Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa is often celebrated for its charming atmosphere and stunning lake views, with guests particularly fond of the picturesque location. However, while the hotel's cleanliness and well-kept grounds receive positive remarks, some guests feel the value is compromised by overpriced offerings and dated decor. The spa and views are highlights, yet the spa's size and restaurant service have room for improvement. Accommodations boast beautiful vistas, although the dated aesthetic calls for refreshment. Service quality varies, with instances of commendable staff attentiveness contrasted by disorganized moments.

We booked the Spa Renew Day package for £90 which gives you afternoon tea, a 25 minute treatment, 2 hours use of the thermal suite and the mud experience. If you were to book each of those separately it would cost £152.50 so £90 felt like a bargain to us. We managed to book this as a last minute treat a few days before and despite reading the mixed reviews about the spa, we wanted to give it a go mostly because of the location which was absolutely stunning and we didn't find another spa with quite such amazing views.

The customer service both through booking via email and while we were on location was exceptional. Staff were friendly, fast and attentive to our needs and we could not fault them one bit. The one blip we had was when Jess had greeted us in the restaurant and remembered from our booking that one of the afternoon teas were not to include fish but when it arrived we had a salmon sandwich however they were quick to rectify and it was not a problem at all for us or them.

We visited on a Thursday afternoon during school term so it was nice and quiet though by no means empty. Parking was easy with lots of options and areas to choose from. We could see where the spa was right away and went in the other direction to the restaurant for our afternoon tea. The decor was really quirky and made us feel as though we'd travelled back in time to a grand old luxury hotel, lots of art for sale on the walls too which is great to see them supporting artists. Jess greeted us and provided us with great service throughout. We added a Calamari to our afternoon tea as it is our favourite and would recommend this if you are visiting.

Our drinks were first to come out quickly followed by the calamari then afternoon tea. We would have liked the drinks to arrive at the same time as our afternoon tea and not before if we were to come again. I ordered coffee and my brother ordered tea - while he was given a pot of tea which allowed him 3 cups, I was given only one cup of coffee, no small cafetiere which would have been nice. We did ask for water and was given a lovely icy cold big jug which was well needed after our walk. The coffee was delicious and there was a good selection of teas offered.

The afternoon tea was amazing, one of the best I've had and I do often choose an afternoon tea when I'm out for food. The sandwiches were filled with ham and mustard (the only problem we had with the afternoon tea was this sandwich - it had way too much mustard that we could not finish the small finger sandwich because it was so overpowering), cheese and pickle, salmon and cream cheese and we couldn't tell the last it looked like perhaps coronation chicken but the flavour was so subtle we doubted that guess. The scones were warm and there was plenty of clotted cream and a small pot of jam.
The cake plate was absolutely a joy to see and explore all the flavours. We loved how small the cakes were so that we could taste so many delicious flavours. There were 2 mini cheesecakes (I had chocolate and lemon and my brother had lemon and butterscotch or maybe caramel), Victoria sponge (so moist and light), chocolate brownie (very rich and yummy), lemon tart (this was both of our favourites), carrot cake (again so light and moist with the perfect amount of cream cheese on top) and on top were 2 half strawberries and 2 chocolate swirls. We were do delighted with the afternoon and would highly recommend this to anyone visiting - we would come back just for the afternoon tea.

We then went over to the spa where the staff were waiting for us to check in. It was a lovely small and intimate spa which I think may be what makes it the "luxury spa" they have called themselves. We were provided with robe (these are quite small so if you are a bigger size like me they will not feel very luxury), flipflops (take your own if you can as these are so uncomfortable), towel (again small and did not cover much of me as a plus size female) and a locker key and guided to the dim lighted, scented lounge room to wait for our treatments. I had the foot and leg treatment while my brother had the shoulder, neck and head treatment. Both of which were fantastic though would have liked to choose when we have the treatment - it is likely because we booked last minute that we were not offered a choice. The uncomfortable flip flops diminished the feeling of the lovely foot and leg treatment which was sad to see.

