We essentially used the Downshire Arms as a place to stop before getting the Stranraer to Belfast Ferry the next day. Portpatrick is about five or six miles from the ferry port of Stranraer. The Downshire Arms is a nice little hotel located near the seafront in this scenic village. The hotel was comfortable, reasonably priced and provided a sound breakfast. The previous evening we ate in the Harbour Arms just across the street which was good food in a lively enough pub. I would recommend the Hotel and Portpatrick for a quick stopover, or as we did, a place to stay before travelling to Ireland.

Had a nice peaceful stay here, but first morning was a bit disappointing, breakfast meant to be from 8-9am, l went in small dining room abt 8.05, nobody about, just silent, eventualy someone appeared, no such thing as good morning, l had to ask where to sit, then go & look for someone to ask for a breakfast, then again to ask for tea, eventualy l got breakfast, l had to ask for toast, finished my breakfast still no toast, l just left, so the second morning l made up my mind not to even bother, it was a pity really !

Stayed here with 5 other pals on golf weekend. We booked one of the cottages with 3 rooms. Overall the cottage was fine but there was only one shower which was rediculous. We had to wait for each of us to shower which took up ages. Need second shower room. Last morning at breakfast bit of a farce as chef did not turn up, so no breakfast. Eventually got bacon rolls! Would not use again.

After explaining to you the layout of your accommodation we find it hard to believe that you are complaining. We upgraded you into a holiday home as there was no room in the Hotel, this was at a discounted price. We agreed to give you breakfast in the hotel which we did but unfortunately we will accept there was a mix up on the final morning for breakfast, we accommodated you with this by not charging Mr Keyser with his extra night accommodation and we still managed to give you bacon rolls before you went off to golf. We find this very unfair and disappointing that you try to damage our business by your comments.

Went with a mate to watch the Scotland game and was shocked to see that apart from the bar staff we were the only people wearing a mask. It was mobbed.
It’s called a sports bar but staff didn’t know that a game was on or what channel.
I had to ask the barman to top up my pint as apparently they don’t know how much a pint is.
The toilet was like something you would see in a prison movie. No seat just a stainless steel toilet. No soap or towels and the door leading to the urinals wedged open.
To put the icing on the cake a band started playing at 9.30 while the game was still on. “Sports bar”
There are a couple of decent pubs in Portpatrick. This isn’t one of them.
Do yourself a favour and avoid like the plague.

So, the Downshire. We paid £90 through booking.com for a double with breakfast. There is a general sense of neglect about the place. Our double room suffered from damp with the wallpaper pealing in places. The stair carpet was pretty grotty. The wireless didn't reach our 2nd floor room despite the helpful staff rebooting the router a couple of times. Water in morning wasn't warm enough; apparently it runs out if too many people have shower. The hotel wasn't busy so must be pretty bad when full. If we'd paid £45 then it would have been about right. For £90 I'd expect something decent. Sadly, the Downshire is far from that. A bright spot was the breakfast; with the poached eggs going down nicely. I'm Dubious of some of the other accommodation reviews here. The place needs to be completely renovated. I did mention all of the above to the staff who were mostly helpful.

I stayed here in 2003 and loved my stay. I gave the barmaid a gold watch as I was so pleased. I recommend this hotel to everyone. It is close to the harbour and has great sea views. I will definitly be going back with my new wife soon.

I’m sorry to say this is possibly the worst place we’ve ever stayed in. Our friends arrived and took one look at their room and refused to stay. The walls were damp, the bathroom door didn’t close, the shower was poor, the corridor smelt of chip fat. To add insult to injury it was £90 per night. Nice owner and ok breakfast but that’s about it.

Stayed here with a bunch of golfing friends. Food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner cannot be faulted. However rooms are old, antiquated and need of some modernisation. there for 2 days and had to endure cold water shoers, didnt matter what time of the day. TV didn't work. One of my golfing friends encountered a'tick' embedded in his leg after sleeping in his bed which is not a great ambassador for hygienic , sanitarty conditions. Would i bring my wife to this hotel. No, Would i go back if i weren't playing golf..No.. 5 out of 5 for foof, 2 out of 5 for accom

It is very unfair that someone can put a review on which is totally untrue. All our laundry is done by a professional company. This is possible a competitor trying to run us down if not I would like to hear form the person concerned. Please contact me Paul Phillips

We stayed here for 3 nights last weekend, for my mates 50th. The hotel cost was great value for money, and included 2 rounds of golf. Rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable. The food , breakfast and dinner is top class, and plenty of it. The bar is well priced and very friendly, good entertainment. I think a special mention has to go to the staff, they are fantastic, very friendly and helpful, we will definitely be back. Thanks guys for helping to make a good weekend great..

After a long day in the area on business I was looking forward to a good nights sleep in a confortable bed. Unfortunately this was not to be. Room was on the top floor of the hotel with no lift available and staff did not offer to help with cases. Room had unconfortable bed with plasticy mattress and smelt of damp. Bedding was cold and damp to touch. The only window in the room was bolted shut and could not be opened for ventilation. No bedside table or light. And the price? £89 a night!!
