The most recent addition to the spectacular Mitchelton property, The Mitchelton Hotel is 58 rooms of laid back luxury on the banks of the Goulburn River. Designed by internationally renowned architecture and interior design firm Hecker Guthrie, the hotel features spacious rooms adorned with earthy tones, each of which opens to a generous private balcony overlooking the river or Mitchelton Vineyard. Just 90 minutes from Melbourne, yet a world away from the city, Mitchelton is a stones throw from some of Victoria’s finest food and wine producers. Guests will find joy in the delights of Muse Restaurant, which features a menu of local Goulburn Valley produce curated by Head Chef Jess Hayes and, of course, the best in show from the Mitchelton Wine Portfolio.

We spent three nights at The Mitchelton Hotel which is a beautiful property in a delightful setting among the vines along the banks of the Goulburn river. The hotel offers modern, well appointed rooms each with a sizeable balcony. The reception/ lobby is welcoming with comfortable seating and in the cooler weather a cosy fire makes it more enticing. The restaurant is housed in a seperate property, it’s a large open space and regrettably during our visit we found it cold, uninviting & lacking in atmosphere. However, it’s saving grace is it’s friendly & helpful staff and its excellent food. The restaurant also offers a selection of Mitchelton wines at reasonable prices. The cellar door for wine tasting is open to guests and worth a visit. This is a challenging time for the hospitality industry given the restrictions imposed as result of Covid 19. As a result, the hotel gym was closed, bath robes/ slippers were only available on request. Daily cleaning was not automatic and again had to be requested. The restaurant capacity was confined to 20 guests, offered a limited menu and guests were subject to a 90 minute dining duration. Wine tasting at the nearby cellar door was by appointment. Whilst we enjoyed our visit, it didn’t quite meet expectations with limited activities available at the property. That being said, the imposed restrictions are understandable in the current circumstances and I’ve no doubt they are in the best interests of guests.

Mitchellstown Winery is well renowned as being an 'events' venue. It is physically large and has a high profile.

And so it was pleasant surprise to receive a warm and genuine greeting when we arrived. Ryan and Kristen were the perfect hosts. We had our glass of complementary wine whilst engaging in general chit chat with them which was quite free flowing. They did manage to make us feel special. Great service guys.

And so it was with all staff in reception which we traversed through on our trip to restaurant. It was nice to have doors opened for us as we passed through, And having names remembered is unusual in such a large establishment.

The main hotel building runs N to S, with a slight bias toward west. Meaning on one side (river side) you get morning sun, and vineyard side you get afternoon sun. The rooms we found a little 'sterile'. They were well presented and spotlessly clean. It is just that it was not a room where you 'felt at home'. Minimalist comes to mind.

King bed was comfy. But the horizontal surfaces for making a cuppa, pouring wine or whatever were behind a door that clashed with the bathroom door, which clashed with the main door. And the fridge was a 'space challenged' for a few drinks and nibbles we brought along with us for our 3 day stay.

Perhaps this is our biased perspective, as we are near local and we stayed as a break from minding grandkids. As such a comfy room was more important that trooping around doing the sightseeing thing.

We did get a healthy discount from being ACCOR plus members, and prices seemed to be further reduced due to low occupancy account of Covid.

We enjoyed the restaurant very much, and as with reception, we found the staff to be outstanding. The Muse restaurant was reviewed separately.

Feeling very relaxed and refreshed after 2 nights in a river view room. I'll start with my pros:

The most comfortable king sized bed I think I've ever slept in! Spacious room. Stunning grounds perfect for a morning stroll. Do not leave without going to the indigenous art gallery. It will take your breath away. A cellar door tasting is a must too. I'm kicking myself for not remembering names but a huge shout out to our host for our wine tasting and our beautiful tour guide in the gallery. Both were exceptionally knowledgeable and so warm and friendly. Reception staff were wonderful too.

Cons: As much as we loved our stay there's a few areas that could use some tweaking. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant once and 2 breakfasts and the food was well below the standard you would expect of a luxury hotel. The restaurant and cafe staff (not all of them) are inattentive particularly when it comes to drinks. We were a group who enjoys a drink and over the course of 2.5 hours were offered drinks only twice. Breakfast was below average with some dishes inedible. The bathrooms although beautiful to look at were frustrating. No bench space and poor lighting. I'm so sick of having to use my own hand mirror while perched near a window to put a bit of make-up on in luxury hotel suites. Hotel bathrooms seem to be aiming for style over function. The pool was quite sterile and overcrowded. It's also overlooked by the rooms with absolutely no privacy.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon to be greater with little fanfare! The lady asked us if we would prefer to settle in rather than receive our welcome wine and a brief tour. We felt that was a directive rather than an option and felt compelled to settle into our room. We never did get that wine either!! We went to the pool which was refreshing, but whilst lounging around the pool experienced a lot of interest from the resident wasp colony. Other guests complained to us about it too! On arrival at the restaurant for dinner we were seated outside which at first appeared lovely as the setting is most tranquil, but as it got darker outside we were unable to read the menus or see our food to eat it as there were no candles on the tables or overhead lighting. The table service was really disappointing too and when we went to pay after dinner at the front desk the Maître de took my payment and didn’t utter one word to us! He didn’t even ask if we liked our dinner. The food was unimpressive which was disappointing considering the setting we were in! They could do so much better with the dining experience. The bedrooms are nicely appointed and the beds are soft, but overall I was disappointed with our stay and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. They need to lift their game!!