We made our way to the thermal suite which as I've said is a small space but they limit the number of people who can use and when we were there, only 2 other couples used the space and at the end we were the only ones in there for the last half hour. There is one sauna which smelled lovely and one steam room which was unbearable hot for me but I do prefer a sauna so is likely just preference. There was an ice chip sink which we used following visits to the sauna and steam room to refresh and cool down. On each side of the ice chips was the experience shower. On one side was a lovely cooling mist and the other side had the shower which had a button for cold and one for hot. The cold was too cold for me but great after the heat of the sauna or steam room. The Jacuzzi was very powerful and the view from the jacuzzi looked right out on the lake which was what drew us to the spa.

There is a little balcony outside the spa where 2 loungers and 2 seats were but no cushions. I went to find staff to ask if we could have cushions, they said we could take from the indoor loungers but did not offer to do this themselves, we were expected to rearrange the for them. It would have been nice to have staff on hand to do this and to speak to but I had to leave the spa and go to the reception to ask. As it was only a small spa it wasn't a big issue but it could be the difference in making it feel more of a luxury spa.

The other way it may feel more of a luxury spa is if the mud treatment was attended by one of the staff members. You can pay £40 for an individual treatment or 2 people for £60 and you are given instructions and the mud and left to it. Since there are 3 different muds and an exfoliation scrub you need to clean hands between applications and the wet hands means the mud slips off instead of sticking to the skin. Flannels could be provided and advice to dry off before applying would be helpful but for a luxury spa I would expect more focus and attention from the staff not being left to it. For £40/60 I would have liked to see the staff apply the mud instead of being left to apply myself. It is no more intimate than having a massage - even being given the option to apply yourself or have a staff member would have been nice. Once the mud is applied you are then in a small steam room which is so hot we could not stay in long enough to have the shower at the end (after 25 minutes, a shower comes down from the ceiling while you are seated to wash the mud off). We used the shower just outside instead.

Following the visit to the spa, we decided to have a coffee before leaving. We saw that the tavern was open and thought we would try this rather than the restaurant which we had the afternoon tea in. Despite it not being busy at all, one person was being served in the other side of the tavern, we were ignored completely. The bar person walked past us twice without acknowledging us at all, we would have happily waited if he had just said hi and told us he would be with us but we felt this was quite rude of him and did not want out lovely day spoiled by this part of the hotel. We chose to go back to the restaurant and have our coffee and enjoyed the scenery on the balcony again.

Despite the few cons I have mentioned it is a worthwhile visit and good value for money if you use one of the packages. I hope management can consider the few concerns I have raised and address for future visitors to the spa. Thank you to all the staff that made our visit special for my brothers first spa experience on his birthday.

The best part of the trip was the view from the premier lake view room, stunning! The room however not so stunning just very so so nothing amazing. The four poster bed was battered and noisy which creaked with every movement and the robes thin and uncomfortable. The housekeepers were lovely and friendly however there was ash in one glass and a cigarette butt on the balcony. They were also a bit too keen to get in your room to clean. The cooked breakfast served to the room was one of the worst breakfasts I’ve had at a hotel. Cold toast a tiny pot of beans a rubber fried egg 1 cheap pork sausage and 1 vegetarian sausage a tiny mushy and bacon like cardboard, very very disappointing. Continental breakfast the 2nd morning a little better but nothing to rave about. The iron on room 33 also needs replacing as the flex has perished and copper wire exposed. Sunday we wanted a big walk around the lake to build up an apatite for a Sunday dinner but that stops at 2pm!!!! I called up at 2:10 to ask the kitchen if there was any chance of putting a dinner up and told they had run out of dinners so again very disappointing. Most of the staff were grit and polite, I say most as I found a few a bit strange and unhelpful. Asking for a specific table for dinner service in the fine dinning restaurant to be told it’s first come first served by one I helpful lady when the restaurant didn’t open until 6:30 and there was about 3 couples waiting in the bar so I didn’t understand what the problem was. I asked an older member of staff and she happily said yes and sorted it out, thank you. The building is grand and very nice the location next to the lake is it’s pulling in point but take it away and it’s just ok. The spa was small but lucky for us we had it to ourselves for an hour but any more than 4 people in there it would be crowded. Wouldn’t go back but wouldn’t advise not to go it is a lovely place but just failed us on little things that do add up and all in all the 2 nights cost me £480 so a little disappointing.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us. Although I was pleased to read that you enjoyed the hotel's excellent location, I was sorry to learn that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, for which I apologise. I have passed your comments about breakfast onto our head chef to avoid a repeat of this below par performance. I do apologise that you were unable to have lunch with us, it is only our main restaurant that we serve until 2pm, we do serve food in our brasserie until 3pm and then we start afternoon tea from 3pm in our lounges so food is available throughout the day, I'm sorry if you misunderstood this and felt no food was available to you. It is naturally disappointing you feel the hotel did not meet your expectations and you have not enjoyed the same level of stay many of our guests enjoy. Your review will be shared with the team and we thank you again for your comments. Kind regards, J Thomas Guest Relations Manager

