Detailed Reviews
Arranged for 15 french guests to stay at St Marys for the Wales France game.
We arrived on the friday earlier than planned, everyone was so helpful. after our excursion to the big pit we returned for drinks and Dinner.
David who was on duty was incredible ( Thank you)
They arranged for us to have a table set up to sit 17 people together ( myself and my wife as well as guests)
The service we received from Dave and Kirsty Made the evening.
The food was excellent
From the start with the booking and dealing with Alison right until the moment we left, no more could have been done to make our stay more welcoming.
Thank you very much.

We arrived and there was no one in reception, however there was a sign stating use the desk phone, however this didn’t work. We used the reception phone and 5 minutes later a mature man entered reception which startled our dog. The dog barked (he was on a short lead) and he said he said if “he’s going to be like that”. I explained that he had startled him.
The receptionist was friendly towards us but clearly doesn’t like dogs which he stated on a number of occasions. We felt guilty for bringing him and quite anxious throughout our stay. Later in the evening we called into the spike room and the same person said “I hope he’s not with you”. I explained that I had an email stating that we could bring our dog into the spike room. We had one quick drink as we didn’t feel welcome.
I recognise that not everybody likes dogs but if you state you are “dog friendly” then you should be so and customers shouldn’t feel anxious. It significantly spoilt our stay and we left early.
The room was comfortable, warm and a good size. We come to Bridgend on a frequent basis but we will not come here again.

I stopped here a few years ago. Revisited yesterday and was not disappointed. The staff were friendly, the food and service was good and reasonably priced. The
room was clean, large and had a comfortable double bed or two. There was also free wifi.
The only issue for some people would be the poor mobile phone signal.

Very disappointed with the condition of the course.
Tee boxes were in a poor condition, grass had not been cut and there were no tee markers .
Fairways also looked like they had not been cut for some time and the grass was long .
The greens were in a poor state and had also not been cut , some of them were in a poor state. The flag holes had not been edged and had grass growing into them.
The bunkers had not been edged and contained little or no sand , the ones that had some sand had not been raked . Thanks
I know that the course had only been open for 2 days to the public after lockdown but expected it to be in better shape .
If it had been £10 a round I would not have complained but pricing it at £22 for a morning tee time and £18 for a afternoon tee time I was expecting more . There is a pay and play course down the road that can be played and the most expensive tee time is £14.50 that would nick spots of this place .
Sad to say it will be a long time before I return.

We booked into this hotel as we were attending a wedding nearby, our booking was for 2 nights Friday and Saturday.
(This is a long review but strongly recommend you read before you book!)
We arrived just as it was getting dark on the Friday night and hotel visitors are directed to a back car park which was covered in mud probably dropped by golf trollies. The car park at the front with lovely views of the building and surrounding golf course is for golfers only. Not the best first impression but maybe a relfection on how the hotel treats it's guests.
The hotel reception is small, unfriendly, old decoration and rather sad. On arrival at the room the first thing that you notice is a terrible smell - very foisty and damp. The decor is old and looks like nothing has been changed for 20 or so years. The bathroom was dusty, the bath not clean, full of gold taps and the wood surrounding the wash basin was cracked with age and use. In the bedroom everything is brown including brown net curtains that were falling down at the large windows which overlooked the road to the back car park. We found later that the bed and pillow was extremely uncomfortable and temperature of the room too high and uncontrolable.
We made a reservation for dinner at reception - they though it best we did so - we arrived at 8.00pm to find we were the only diners apart from a large 60th birthday party. The Italian restaurant (which seems to have nothing Italian on the menu) is housed in a large glass conservatory extension where the carpet is worm and torn in places. Again the decor is out of date and dull - but maybe the food will be worth it!??
We were asked to go into the restaurant immediately but we said we would prefer to have a drink in the bar area. The waiting staff then forgot all about us and we did find staff and asked for menus they bought pudding menus and disappeared. We found the correct menus oursleves.
It is clear that the waiting staff are not trained and they have very little knowledge of procedure, service and food on the menu. Each time something was bought to the table we were greeted with 'here you go!' Our starter was OK. The main course was terrible - one of the dishes was cold and the sauce congealed, no waiting staff came back to the table so one of us left the 'italian' restaurant and went back to the bar to find all the waiting staff and the 'manager' at the bar chatting. They replaced the meal by warming the lamb so was now over cooked, and producing another sauce which was tasteless - they offered new vegetables and bought the wrong replacement dish. We ordered wine and had to remind them, when bought to the table and poured it into a glass - no tasting or even showing us the bottle was what had been ordered. We ordered bread with our starter (charged item) they then brought extra bread rolls, which looked like burgers buns, with our main course which we sent away.
It was clear that we did not enjoy the experience - the restaurant manager (wearing the red shirt) did ask us what we thought of the meal, he said he knew about the main course being returned, so did not want to discuss what was wrong. He was told that we had not enjoyed the experience at all and he had no apology nor did he want to understand what was wrong. The waiting staff did ask if everthing was alright at the end of the meal but it obvious that they have no training and do not know what to do when a customer says no.
Additionally to bad service, very poorly cooked food the atmosphere and decor is cold and unfriendly.
The restaurant manager knew we were unhappy but did not offer any explaination or even a complimentary cup of coffee!! Not that we would have wanted to try the coffee at this point.
We decided to find another hotel in the area and booked out the following morning. We would have taken our experience further but we found reception was closed, so left a message with the restuarant manager that we were booking out the following morning. We did try breakfast which again was a mistake - no one had heard of herbal or fruit tea - cooked breakfast was cold in parts and overcooked, some items on the plate had not been ordered, coffee was available in a heated jug had obviously been brewing for hours.
As our wedding was at noon we did not have time in the morning to ask to see the management but intend on writing to them directly. The staff attitude was extremely disappointing the only friendly member of staff was the young lady who served us breakfast - at least she tried - but again had no training.
Overall, old tried decor, foisty & damp smelling bedroom, dusty bathroom, poorly cooked food, dull atmosphere and very bad service!! Extremely disappointing and stressful experience.

