Fernhill Hotel emerges as a charming destination with its nostalgic atmosphere and vintage decor, though a refresh is occasionally suggested by some guests. The prime location near the harbour is a highlight, offering guests stunning views and proximity to local attractions.
While the hotel's value is sometimes questioned due to food pricing and quality, the amenities, including spacious rooms and a pet-friendly policy, generally receive high marks. Guests have called out the exceptional service, noting the staff's friendliness and professionalism, and cleanliness is a standout feature, despite some rooms being considered dated.

Detailed Reviews
We went for dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The hotel is beautifully situated with a great view down over the harbour at Portpatrick. The spacious dining room is well furnished and we ate near the window, enjoying the view although other people were in the adjoining conservatory. The hotel is well organised and the service largely from young locals, was good throughout. We had drinks: my wife had a gin and tonic and I had a mixer. We each had an elegant and subtle starter of creamed cooked smoked salmon with a delicate potato salad: delicious and well presented. My wife then had chicken in a sauce with potato and some other veg: well cooked and tasty. I had a sensationally good rump of lamb in a red wine reduction sauce with a most imaginative combination of vegetables. The meat had been pre-sliced, charred slightly for taste at the edges and it was the best main course I have eaten for quite a long time. Both of our dishes were very hot. We each had a glass or two of a good, full flavoured Malbec, served at room temperature. For dessert my wife had a fruit parfait with a sharp lime sorbet. I had panna cotta, with a thin chocolate strip and a vanilla ice cream and we enjoyed them as well. We didn't have coffee and our bill, including a tip of 10% was £96. I have no criticism whatsoever of the entire experience and I recommend a meal here without hesitation. We were not staying at the hotel and even on a Monday night, the room was quite full, so do book.

From the welcome you receive on arrival to the friendly and professional service given by every single member of staff we came across, we could not fault this hotel.
A great choice on the menu each evening and excellent quality and presentation of the food. The restaurant and bar staff are really on the ball and knowledgeable - a variety of characters and each so pleasant and attentive, nothing was ever too much bother and we were never kept waiting, a credit to the hotel and it's training.
The views from our room down across the town and harbour were amazing and as the weather was very wet it was so relaxing to spend an afternoon sitting in the comfortable armchairs watching the sea and the world go by from our window. If you're not lucky enough to have floor to ceiling windows in your room there is a beautiful lounge where you can experience the same.
Our room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The slipper bath wonderful to soak aching joints after a long walk. The maintenance team fixed a tap that became faulty on the bath in next to no time so that we didn't miss out on this luxury - many thanks for this.
Portpatrick is picture perfect, a beautiful spot to explore, the walks along the cliffs are stunning. You could pass by the Port Pantry without giving it a second glance, but it's well worth going in for quick bite or cake and coffee. The bars also offer good lunches and if your not eating in the hotel every night, Conners offers a great evening meal option. Good facilities for such a small place.
We will definitely return to Fernhill, the quality of service they offer is so enjoyable.

Stayed here for two nights recently. We have stayed at the Fernhill several times and always find a consistent level of service and excellent food.
On this visit we’ve only given a 4 star review, the main reason was due to the fact that we had to keep reminding the serving staff of my husbands intolerance to gluten in the dining room. We had flagged this on booking and we’re assured he would be catered for, however the dining room obviously hadn’t been notified and kept giving my husband the regular menu and bring him regular canapés. There was a gluten free menu but the inefficiency of the staff flagging this on the order made us very nervous, especially when a steak dish was delivered with onion rings (which were obviously not on the gluten free menu). We felt like we were constantly having to tell them and ensure that each dish brought to my husband was ok for him to eat. The young members of staff obviously need further training as some didn’t seem to understand the concept of a gluten intolerance and the serious impact it could have if they got it wrong. To note we’ve never had such a problem on previous visits.
The other small point was that our room had been redecorated and there was a slight smell of paint in there. Maybe could ventilate the room more during housekeeping to eliminate this.
Portpatrick is such a lovely place. We will definitely be back.

