Nestling in Snowdonia National Park is Dolmelynllyn, a Victorian Gothic hotel with over 1000 years of history. With the mountain biking and walking trails of Coed-y-Brenin on our doorstep and surrounded by several waterfalls, gold and copper mines that nestle within the surrounding forest. A warm and relaxed hotel in which to unwind and with some of the purest air in Europe! We do accept well behaved insured dogs in some rooms but will make an additional charge if you try to check into the hotel with your dog without contacting us first, as we would not be ready for them.

We came to Snowdonia for some walking and stayed for three nights in the top floor Arram Family suite. (Double + twin room). The weather was unfortunately pretty bad so we didn’t venture far afield for our walks, but there were plenty of good short and long walks right outside the hotel door. It’s set right next to some a National Trust woodland so the setting is beautiful and wonderfully peaceful.
The hotel itself is in a striking gothic style country house. It is a little frayed at the edges in places, but it was comfortable, the breakfast was good and the owners(?) were extremely friendly and helpful. I don’t particularly like anonymous chain hotels so I liked its quirkiness and thought it was good value for money. The restaurant (which had a reduced ‘Covid menu’ was seriously limited for vegetarians/pescatarians (unless you you like pizza - which I don’t!), but the menu looked great if you like meat! The owners were so helpful that I suspect that if I’d given them advance warning they would have provided some non-meat alternatives, so I would suggest asking. Dolgellau is only a few miles away so there are plenty of eating possibilities within easy driving distance.

Lovely old hotel situated in wonderful countryside. The owner Alan and his staff were very friendly and accommodating, providing a wealth of local information and excellent food, all dietary needs catered for.
Brilliant forestry walks from the hotel with amazing waterfalls a few minutes away.

First visit to North Wales and struggled to get accommodation. We changed a date and managed to secure this little beauty for three nights. First impressions is 'WOW', a lovely old manor in beautiful settings. Everything was basic in the hotel, room was comfortable but no pressure on the shower! Restaurant was closed so ate out everyday but breakfast was plentiful with great service. The staff really bring this hotel to light, really knowledgeable and friendly which makes for a perfect weekend.
The hotel is a little tired and having been shut up for so long you could smell the damp but we would not hesitate in returning as it served us well. Thanks to Alan, his son and all the staff.

This is an old Welsh house, slightly gone to seed, but comfortable if a bit quirky. It gets a big plus for breakfast and a bigger one for the mountain garden that surrounds it. We thought the sound of a waterfall was rain! It had rained in the night but the walk to much bigger waterfalls was lovely, if a bit rock strewn here and there. Dinner is basic in these covid times. Rooms are nice and there are lots of books to borrow, but the scenery stole the show.

Beautiful location and a lovely old dowager of a property, with an interesting history file. Yes, it is a little tired in places but it’s very clean and well prepared for the covid holiday season, including a menu ‘a la covid 2020,’ proudly displayed in the hallway.
Breakfast was very well done and the sausages were amazingly good, as were the selection of pizzas, served up by the lovely Gaynor in the early evening. The staff are delightful and Alan goes out of his way to offer friendly advice and assistance to his guests. It’s a hotel for the price of a B&B, so keep that in mind and enjoy the experience, including the swarm of rare black bees in the walls around the Eden room. These creatures are safely contained and their honey is almost as good as those sausages from Dai the butchers in Bala.
We had some amazing drives into Barmouth, Betwsy-coed, Harlech, Portmeirion, the stunning Llanberis Pass and Horseshoe Pass. But forget all those scenic views and the hordes of masked hikers in woolly socks; those sausages were just amazing......

Superb location, ideally situated for the best walks in the area. Food was great, both breakfast and the evening meal. The home made yogurts with breakfast and the speciality butters with the evening meal were real treat. . Room was great with a beautiful view from each of the windows - appropriately decorated and furnished in keeping with the building. Bathroom appeared new and had a spa bath. The hall has an abundance of history attached to it. Alan is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful with his tips for walks, even providing maps and where to head for to miss the rain!

