould growing in freezer
TV signal very poor
Internet signal in rooms was abysmal - less than 1mb.

Overall the Christmas experience of Balgownie was most disappointing. The hotel complex is not a 5 star resort. It would appear from other reviews posted many people have had similar experiences.
I will not be returning.

We sit at the estate for five nights. It was a great time.
The staff was extremely supportive, helpful gracious and looked to all the requirements that we had.
Our room had a great view into the estate; we had a nice balcony and the beds were very nice and comfortable.
The wine tasting goes the choices look quite good. The connoisseur (Jodie) knew what she was talking about, and she was very helpful with letting us try out different types of wine. We ended up buying a nice bottle of bubbles from her.
The kitchen could be a little better to align with the overall atmosphere that the estate brings forward. Don’t get me wrong. We really like the estate is just that sometimes the menu could be a little restrictive nature.
The location of the estate if great - quite easily accessible to a variety of things you may want to do in Yarra.

The staff at Balgownie we wanted to pass our gratitude to (who made our stay excellent)

What an absolute comedy show this place was. Where do I begin....

The room was so dated and dirty and was full of cobwebs, the shower curtain was white but basically brown at the bottom from grime. The wi fi signal was rubbish, the closet was minuscule and only had two coat hangers in it! I had to wait about 2 hours to have some more dropped off and the girl that dropped them off couldn't of been ruder! And for some reason our room had a cassette player, sorry is it 1985?

It didn't get much better in the restaurant and bar area either. The breakfast is severely overpriced at $28. The buffet was bland and I had a bad stomach afterwards. Also if you are charging $28 for a breakfast having to use a Nespresso pod machine that's laughable.

But wait theres more.... That afternoon we waited at the bar for about 25 minutes to get a drink, not because the bar was busy and other guests were being served but there was literally no one behind the bar. Once a staff member finally came out he was rude and very unhelpful.

All in all, the worst stay I have ever probably ever had in my life, from what looked like quite a nice estate online. The price they are charging not just for the rooms but the food and drink is ludicrous and I strongly advise anyone not to go to near this place, maybe unless you are a big antique fan that has cassette tapes to listen to!

Nestled in the Yarra Valley, the Balgownie Estate provides good accommodation for people wanting a central location. The staff were helpful and pleasant. The room was clean and comfortable. A drawback is that some of the rooms are located on the far end of the block of rooms. So, it can be a bit of a trek from the carpark. This is made up for though with the landscaping.

I am writing this from the comfort of my suite of the 3rd day here in this establishment.

I booked a queen standard room and subsequently made arrangements for an upgrade to a renovated suite after discovering that the initial room booked had not been refreshed. This was nicely done and the suite was well worth the price paid for the upgrade.

The suite was new, spacious and more than adequate for our 36th anniversary celebrations. As for meals, we ate at the 1309 for breakfasts and an evening at the open deck savouring delights from the Grazing menu.

We also participated in a Hot Air Balloon ride where the meet up was at the reception area of the resort here…. Nice and convenient. The experience was awesome and beyond expectations.

Finally, we decided this afternoon to pop by the cellar for a wine tasting experience.. after all, how could we spend 4 days here and not partake in the wine offerings of this place. The cellar was full.. but the lady sommelier assured us the wait should not be longer than 5 minutes. Well.. 15 minutes later, we decided to give this “must try” a miss. Why? I guess we were forgotten altogether.

If not for this episode, this place certainly warrants 5 stars .. I would also like to think and hope that it’s not because we were not locals here.

Hello there - Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at our Estate. It is so lovely to read how much you enjoyed our newly renovated suites and our onsite restaurant. Global Ballooning is definitely a very special experience we recommend to all our guests, and we are glad to hear you enjoyed it on your 36th anniversary. I do sincerely apologise for what you experience at our Cellar Door, I can assure you it was not because you were not locals. Our Cellar Door offers tastings form 10.30am to 4pm daily and some parts during the day are busier than others. We hope to be able to welcome you back to our Estate in the future.