We have had excellent stays at Fernhill in the past. However, we are just back from a very disappointing three night stay. The room was warm and spacious, with two armchairs and an outfoor balcony, though a bit dated. However all the staff in the dining room, though personable and chatty, seemed to be students, with no sign of managers and more experienced staff keeping a check on service. The food was dulla nd pedestrian with little flavour. I had a chicken terrine as a starter one night, it had been made in a loaftine lined with ham. However I got the end bit which comprised a small slice of ham with no terrine, and nothing to spread on the three oatcakes. After being told that a flat white coffee was available a black coffee arrived. The following night we were told that "Gregor can't get the coffee maching to work". The service was consistently slow and often not pro-active but only reacting to requests, dirty dishes were left on the table at breakfast. We were told that because of covid, there was a one-way system which involved leaving the hotle at one end by a fire escape and walking round the hotel outside and then into the bar and dining room reception area, however on doing this half and hour before our dinner reservation to have a drink in the barm the door was still locked, adn we had to retrace our steps back round outside the hotel to alert the receptionist to phone and remind staff to unlock the door to the dining room. When leaving the dining room after dinner one night we asked to make our breakfast reservation, which we had been told was necessary to ensure that people arrived at staggered times to facilitate social distancing, however a "new start" assured us that we could come at any time when breakfasr was served and clearly had had no initial training.
Of more concern is our assumption, based on our experience, that the cleaning of the rooms between guest is of the same poor standard, with no supervision, which in with covid 19 still so prevalent, constitutes a significant publid health risk.

We visited this hotel with my parents and it was quite clear to see the disparity between the rooms. We stayed in a room that I presume has not been part of the updates to the hotel (room 12) and were very disappointed in the standards of the room itself. The room was tired, the bathroom covered in cobwebs, the shower curtain stained and unappealing with an electric shower that delivered a poor stream of water which was fairly dire.
The bed and the pillows were lumpy and clearly aged. What was surprising, considering we saw numerous house keeping staff congregating for long chats both in the reception and in the car park, was that during the course of a three night stay nobody checked to see if we needed anything.
Fresh towels were not offered, no refresh of the amenities were given (which were basic at best in any event) and nobody came to clean the room. Given the price tag of GBP 150 per night these basics were sadly lacking and meant the room felt overpriced for the service received and for the quality of the room itself.
This was juxtaposed with the experience of my parents, who stayed in an updated part of the hotel and had a much better room and experience albeit common areas were not really well maintained with cobwebs seeming to be the chosen decoration for most spaces.
Staff were friendly albeit not terribly interested in engaging with us about the stay or to see if there was anything we needed. Breakfast was limited for the price tag and service simply ok. At the end of the stay there was also numerous glasses of wine on our bill which was an error.
Given that the rooms were not cleaned at all during our stay I would have rather stayed in self catering accommodation which would have offered better value for money and a more updated setting.

My wife and I have stayed in this hotel four times before and it used to be a good experience, sadly not now. Yes, Covid is an issue but good hotels will try harder and do better than lessor hotels and sadly Fernhill is very much in the latter class. Once hearty breakfasts are now decidedly mean - I've never seen haggis and black pudding sliced down to 1/8 th of an inch. I understand when they say "due to Covid, we're not cleaning the rooms...." but in addition to providing such poor service, they nonetheless charge their normal full high season prices. We were there for 4 nights, total bill was close to £1000 for really nothing better than 2-star service. Sadly, I feel decidedly ripped off.
Will I return? Not unless I see evidence of improvement.