My partner booked us for a two day trip to stay at the Mitchelton Hotel, as a surprise for my birthday. Firstly, I have to say that the cellar door and the muse restaurant were fantastic and the staff were very friendly. (Especially Kate — super knowledgeable & so nice!!)

However, it was disappointing to find out after our stay and checking instagram, we had been put in the accessible room (101). This would have been fine if they had’ve told us beforehand, but it feels as though we were ripped off and missed out on what the experience had to offer.

The bathroom had a completely open shower and what was clearly a disabled toilet. It seems as though an accessible room would have been better suited for someone else, other than two 20 year olds there for a weekend retreat. Surely there were other visitors this was better suited for?

Also this accessible room was directly in front of the main foyer and reception desk, so we were woken up early in the morning by staff working & other guests using the elevator. As two 20 year olds staying at a winery, we tasted our fair share of wines and being able to sleep in would have been appreciated.

I want to emphasise again that this would’ve been fine if the reception staff had informed us when checking in, however they didn’t mention anything at all, and thus we feel the stay was not what it could’ve been.

Additionally, the room had heating and a fan, but no air conditioning, it was stuffy and hot at night, and although I can appreciate the money spent on the clearly expensive bed linen it seemed as though it would have been better spent on air conditioning. also no hair dryer lol.

Hotel rather average was lucky to get a river view room as I could have stayed home and looked out on our own vines. They do hav a very nice bathroom with both bath and shower. But dinner and breakfast both had large faults. If you are only allowed 80 minutes to dine a per Covid law, then they need to speed up service because after 95 minutes we were still on mains so no desert for us . It had to be delivered to our room. If you were not staying in house there would be no dsert for you. We were lucky to be seated inside but felt sorry for both the outdoor dinners and staff when a cool change came through with wind and rain. Breakfast , tea was cold had to ask twice for sugar, I asked for 1 item to be removed from the dish it arrived still in the dish,my husband asked for no egg as he has an allergy to them but it was placed on the pass containing egg heard the waitress ask for it to be removed but it had been in contact with he other things in the roll. I know it is hard a the moment but there only a few people there at both meals ..Breakfast staff need to stop standing around talking to each other and do their job.PS you need a good carpet cleaner as there was a lot of marks on the carpet

A lovely boutique river frontage hotel surrounded by beautiful farmland and vineyards. We stayed in room overlooking the infinity pool and Goulburn River that was very relaxing. It’s nice to wonder around the extensive property admiring the wildlife and riverside views. The room was nice, and included everything you would expect of a Five star hotel. The only thing we found that let the experience down was the much dated restaurant ‘Muse’ at nighttime. It lacks complete ambiance and has a cold feel about it the moment you walk in. The tables are very dark with not even a candle in sight, including the outside tables. There are spotlights positioned around the room with some pointing at the ceiling and others right in your face. It wouldn’t be to difficult to fix the problem and to make it a welcoming intimate experience. It’s ok for breakfast and lunch where there is plenty of natural light, but get the lighting right at nighttime, and add some tablecloths to create a nice cosy ambiance. I feel if the management address this issue and can create the right mood, people would be wanting to come back. Other than that, the food and service was very good overall and we both enjoyed what we had to eat. The Aboriginal art gallery is amazing and definitely worth a look, including the views from the tower above.

Beautiful property. Still impressed by design - layout - landscaping etc. Rooms are very comfortable and well appointed with high quality fixtures and fittings as well as bedding and bathroom amenities.
The restaurant ,food /wine is very good. Bit of a problem with flies and service is very friendly if a bit patchy.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights using a Luxury Escapes package which included a full a la carte breakfast, wine tasting and a glass of wine upon arrival.

We enjoyed our stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. The view from the balcony was scenic. We had undercover parking for our car. The breakfast was good. Service was excellent.

The swimming pool was nice. I swam 50 laps on day 1, 60 laps on day 2 and 50 laps on day 3. Had the pool to myself as there were no other swimmers.

We saw a few kangaroos and an emu within the vineyard and plenty of sulphur crested cockatoos flying everywhere around the place. Also saw a few Black Swans and ducks swimming in the river next to the Hotel grounds.

This is a small good quality boutique hotel in the grounds of Mitchelton Winery and presents well but is expensive for what it is. The rooms were large and well fitted out but what you might expect for a better quality hotel. The pool was good. This hotel was rated more for its location.
