Nestled in a scenic harbor location, The Portpatrick Hotel by Compass Hospitality delights guests with its stunning views and proximity to serene walks. While the rooms are comfortable, some guests have called out the need for modernization. The hotel's atmosphere is welcoming, though the charm doesn't quite extend to the outdated room interiors.
Service is generally praised for its friendliness, despite occasional lapses. Cleanliness receives mixed reviews, particularly in the dining areas. Overall, visitors consider the hotel to provide reasonable value, bolstered by appreciated amenities like dog-friendly policies and ample parking.

Detailed Reviews
My husband and I stayed at this hotel whilst on a Shearing holiday break. Arrived at the hotel where the reception staff were quite abrupt, checked in and were given our room key.
Well, well it was like turning the clock back 20 years that was the impression that we got when we entered our room. Old grubby carpet and curtains, the windows hadn't seen any paint in the last ten years. Seeing that there was only people staying there who were on our coach leaves a lot to be desired. All the rooms must be the same as I would have thought that hotel would have made sure that all guests were given the best rooms that were available.
Food was very good but who knows what the state of the kitchen was in.
The location of this hotel is amazing with magnificent views but this is not enough the hotel needs so much money spending on it to bring it up to the former glory.

My partner and I were residents at the hotel this weekend for 1 night.
The setting is beautiful and despite the initial mix up with the booking, the staff were very helpful.
A particular shout out to the lady running the bar. She was very attentive and coped extremely well with a high number of orders.
The room was clean with an excellent view over the Port. The shower pressure was a bit off but everything else was spot on.
The low point certainly had to be our dining experience. The menu was limited and restricted further by the fact that our meal was included in the price.
Service was a bit slow but the staff seemed relatively inexperienced so that was to be expected. The gentleman that appeared to be running the dining room was pleasant but lacked experience in hospitality. I ordered a bottle of wine that was brought over and sat on the table without further consultation. The food order was taken before the drinks order but thats just personal taste above all else.
The starters were average but edible. The pate was shop bought which was disappointing.
The mains and desserts were poor. I ordered a steak medium rare that was verging on bleu. The cut of meat was very fatty and it is frustrating for a chef to serve up such a poor cut. The chips were frozen and the pepper corn sauce was tasteless. I paid a £13 supplement which in all honesty was not a good touch.
My partner ordered salmon which came with sweet potato fries and an additional side of coleslaw. The salmon was over cooked and again the fries were frozen. The coleslaw was ordered as an extra at a price of around 3.50. What was served was a small sauce dish that contained a tablespoon of coleslaw.
For dessert I ordered a lemon meringue pie. It was ok but again it was frozen.
My partner ordered a “selection of ice creams”. It was a Neapolitan. Really ?
All in all, aside from the food the stay was pleasant. I would not recommend dining here though. There are plenty of good eateries in Portpatrick village.

I went on this trip with family to celebrate my mothers 88th birthday.
Boarded coach from Bolton in good health.
The coachman part way through journey apologised for having air con on at 26 degrees centrigade he then blasted us with colder air. Recycled air full of germs was so unpleasant throughout the journey to Penrith.
Though I wore support socks my feet became swollen and I had to remove my ankle boots.
The room, with a view, I transferred to in Portpatrick was cold and the bathroom was as cold as ice. I had to ask for an extra blanket and heater.
I woke in the middle of the night with a terrible flu/cold. My whole body was painful. I spent two whole days in bed unable to leave my room.
My mother and sister occupied a room which was so cold that both of them fell ill. My sister had to insist that hotel staff tape up the windows to stop them from freezing. They also told me that they'd been rained on whilst they were sitting in the corner of the dining room.
I was ill over Christmas and New Year and didn’t recover until 5th January 2020
Shearings Customer Services denied the overheating of the air con caused my illness and that the coach had had an MOT and at least the hotel staff had provided me with an extra blanket and heater. But the damage had already been done prior to me arriving at the hotel and was exacerbated by the freezing bathroom and cold bedroom.
They would not offer a refund so I asked to be taken off their mailing list.

Stayed here for 3 nights B&B in room 215,for our anniversary. Had an anniversary break here in 2018,and enjoyed it so booked at hotel reception for this one. Cost was £424 what was supposed to be a double room with view, turned out to be a small double at roof line(attic). Room size was roughly 14ft ×12ft, shower was an L shaped 6ft ×5ft and had to clean our self's. First morning got up to no hot water,so it was a cold wash before breakfast. Breakfast I ordered porridge followed by full-english breakfast, didn't get porridge as waiter forgot.! So if you's are thinking of booking this hotel be careful. We certainly won't be back. Disgusted .