I stay here regularly on business trips and the hotel is nice. Very clean with everything you need. The staff are lovely and helpful.
The best part of this hotel is the restaurant, some of the best meals I’ve ever had have been courtesy of the chef at St Mary’s. Would highly recommend a meal here.
My only issue with this hotel is, as I mentioned, I have to stay here for business regularly and the WiFi is dreadful. When it does actually work, it’s slower than a tortoise running in treacle and rarely works for more than a few minutes. I realise you don’t stay at hotels simply to go online but it really makes working, browsing and watching any kind of online streaming very difficult. The hotel, with being a golf course too, is quite out of the way from any kind of civilisation so I tend to stay there and just try to watch Netflix or something.
Please improve.
Other than that, it’s a great hotel and I would highly recommend.

Its average to be honest. Looks nice from outside. But a bit worn down. Room smelt when we walked in. Wifi is terrible and unreliable (this day an age its a must and there should be no excuses). It was clean enough, and cooked breakfast was good. was it worth the money for one night. Not really.

From the initial booking of the MHGC Seniors three day golf break with the Receptionist through to the last day, the St Mary's staff were all fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble.
The breakfasts were very good but the set evening meals were of an exceptional standard.
The rooms were very comfortable and very clean.
The pro shop staff were very obliging and the golf course was challenging but totally enjoyable and very easy to walk. Unfortunately the weather was showery and parts of the course were a bit wet which is understandable in September.
This is a fantastic venue for a golf break and excellent value.
Well done St Mary's. :-)

My daughter got married at St Donats Castle on Sunday 11th June and we booked rooms for approximately 30 guests to stay after the celebrations. When we arrived there was no one to book us in so some of the guests had to go and look for a member of staff. To be fair the rooms were lovely but they were the only good thing about our stay.My daughter had arranged with the manager for the bar to stay open and serve alcohol, he was not on duty and they would only serve soft drinks. The following morning we went to breakfast only to find that they had run out of toast, mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding, and most of the continental breakfast options,as we had booked most if not all the rooms I think this was appalling. There was no explanation or apology and it certainly took some of the pleasure out of a wonderful day.
I would not recommend any one to stay here unless they had to.

No, but Physique Gym in Brackla, about 5 miles away does guest passes. If you want a gym on site you may be better booking the Heronston Hotel or Coed-Y-Mwstwr Hotel, both in Bridgend, or for even better facilities, the Vale Resort near Llantrisant.