We spent four nights at this hotel as part of a much needed break visiting different parts of Mid and North Wales. Generally everything was fine. Clean and good size room with lake view balcony, large bathroom, plenty of storage space and even a handy iron with board and fridge in the room. Public areas were also comfortable with that 'oldie' world feel and look you'd expect from a country hotel. The restaurant area was a bit of a let down as it seemed 'out of place' with the rest of the hotel and almost resembled a works canteen with one of the best views in Powys. Not even a table cloth on the table. When paying approx £110 for three courses and a bottle of wine a nice white cover would have been a nice touch. Just a minor 'niggle' and I'm sure many guests would not be concerned.
It was the restaurant that proved to be a major disappointment. As others have mentioned the dinner choice was very limited but sufficient for a short stay. The quality of the food was not up to the standard you'd expect from a hotel of this type. We'd stopped in a similar hotel in Builth Wells on the evening before our arrival and the food was of a much higher standard and the restaurant ambience was top class.
Service at dinner was generally good. Staff were friendly and polite but we did have to ask for missing cutlery on two occasions.
You are presented with an excellent choice at breakfast but sadly many of the items in the hot menu were overcooked for our taste. Nevertheless edible and might be fine for other guests. On one occasion my wife ordered a poached egg and was served with something resembling a boiled egg that had had a fork run over it. Yolk was rock hard and gave the impression it had been standing a while.
The majority of staff are polite and friendly. However when having a drink in the bar one evening we overheard a senior member of staff complaining that a guest, who we had witnessed him being polite and accommodating to minutes earlier, was complicated and difficult. Not the type of behaviour you'd expect from someone in a senior position and certainly doesn't set an example for junior staff. It is not the done thing in a public area. Perhaps the staff are under pressure because of Covid restrictions etc. but still not acceptable.
On the question of Covid the hotel appears to be well organized. Temperature checks on arrival, social distancing measures in all areas, mask wearing, hand sanitizers and housekeeping restrictions. It is still possible to have room service if you prefer not to eat with others in the restaurant. We felt generally safe all the time we were there.
Our visit was, in many ways, a tale of two halves. We would visit again but after the Covid crisis is completely over because I suspect that many of the negatives we encountered may have a direct link to the circumstances we find ourselves in.
The view from our room was outstanding.

Having stayed at a nearby hotel with no problems in Wales for 2 nights, we were looking forward to our stay overlooking the lake

We checked in with having our temperature checked on the wall, only to find that the Perspex screen at reception covered a small section, and the staff simply walked to eh other side to talk to you! Making a mockery of the safety aspect!

We all met in the bar before dinner, to be told that there is ludicrous rule that stops vertical drinking, yet nowhere on the Welsh government website regarding the COVID regulations is this mentioned. We can only presume it was made up on the night to make us stop congregating at the bar. Why they simply didn't ask us to sit down, I don't know.

Then to make matters worse, people were taken into dinner on their own, and my brother who had travelled specially to celebrate my upcoming 50th birthday was made to eat on his own!