So we booked this hotel in beautiful Port Patrick as a little breakaway for a two night stay. The reason we booked it was because it’s supposed to be ‘DOG FRIENDLY’
Well let me tell you, it is NOT dog friendly at all! We asked if our two little dogs could join us for breakfast and we’re told that dogs are not allowed in the restaurant. Ok we though, we would have breakfast in the bar area. Apparently not… dogs are also not allowed in the bar area (although I took one in last night when I went to get my husband and I a nightcap) so I asked was there anywhere we could eat and drink with our dogs and was told no, and that they would either have to stay in the room (what’s the point of taking them with us if they couldn’t spend time with us in a ‘dog friendly’ hotel) or and this I cannot believe, ‘you can leave them in your car’ Absolutely disgusted by this! So much so, that we told them we would not be staying for a second night and would be leaving.
We had to go for breakfast one by one so that was disappointing. I went first and then my husband after me. When he went down, they hadn’t taken away my plate or cup or wiped the table down. Apparently this was because I had used them so it was apparently ok for my husband to sit at a dirty table.!?
Whilst packing our things, the receptionist came to our room and said that she has spoken to the owner and that he had AGREED to ALLOW us into the bar area with our dogs. No thank you! The hotel should accommodate specific areas to allow dogs to be with their owners as the hotel is supposed to be dog friendly…
The bedroom itself was ok but was over the kitchen (room 3) so if you want an early night or a lie in, forget it!
The noise from the kitchen fans are very loud!
We would not have booked this hotel if it had not been advertised as dog friendly and being told to ‘leave your dogs in the car’ is an absolute disgrace! So dog owners beware!!

Response from The McMillan Family, Owner at Fernhill Hotel
Responded 17 Sept 2021
‘Dog Friendly’ from our point of view, means that we are happy to welcome guests with their dog or dogs and happy to accommodate dogs in some of our hotel rooms and in some of our public areas, and of course in all of our wonderful surrounding countryside. We don’t see ‘dog friendly’ as meaning that dog owners can have their dogs with them in every single area of the hotel, at any time, without taking into account how other guests might feel about this, or how the presence of dogs might affect their stay. Lots of people are allergic to dogs, or nervous of dogs, and anyone, even the most ardent dog lover, can be disturbed by other people’s dogs barking or making a noise in a hotel. We also have to take into account that your dog might not be the only one staying with us so our policy has to be designed to be as welcoming as possible, while also preventing any problems from arising. We all love our own dogs and we like to have them with us, but just as a matter of courtesy, we have to accept that other people may not feel the same way! Here is what it says in our booking terms. DOGS All of our hotels welcome dogs, for a small extra charge of £5 per dog per night. We don’t allow dogs in some of our public lounges, bars and restaurants. Each hotel allows dogs in one or more designated public areas. Please ask when booking. We won’t normally allow more than two dogs per bedroom and request that dogs are not left unaccompanied in bedrooms, lest damage is done, or other guests are disturbed by noise. We reserve the right to charge for any damage or extra cleaning required, and, if your dog disturbs other guests, we will ask you to take steps to prevent this from recurring. Please call the hotel of your choice if you require further information. This couple booked online through a third party site. They then emailed us directly to say they were bringing two small dogs and we emailed back to say this was absolutely fine. We also sent them out a confirmation letter with a link to our booking terms containing all of the above information. They didn’t call or ask for any further information. At Fernhill, guests are welcome to sit with their dogs and have a drink in the residents lounge but not in the bar itself, because its’ pretty much a part of the dining room. We don’t allow dogs (except guide dogs) into any of our dining rooms. During a meal service, these rooms are very busy with guests coming and going. There are also lots of staff moving around carrying hot plates and hot coffee pots and glasses on trays etc. And of course we are serving food in these rooms. We don’t mind if dogs are left in their owners room while they go for dinner or breakfast but if they bark we have to ask their owner to persuade them to stop, or remove them from the room, and if they scratch the door or rip up the carpet, we have to make a charge. The first we knew of this couple’s wish to bring their two dogs into the breakfast room was when they came down in the morning. The couple were very angry and rude to our receptionist when advised this wasn’t possible. She called senior management and was asked to let the couple know that we didn’t want them to be disappointed, or miss breakfast, so we would set up a special table for them in the bar area, very close to the breakfast area, but not actually in among the other guests. This offer was rejected and the couple left the hotel a day early, leaving us with an empty room and lost revenue. Its’ worth mentioning that lots of our guests bring dogs with them, and that, over the years, very few have had any issue with not being allowed to bring them into our dining rooms. We don’t think it’s an unreasonable restriction and the vast majority of our dog owning guests seem happy with it.

