Detailed Reviews
We have just returned from our second visit and it did not disappoint in any way at all.
The hospitality received is absolutely top notch and the comfort and quality of the accommodation is second to none. We stayed in Madocks, which has the most stunning views over the estuary one side and the beautiful gardens on both aspects.
Everything in the room was absolutely spotless, with high quality bedding, towels and toiletries, everything is catered for and it really shows.
The Welsh breakfast is a must when staying, with top quality local ingredients used, so delicious and beautifully presented in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Mark and Howard are the most professional hosts, friendly, helpful and so obviously putting their guests first all the time, it was an absolute pleasure to be back in their beautiful home again in this stunning part of North Wales, and we will certainly be returning in the near future, we both felt totally relaxed after our 3 day stay.
A big thanks to Mark and Howard for looking after us so well.😊

Dear Sally, Just to say WOW! Thank you for leaving us such a great review and top marks here on Tripadvisor. We are so happy that you both had such a fantastic and relaxing 3 night stay in Madocks. It was lovely to see you both again and welcome you back to The Plas! Thanks also for highlighting the dual aspect and views from the William Madocks room - Glad that the breakfast went down well too! Both Mark and I very much look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future! Best wishes Howard & Mark.

A wonderful welcome to a wonderful house and home. Thank you, Mark and Howard, for a lovely stay. As proprietors you do give very personal service. The afternoon cream tea was delightful; Mark served this (probably prepared it too) in the superb drawing room, and made us feel very much at home by staying to chat. Every piece of furniture, picture, ornament has been chosen with exquisite taste. We learned about the eighteenth century owner, Maddocks. He built the embankment called 'The Cob'; thus securing a large area from intrusion by the Irish sea, and creating the port of Porthmadog. Our room (Shelley, the poet) was spacious and well equipped, as was the ensuite bathroom. Breakfast was wonderful, again served by Mark, though we also said hello to Howard, think that he was on chef duty; making a perfect Welsh breakfast. Bear in mind you will need to go out for dinner; Mark arranged that, as well as the taxi (don't think about walking); his choice the Sgwar in Tremadog is brilliant (but busy, you may have to settle for the Union Inn). You will be lucky to get a room at Plas Tan Yr Allt this summer, we picked up a cancellation , but there are only 3 bedrooms; well worth looking at their website; Mark and Howard give a generous discount when you book direct.

This was an amazing find!. Mark and Howard have done a fantastic job. Spotlessly clean and full of character. We stayed in Shelley's Theatre. Exposed beams and a lovely four poster bed. Lots of space , a large spacious bathroom and a great shower over the bath!. Lots of thoughtful extras as well as a quiet fridge to cool the champagne! A view over the well tended formal garden ( performing squirrels ...no charge!)and although the weather was changeable ( November in Wales, what else!) It was really something.
Howard's breakfasts were very ample full of flavour and prepared with evident care whilst Mark's front of house skills were a masterclass.
This is a highly recommended luxury B & B in a great location run by owners who know their stuff and carry it off with seemingly effortless aplomb.
It was our first real tour of North Wales and the weather was pretty kind overall but whatever the weather a good holiday break can only be built on your accommodation choice and this time we are feeling rather smug!.
Finally , this is a top value venue at any price but do yourself a favour and book online directly with the boys!

We spent two nights at this place . Having read the reviews we were looking forward to our stay here . What a disappointment . We had a long journey to get to the premises and we’re met with a very lukewarm welcome. We were not even offered a refreshment or cup of tea .
The owner dressed in crocks seemed keen to get us into our room, showing us the room
For breakfast and pointed to a closed door which was a place the residents can use.
We were not given the room we had paid £180 a night for and we’re told it was double booked . We were therefor given a smaller room with a smaller bed and this, with no genuine apology and some arrogance when shown the email confirming our room
The room had very sparse comforts , lots of old furniture but the sweetener dispenser had only one capsule which demonstrates where the priorities are . A small cheap bush tv in the wall was not what was expected from a 5 star place with all the awards they seem to highlight !
This is a nice building in a very lovely location but we felt quite unwanted throughout our stay as communication was very lacking . It was almost like we were an inconvenience as we stayed in their premises which wasn’t nice .
We were not even given any information on our arrival and there were no brochures or information in the room . Any requests for additional items such as sugar etc would have to be requested via IT eg FB messenger etc . This was the procedures that were required by the owners who seemed to use Covid as an excuse to avoid contact .
The breakfast was very average with cheap ingredients and paper napkins and the this premises was more like a museum. Awards were overtly placed for viewing and it is very clear that the owners seemed to have rested in the laurels . If they won the awards before , they would be struggling to do so now as the service provision was really terrible and impersonal.
This place is definitely not 5 star. After we checked out we contact on mobile to tell us we hadn’t paid?when we had we were also told that we had taken the used bathroom slippers which should be returned which was such a suprise ! We have always taken cheap bathroom slippers home from
hotel stays and it was so embarrassing handing them back !
It was such a shame as we were looking forward to our stay but it was all so very disappointing . This is an example where the owners seem to think they can rest on their laurels and awards are everything and the residents needs are inconvenient.
I couldn’t believe it when I asked to speak to the both the owners to provided them some helpful
feedback , such as ways to improve communications etc , one owner said his partner was too busy , I asked him to sit so we could have a discussion and he refused saying he wanted to stand ? After trying to provide the feedback it was clear the owner seems to dismiss what I was saying and he eventually asked me to leave ? This demonstrates the arrogance of the owner who clearly has no interest in improving areas and they are much needed now . Such a shame …..