When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told it was law to not allow more than 2 households to eat together, but we could all drink in the bar together! I pointed out that this was not mentioned to me when I spoke to the hotel to make the room bookings or by email when the rate was confirmed (the fact they gave me wrong figures didn't instil confidence!). I wasn't offered any work around, like suggesting we had 2 tables for 2 set up so we could at least see and speak to each other at the required 2 metre distance.

They were perfectly happy for us all (30) of us to sit together in the drawing room all evening after dinner!

The next morning, we were all allowed to sit on the same table for breakfast and I asked to book a table for 4 that evening for dinner with no issue.

Then the final morning the general manager (we presume it was him) quizzed us on our relationships and if we were from the same household. When we pointed out we had not had an issue the previous 2 days, he simply said, "Oh my staff have got to know you and I didn't know you."

It seems that the riles are changed at the whim of management ion a daily basis and no consistent approach, makes it very difficult for paying guests to understand what they can do.

The one shining light was 2 members of staff, the barman that had been there a while who made us feel welcome and suggested various things we could do while we were there, and Ian the waiter at breakfast, who went above and beyond to find a railway we could travel on that day, something the hotel receptionists was incapable of offering as she simply looked blankly at me when I asked her wat was good to visit in the area.

Overall, I wouldn't return to that particular hotel, but I would come back to eh area, as the rest of the stay was wonderful, and the other places were brilliant.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us. We take our Covid policy very seriously along with the health and safety of our staff and guests and we are fortunate enough that most of our guests respect and understand this. I apologise that a 'work around' was not offered, however due to your aggressive outburst I didn't feel that any solution I could offer would be acceptable. Please see below Welsh Covid rules regarding dining for your perusal - You are able to eat or drink outdoors with people outside your household or extended household, as long as you maintain physical distancing from them and the size of the group does not exceed 30 people. Indoors, you are only able to eat or drink with the people you live with (members of your own household) or members of your extended household if you have agreed to form one. My husband and I stayed here 11 - 14 February 2020. This was our sixth visit to the hotel so we knew what to expect. However, on arriving at our room we were quite disappointed in the standard of the fixtures and fittings. In the bathroom the toilet’s cistern lid was resting separately on a shelf. We thought this had been an oversight by housekeeping but no. When we put the cistern lid back where it belonged the toilet seat was unable to be put up for a stand up pee. Our bedroom carpet was threadbare, the bed was hard and some of the furniture was so old and broken down it was almost unusable. The breakfast was not that good. My full Welsh was overcooked and my egg was cold (though the plate was very hot), my husband had haddock and poached egg and it consisted of a white piece of fish and white eggs – not appetising to look at and the fish was dry and unappealing. On a happier note the staff were all pleasant and polite and we have nothing bad to say about them.

Booked for 3 nights for my partner's birthday. The first room offered had a fence and an unkempt area of the garden outside the window. The coffee table was covered in heat rings and the valance trim on the bed was the wrong size and only hung over one side of the bed base. It was also very dark. We asked if there were any other rooms available and were offered a superior lakeside room for an additional 20 pounds a night. No problem paying extra for a better room but it wasn't it was very dated and the double glazing misted which obscured the view. We settled on a small double room which was better than the others but only had a small bed, as we are tall, this ruined our stay. The full Welsh breakfast was disappointing but the rest of the breakfast provided was very nice. The room was clean and the staff friendly but we doubt we'll be back because of the rooms.

Arrived at the Hotel with easy parking & quick check-in, there was plenty of hand sanitizer at the entrance to reception & temperature scanner which gave us a sense of security.

Staff was really polite & friendly from the reception, bar & restaurant, we had a 2 night stay & will say that we had a wonderful time staying here, the room was small but clean & tidy with en-suite bathroom also spotless.

We stayed in room 18 that overlooked the lake & the views were out of this world (second to none) if only we had the weather but this didn't stop us from doing what we wanted.

Food was very nice from breakfast to evening meal & nothing was to much trouble if you needed anything, there was always someone close at hand.

Would recommend this place if you want to have a lovely walk around the lake & get away from it all & I would definitely book this place again.