Old fashioned room in older part of the hotel but stunning views of Portpatrick. Food was good and well presented though menu was repetitive. Service was slow at all meals even when it wasn’t busy. Room was only cleaned once though we were told that on arrival. Lots of sanitisers and most staff wore masks but not many guests besides us wore any.

i was unfortunate to have been booked in to this hotel as my regular hotel was fully booked,
room booked was a double with ensuite room provided was a twin
i fully understand the need to book table and accept this is a requirement so when you book you would expect that this would be passed to dinning room it didn't appear to be so,
positive the food in the evening is worth the wait and you will have one ,
negative the food served as a full grill i have not needed anyone to cut my food up for me in a long time so was surprised the kitchen felt the need to not only cut up black pudding and hagis they cleary lost half of each Possible that one of the other diners had grabbed it of the plate on the way passed while they waited to be served .
free Wifi is offered in the booking and at a couple of pointsover two days the Wifi actually connected to the internet, it was pointed out to staff members that the Wifi was not working by numerous people, this was shrugged of at best and ignored by the majority. early breakfast was booked for 07:30 by 8 am myself and others still had not orders taken as i had an appointment which is why i had booked early i couldnt say of i was going to get the other half of the Blackpudding or hagis , the room was ok at best and to be honest if there had been other accomadation available i would have moved . will i stay here again No will i recomend YES to drive by ...

Response from The McMillan Family, Owner at Fernhill Hotel
Responded 16 Aug 2021
Apologies first of all for any delays in meal service. The hotel was exceptionally busy and like most UK hotels, we are a little bit short staffed to be so busy as we are. Everyone is trying their best and working very hard. Some of our double rooms have zip and link beds so they can also be used as twin rooms. Apologies if we made the bed up as a twin by mistake. We would have been happy to change it had we known. We serve half slices of black pudding and haggis on our breakfast grills, partly because not everyone eats it and partly so that there is enough room on the plate for everything else. We would have been happy to have served more on request. We had a problem with the wifi during your stay. These things happen sometimes. It was reported to our IT company as soon as we became aware of it. It took a couple of days to get it diagnosed and fixed. We can't imagine any of our nice staff shrugging at you or ignoring you, but we are very concerned by the comment. Please contact us directly if you would like to discuss this further. Apologies again.

On arrival, we were welcomed by two friendly and professional reception team members.
A few minor issues with the bedrooms such as the bedside lamp not working and no net over the window.
I do think the rooms should be serviced daily. It's too easy to say due to COVID-19, rooms will be serviced every third day.
The food in the restaurant on the first evening was excellent. Sadly the same cannot be said for the second evening. The steak (£10 extra supplement) was gristly and the chips were frozen. I think tea/coffee should be included as well as ice cream for a pudding choice (£3 supplement for three scoops).
The waiting team were friendly and hardworking . However, there didn't seem to be any sight of a restaurant manager as the delivery of the food appeared disjointed. The bread roll for my soup came after I had finished. The drinks arrived during our main meal. Breakfast was the same; tea delivered but no milk.
Cleanliness in the restaurant was good apart from the the shelf next to our table. The same mess was there on Sunday from the Friday.
This was our third visit to the FernhillI and I feel it has lost that little something special it had previously.

I am sure they will accept dogs, best to give them a ring to confirm.
Parking no problem, I am unsure about the rates.
Yes there is free wifi everywhere there - we also had a room along from reception - lovely room and great view
Hello Joan, We only visited hotel for dinner, so I have no knowledge of the accommodation. It's a classy hotel though and I can't see it not being wheelchair friendly. As previous commenter, give them a ring, they were most helpful when I visited.
Hi there are stairs (short flights), but my step mother who was also disabled managed them slowly. The staff were very "needs aware" and I'm sure they would provide help where needed. If you contact the hotel, you could ask for a room on the ground floor. There is a lower floor, but that has stairs to it. There is a ramp leading to the ground floor. Good luck with the booking, it is a very nice hotel with lovely food and kind staff.