We have just completed a three night stay in the Madocks room, what can we say, absolutely fantastic! Mark and Howard were fantastic hosts and the service we received was impeccable. The hotel itself is outstanding in its location, decor and atmosphere.
The Madocks room was immaculate, with every thought going into the guest's comfort, with a fridge, Dolce Gusto coffee machine, king size four poster bed, a fantastic bathroom and the most amazing views of the gardens and Porthmadog estuary.
The breakfast choice was amazing including, eggs royale or benedict and a full Welsh breakfast also a vegetarian version, so tasty and just right to set you up for a day in Snowdonia.
The Hotels location in Tremadog allows quick and easy access to Snowdonia, only 20 mins from Beddgelert and 40 mins from either Llanberis or Zipworld in Bethesda.
We will definitely be returning in the near future.

A warm welcome from Mark who showed us to our room for two nights, the William Madocks room. A lovely big room with a large en-suite bathroom & a big four poster bed, which was really comfortable. The room had double aspect views of the garden & hills beyond. We had a lovely afternoon tea in the drawing room.
A peaceful nights sleep, with just the delightful sound of a hooting owl.
Breakfast was served in the dining room, a nice selection of cereals & fresh juices followed by a choice of freshly cooked breakfast items cooked to order. (A nice addition to breakfast items would be fresh fruit (blueberries, pineapple, strawberries etc) & croissants to make it really special.)
A ten minute walk from the hotel to the village centre, which has two pubs & a lovely restaurant, & does involve walking part of the way on a main road with no pavement, so not ideal in the dark but we managed it OK with a phone torch. There is a taxi option. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Such a treat to find such a lovely hotel, which has been furnished tastefully & in keeping with it’s wonderful history, in a beautiful setting. Understated luxury.

Dear Sue H, Wow what a fab review and top marks - thank you! We are delighted that you both had such a wonderful 2 night stay and took advantage of our heavily discounted 'Winter Offer'. Glad that you enjoyed the complimentary afternoon tea and 'cooked' breakfast (we were going to do just a continental selection for Groupon guests). We already do a scrummy homemade seasonal berry compote (with blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants etc) which guests rave about. We might add this as a paid supplement along with our other breakfast specialties to the 'Winter Offer' menu in the future. Thanks for highlighting the quick 10 minute walk into the village. We find about 90% of our guests stroll down to the restaurant and pubs during the spring / summer months when it's lighter. During the winter months when its darker most drive down (2 minutes away) or take one of our friendly local taxi's which charge only £1:50 - £2 per person each way. We also provide lots of torches for guests wanting to walk by the front door! Thanks also for mentioning our decor which is very much in the Regency style of the property and our beautiful setting. Best wishes, Howard & Mark.

It was our first stay at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt as a surprise birthday break. The hosts were absolutely first class and extremely tentative. The attention to detail concerning the precautions for the Coronavirus was exceptional and helped to give a sense of security during the stay.
We loved everything about the place, the house itself and its fantastic history, the decor and furnishings, the garden, the bedroom and not forgetting the wonderful view over the Glaslyn Estuary.
From the moment we arrived and had afternoon tea, sat on the veranda, we were able to relax and enjoy a special weekend with the added benefit of sunshine every day, which really put the icing on the cake.
Breakfast was excellent and helped to set us up each day for exploring the area around Porthmadog and some lovely spots on the Llyn Peninsula.
Thank you Howard and Mark for a memorable weekend. We will certainly recommend you to our friends and we hope that it will not be too long before we are able to return and enjoy your wonderful hospitality again.

Quite tricky negotiating the steep driveway, but so worth it. Mark and Howard have done an amazing job restoring this property. Very friendly and could not do enough for us. The breakfast is amazing, the bed in our room was fabulous and incredibly comfortable. In addition there were snacks and small bottles of wine in the room and a couple of bottles of water in the fridge. Cannot recommend this place enough, it's perfect.