Just returned from 4 night stay at this hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.We stayed in a Lake View room with a balcony with our German Shorthaired Pointer Cariad.Yes the rooms are slightly dated but that goes with the hotel. The beds very comfortable plenty of hot water for showering and bathing very quiet and plenty of room the hospitality tray was excellent with fresh coffee included.
Staff were all friendly and very helpful couldn't fault them. Breakfast was our favourite meal all served to you by mask wearing staff the choice was excellent and freshly cooked the Welsh breakfast was a treat with excellent quality food. Evening meal was fine except not a lot of choice but the tapas was a nice addition if you did not want a large meal. All in all a very nice break my partner went on the lake paddle boarding which was enjoyable we also went walking it was quite busy on the weekend but it was bank holiday weekend. The management of the hotel is very well run with the main man seen on numerous occasions checking areas and making sure everything was ship shape well done Lake Vrynwy Hotel and Spa for keeping us safe in these times of COVID and giving us a safe enjoyable break which was so needed Thank You

Booked this last min as a getaway after a week from hell to have a night off.
We were greeted by a receptionist who's main interest was to get two signatures on a registration card not how are you or welcome to lake Vyrnwy.
Made me feel like a school kid in the dog box.

Having paid top dollar for the best room in the hotel we lugged our suitcases up to the room only to find a very dated room to be our abode for the night .
No issues about being dated but mould in the shower single pillows on the bed and a roll top bath with previous guest corks still floating underneath not a great start .

We ventured down to the bar for a drink and the same dated feeling was reflected but that shouldn't hinder service , however my gin and tonic was served Luke warm in a very cheap nasty glass .
Not what you expect from a so called 4 star establishment.

The wine list was mediocre and all the reasonably priced wine was out of stock.

On reflection of this I looked a few wines up and in general the wine price was way above the norm £42 for a £10 bottle of wine cost is just ludicrous.
The service in general is done by European workers who in general were friendly but lack communication skills in English.
When the question was asked is it homemade it could not be answered as she didn't now what homemade meant.

The evening dinner was a disaster not to be relived.
I can't understand why some off the back tables had table cloths on but the front one's nothing it felt like a breakfast room which it was the next morning, not a upmarket restaurant.

Having been back and forth to choose a wine was one issue.
Food arrived starters okay and edible presentation okay nothing worth a rosette star which we sat next too.
The mains was terrible rubber pork belly and tiny portion of pheasant overcooked .
Whatever reheating process was used made the food just unpleasant. It definitely wasn't fresh.
Throughout the whole experience no one seemed to bother or check if it was okay .

Odly enough in the reflection off the glass window you could see all the staff standing by the kitchen door on their phones which summed it all up.

Dessert was terrible tasteless homemade ice cream and old chocolate tart.

Breakfast the next morning was the same disaster cold beans , some concoction of scrambled eggs etc.

Having spend nearly £300 on a night out that's memorable for the wrong reasons we will never return .
To add salt to the wounds it would have been cheaper to just book the room
On booking .com rather then go direct .
Never again .

Having just returned from a one night stay at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa, I feel recognition is due to the wonderful customer service from all the staff here.

Firstly, the reception staff were extremely helpful in letting me use the phone on arrival and reunite me with my handbag (that I'd left in a service station on route - thankyou!!).

Secondly, Ian, the manager, responded with understanding and professionalism when I raised some issues with our room - I really felt that our feedback and experience mattered and was dealt with appropriately - thankyou.

Finally, the waitresses in the Tower restaurant provided faultless service and it was a real treat to hear them singing a Romanian celebration song to a group of guests at dinner.

Despite a few niggles with the room, the hotel has the most wonderful, warm and traditional ambience and incredible views. The food served in the Tower was divine (and great vegan options). Also, I highly recommend trying the delicious marmalade at breakfast that is made on site. So delicious they event sell jars it!

The staff here, every one of them, are an absolute credit to the establishment.

As is the case in many places these days, the dress code for the dinner service was mixed. Some people were dressed quite smartly, but most were just smart-casual.