We have returned from a weekend stay at Plas Dolmelynllyn. My wife is just back on her feet following a serious operation and wanted a relaxing stay in a welcoming atmosphere.
We arrived a little earlier than advised but this wasn't a problem and our room was ready for us.
The room (Ysgethin) was a little smaller than we had hoped for which limited the bed to a standard double but was well fitted out with a tv, radio with docking station and plenty of storage space. The ensuite bathroom looked very modern with a roll top bath with overhead shower and a modern basin and illuminated mirror. It was well stocked with plenty of complimentary toiletries.
We had already booked to eat there on the first night and after a relaxing drink in the conservatory bar we were led down to our table where we enjoyed the best meal we have had in ages. The food was freshly cooked and served exactly as asked (my wife is very fussy with her food and always asks for no trimmings, salad, veg etc which many restaurants can't provide even after being asked)
We immediately agreed to eat there again on the second night and Breakfast only confirmed our decision. There was a table serving a help yourself buffet of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, toast and tea & coffee. The waitress then took your order for whatever cooked breakfast you wanted. The ingredients were again fresh and well cooked, the sausages are superb!
As my wife wasn't able to walk too far she enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in and around the lounge area benefitting from the free wi-fi, while I had a quick ramble up and around the waterfalls, a sight not to be missed and a well signed route.
The owner (Alan) was very friendly and kept asking if my wife's foot was ok and if there was anything he could do. The rest of the staff were very helpful and although working hard always had time for the guests.
To summarise, as the title suggests, this is a hotel with a bit of history and it's own identity. Not just another stereotypical hotel. Yes there may be things that could be improved or modernised but then it would begin to cost more and lose some of it's identity.
Thanks for a great relaxing weekend and look forward to returning again sometime.

Booked to stay here as a 3 star country hotel. Alarm bells rang when we pulled up in front of a building in need of lots of maintenance the dead hanging basket was not the kerb appeal I was looking for!
Check in was mixed nice building but awful decor plus very confusion on check in as, owner, I think clearly thought we were someone else.
Shown to room and first thoughts were can I go home! Very small all furniture a mis match and whilst clean at ground level don’t look up!
Went downstairs to find bar and restaurant. Found something looking like a bar same lady as on reception appeared and we were informed that there was no restaurant that evening due to staff illness. Asked for wine list there wasn’t one - only 3 bottles of red to choose from ie one of each!
Talked to other residents who informed us that there was no restaurant previous evening, again they were not informed on check in. They, however, did take a look at the restaurant, in the cellar, and in their opinion it hadn’t been used for a long time.
My advise is for this establishment to stop marketing themselves as an hotel and to invest in being a B&B.
I will never return as price paid was not budget but mid range and hat we got was only worth £50 a room not the £120 paid
It’s a shame to see such a fabulous building and location in such a degree of neglect

Sir I am sorry that as the hotel was full when you arrived and that you were confused about our room naming policy (unclear where you go the idea you had booked a superior room as we do not have such a classification on rooms) the photos and descriptions on site are for specific named rooms you selected as on your paperwork all the rooms are named and as you agreed was the same as the website, the door you opened to the room next door was a grade higher than yours which you could have booked on the Saturday you booked yours as it was available but was £30 more per night and as it was booked to a guest so as you requested we could not give you that room for the same price you paid, we always try to accomodate but it was already booked out. I heard you discussing with all the other guests how terrible it was that we were not running a restaurant that night, again our appologies If staff are ill given our location in a small village it is not possible on a few hours notice to find alternative staff. However happy you enjoyed the meal at the nearby restaurant. And as it happens no other guests had intended to eat in that night. As you could imagine the celler restaurant room is not heavily used in summer mainly for Families or people wanting a party instead the conservatory bar is used overlooking the garden. It would have been nice to know if the cleaning of that room had been an issue someone would have immediatly rectified whatever was the problem, you do not say just that it was above! could have been added to the checklist for day staff to avoid any possible repeat. And again sorry that you had personnaly had a dissapointing stay, and the family you referred to giving you advise on the restaurant had a wonderful stay celebrating his 50th birthday and this is the challenge of not being a multiple hotel with standard furniture and offering we are what we are a small family run hotel in the middle of the largest forrest in snowdonia with waterfalls in the garden, We are also currently in the middle of a drought which we have avoided effecting our guests but plants in the garden get the minium neccasary to survive and definitely no hoespipes at the moment but this You would expect!

Stayed 3 nights, upgraded to Dulas room as problem with room we'd originally booked which had a jacuzzi bath, bonus! Breakfast was delicious with good choice of cooked breakfasts. Dinner was equally good. Beautiful, peaceful setting and helpful, friendly staff. Only small complaint was that shower was not very powerful.

Plas Dolmelynllyn was quiet on this occasion, and we were upgraded to the four-poster room. The staff and owner were very friendly and efficient, the bedroom room was large and well equipped with lovely views out over the gardens and down the valley towards Cadair Idris. The bed was extremely comfortable - firm yet soft - best night's sleep away from home for a long time! The evening meal was really good - tasty and well cooked, as was the breakfast the following morning.
We would happily return to Plas Dolmelynllyn again.

There are three taxi firms in the immediate area, to be safe you are best giving as much notice as possible as being a rural area they mostly only have or 4 cabs each, but very possible to venture out top some nice restaurants
We are in the middle of Coed-y-Brenin Forest in snowdonia the nearest town is Dolgellau about 5 miles down the road to the south.