We visited the Portpatrick Hotel in July 2021. The hotel is run down and dusty, floors creak, there are bugs and moths stuck in ceiling lights and the place smells like old Christmas decorations. We are understanding that COVID-19 has had a massive impact on the hospitality industry, however we feel that the condition of the hotel was inexcusable, the layers of dust speak for themselves. Our room had a damp smell and what appeared to be mould in the corner, there was hair on our bed, stains on our sheets and at night we found a bug inside the bedsheets - a brown and white striped insect which we found to be a carpet beetle!! Our window didn't open which wasn't ideal during a heatwave and when we requested a fan for our room we were asked to build one ourselves. We eventually got one delivered and spent about 30 minutes tightening screws to stop the noise of scraping metal every time it turned. The staff were rude and every time we visited the reception desk had to wait a minimum of 15 minutes to be spoken to, even though we were the only people waiting. We did complain the next morning and were offered an apology from the receptionist and a discount on the room, however I feel that had I seen more realistic reviews I would have never booked in the first place. We did plan on having breakfast the next morning but following our stay we couldn't entertain the idea of eating in the same place. Having worked in hospitality before I feel I am very understanding to circumstances and we have stayed in many hotels over the years, however, this is the first time I have felt strongly enough to complain and leave a review.

We had a lovely stay at The Portpatrick Hotel.
My gluten free dietary requirements were extremely well catered for with a separate gluten free menu. I was very impressed with the way staff went through the menu with me and my meals were the best I have had in a hotel. Well done to everyone.
There was entertainment on only one evening of our stay, which was a shame as there was a great atmosphere in the cosy entertainment room.
The location is absolutely stunning and staff are efficient and friendly.
Highly recommended.

We paid for a sea view twin room and felt that it was worth it as the room was quiet and a reasonable size, with a nice view of the village. We had dinner in the restaurant which was mainly good, vegetables served with the sea bass were a little odd. The public areas do look lovely and we enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar in the evening, the barmaid was very friendly and gave us some great tips for our sightseeing the next day. Not a perfect hotel but location makes up for a lot!

We arrived at The Portpatrick Hotel on 12th July 2021 for a four night stay. Getting parked was a bit of a problem and we eventually had to park next to the roundabout at front entrance. When signing in we were informed that the lift was out of order and that they were waiting on engineer coming to repair it. As we were on top floor we asked if they had any lower down rooms (as I walk with two crutches). They got a manager out as I couldn't manage all of the stairs. Manager came and after a bit of humming and hawing he found us a room on first floor offering £100 discount which unfortunately wouldn't help me get up and down stairs. My husband asked when lift was likely to be fixed and he then told us that that it could be the next day but the part required was having to be manufactured. We asked how long lift had been out and were told for over a week. We asked why they hadn't informed us (as they had our telephone number) he said they didn't think it necessary as most people can manage that amount of stairs. After struggling up the flight of stairs with my husband's assistance to first floor we went into the room. The door would not shut properly, my husband had to push it to close it. We were not enamoured with what we saw. Very dated, flaking paint, no plug sockets, one lamp between two beds and worst and final point was the cloth that had obviously been used to clean toilet was lying on top of our face towels still damp. That was enough for us and we decided to leave as we were so disgusted. Just out of curiosity my husband phoned today 26.07.21 (two weeks on) to see if lift was working and were told that engineer was arriving tonight and would be working on it tomorrow (believable?) Hotel looks beautiful from outside, is in a prime position but inside it is sadly lacking which is a shame.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comment which I find slightly harsh. We are the only hotel in Portpatrick which has lift facility and unfortunately, as any other machinery, faults might be expected. I can assure you we did everything we could to fix the issue but it is true that part had to be manufactured. We did not contact you as there was no mention on the booking that you would struggle going up the steps. Hotel was full and the alternative room was the only room available, which in the fact, should not be offered to you as an option. Kind regards

This hotel has recently been taken over and seem to be having some teething problems.
The room we had "Sea View", was quite pokey. It was on the top floor (lift not working) and consequently had sloping walls. The sea view window was at the end of the room and with no room for two people to enjoy the view that we paid for.
The paint has been recently redone but unfortunately who ever did it failed to remove the old flaking paintwork and just painted over the top.
The bathroom window wouldn't open and there are no extractors in the bathroom so will be susceptible to damp.
To be fair we complained about the locked window and the manager did come to an agreed compensation with us.
First morning breakfast was ridiculous. We had advised our booked slot for breakfast and came down promptly. We had to wait about 25 minutes to place our order, then when it came it was about an hour after our arrival. I understand a lot of other guests hadn't stuck to the booked time.
The second morning breakfast was very much improved.
I don't think they have the staff to cope with the hotel being fully booked.
I was also a little disappointed that on the second evening I couldn't get a soft drink to take upstairs (I think it was 22.45) as the bar had closed.
Overall though this is a beautiful location and the hotel looks right over the harbour with real picture postcard views.
Would I return, well if I were to get a good deal on the price, yes I probably would.

We stayed for 4 nights from 6th June. The staff are incredibly helpful and pleasant. We were on a bed, breakfast and dinner rate and, even when a coach load of guests arrived for a stay during a several day tour of the area increasing guest numbers considerably, we had excellent service and delicious food. New staff were being trained as the hotel gets back to normal but even so high standards of customer care were paramount. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel both for value and satisfaction.
