Detailed Reviews
Booked one night here for myself and parents before catching the ferry …. and what a find! Friendly staff, very clean rooms with sanitiser freely available throughout , huge towels, lovely sea facing rooms and massive portions for our evening meals. My parents were in accessible room 10, ground floor with walk in shower. I was on the first floor, room 10, with shower over bath and we were all pleasantly surprised by the cost and quality. We’d a really nice meal (superb selection & quality). Only one wee gripe being the time it took for our drinks to arrive. From being shown to the empty bar it was a full 15 mins before our order was taken and then 10 more before it arrived. I’d definitely stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

We had a lovely lunch at Craignelder Hotel today. We arrived on spec and despite it being a busy day of the year we were welcome by the owner who quickly found directed us to a table and advised of the specials. All staff extremely helpful and a warmth about them. Lovely home made food served on piping hot plates. Excellent value. We shall certainly return.

Spent a very comfortable night in the Craignelder. Bed was just right. Lovely quiet room. Spotlessly clean. Not sure if toiletries provided, there were none in our room. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious, and served on hot plates. Our server was great.I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel.

We called on two occasions to check if hotel was dog friendly. The first time we called the girl wasn’t sure so said she would check with Manager and call back, she called back and said they were happy to take the booking and the dog would only be allowed in the room and bar area. When i then rang back to book I spoke to a different person who again needed to check if the dog was allowed and then confirmed it was Ok but that the dog would not be allowed in public areas. We were happy with that as we had an early ferry crossing the next morning so just wanted a clean room and hot water for a shower.
When we checked in girl mentioned that the money had already been taken on the day, We were not made aware of this when we booked, She did apologise and explained that she always advises guests of this at the time of booking, we were not made aware of this. On the evening we had dinner in the restaurant, service was slow and food very average, also had to ask for water 3 times. In fact one gentleman waited for so long, no one came near him so he left. It looked like a lot of young staff but no clear management around to ensure things ran smoothly. We had no hot water that night but didn’t think too much of it. The next day we were up early before 6am and there was no hot water, ran tap for ages but it wasn’t even luke warm. We were the only guests up at that time.
When I spoke to the lady in the breakfast room she shouted to her colleague that ‘there is no hot water again’. I mentioned that this was unacceptable, she said the proprietor was not yet in so I asked that they call me when they arrived. I never received a call so emailed the following week, the response was 2 lines as below:
Our apologise about the hot water, when there is a lot of guests using the water at the same time, you will find a small dip in temperature, so unfortunately, we will not be looking to offer a refund at this time.
I have spoken with the Proprietor and on looking at your hotel bill we had noticed that we had not charged you £10.00 for your dog, this fee will be waived.
As mentioned before we were the only guests up at this time so the excuse about it being a busy time for showers is unacceptable and they clearly do not wish to deal with a complaint effectively.
The cost of the room was £95 which in the context of not being able to have a hot shower is a complete rip off. Also the door into the backroom had a large dent in it which we didn’t mention, perhaps the previous guests were also unable to have a hot shower. The comment regarding cost to have the dog stay in also nonsense. We have stayed in many places with our dog and if there is a charge this normally includes a bed bowl treat, etc and also an area where pets are allowed (ie bar area) this was not the case here so I feel its another poor excuse at not dealing with our complaint effectively. I have also asked for the proprietors name but have not been provided with this. Overall a very disappointing place who just want to take your money but not provide even a basic service.

I stayed here for two nights and the room was ridiculously tiny. For the price I thought it was quite bad. The older women of the staff was lovely and the food was great.
A fire alarm went off at 3am, FYI you need to update your fire assembly area information cause its blank on the door... but the night porter had no idea what caused the alarm and went away to check only to come back minutes later asking if anyone was smoking and then said he has no clue why it went off ....
There is no WiFi... it's advertised as having WiFi but it just had an unlocked bar one which disconnects constantly. Would not return.

The room is a good size with a comfy bed and decent sized bathroom. Everywhere is very clean. Staff were great (very pleasant and welcoming) and there was a good cooked breakfast. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the centre and it is right at the waterfront.
The only downside was the noise from the kitchen. I was in room 14, and in fairness, when I checked in I was advised that there would be noise during dinner because of a fan. However, you can hear every word from people working in the kitchen, the clatter of pots and plates, etc. It also woke me up one morning with breakfast starting. People weren't acting unreasonably- the kitchen is a working area but it's not great for guests.
Apart from the noise in the room, it was a good place to stay.

The rooms were smelling of cheap overpowering bleach and air freshener, the rooms were tiny and a tap fell off with water everywhere. 2nd night was better but not great ultimately we left and booked in to Northwest castle hotel which was outdated but much better.
Stranraer was little to nothing to do here but wouldn't advise staying in the Craigelder bar area was not much bigger than a garden shed and was a cheap looking establishment.
As for the food I can't comment as we didn't eat here I didn't like the look of the place and decided to eat elsewhere- I have since been told the food is average but I can't comment myself.
Best thing about Stranraer was the Taxi guy George and the way out of the area. Safe to say I won't like to be stuck there again!

Travelled a good distance to sample the fare, should have stayed at home. Waited almost 40 mins for the food to arrive, the overcooked pasta and frozen chips hardly worth the drive. One decent waitress and the rest were kids who hadn't a clue.

Today I had to cancel a booking at this hotel due to a cancellation hospital appointment for my wife. The hotel was well within its rights to charge full price but they charged me nothing accepting that it was a situation out with my control and in these hard times for hospitality this was great. Good to know that there is still compassion about. If I’m in the area again i will not go past this hotel.
