My partner and I stayed at the Highland cottage Hotel at the beginning of September for 3 nights and we have say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The hotel itself is a 5 minute walk from all the local amenities, and has a homely feel to it, with comfortable, clean and tidy rooms, we both agreed it was the best night's sleep we had in a long time, as it was so quiet.
Dave and Jo were very friendly, the perfect hosts and made us feel welcome right from the start and that set the tone for our entire stay, the food on offer was 5*quality with a good selection for breakfast, and the evening meal was like nothing we had ever tasted before.
Without a doubt we would highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely stay there again.
Gordon and lynda.

Our trip was organised by a tour company that have a room that is assigned to them by Highland Cottage (Nantucket) located on the front of the property. Although we were staying in Tobermory for 6 nights they only had the room available for 3 nights, then we had to move to another hotel for 1 night and back again for the final 2 nights. When we reviewed both hotels on trip advisor before our trip and saw that Highland Cottage was 'oldy woldy' which would not be to our normal taste, we were slightly disappointed that we were not staying at the other hotel which looked far more modern and much more to our taste. However, we were pleasantly surprised by our stay at Highland Cottage, despite our initial thoughts/concerns, if we were given the same options again we would definitely stay at Highland Cottage.

Jo is warm and welcoming and wants to do everything she can to make your stay as pleasant and good as possible, even seeking advice from local wildlife experts (as we were having no luck in finding otters).

As I mentioned above, the accommodation is set in 'oldy woldy' style, we preferred our second room (Staffa) as it had a view of the harbour, but both were adequate and comfortable. The second room had lots of memorabilia relating to Staffa island which was really interesting and it was a nice association with the room name.

We like our own space and are quite private people so we didn't use the lounge area that was available. We didn't dine at the hotel as we only really eat one course and the only dinner on offer is a 3 course meal at £49.50/head, so we opted to eat in the town which is a short walk (although a steep climb back) but we did that walk 4 nights out of the 5 we stayed at Highland Cottage, so very doable. It would be nice if Highland Cottage offered an option of 1 or 2 courses rather than the whole 'fine dining' option which on a 5/6 night stay makes it a costly option. We ate in the local pub/restaurant down by the harbour most nights.

The breakfast is excellent and is served by David, who is slightly eccentric, but tries hard to be entertaining (although possibly not to everyones taste).

In summary we had a lovely stay and thank them for the hospitality given to us.

Our host Dave very kindly gave us a lift up and down the steep hill with our cases on the first/last day. We stayed for four nights, eating in for the first night. We were travel-worn and not very hungry but were able to ask for fewer courses, which was taken into account on our bill. However, Dave seemed disappointed when we declined the full dinner service with pre-dinner drinks and canapes. Our room was fine, if a little crowded with ornaments which are not to all tastes and take up space. Plentiful hot water and very comfortable mattresses. The times for breakfast were presented as rather rigid and made us feel a little like we were had to appear on the dot, which is not relaxing. Dave and Jo were attentive, and Jo especially had a very kind manner which we appreciated. Her cooking was clearly skilled and she genuinely cared about our comfort and getting the most out of our stay.

A great concept for a low staff hotel. The quality of this hotel is great, it uses a pre-shared unique code system to get you into the building and your room. There is no traditional check in.
In fact you may go a whole stay without seeing any staff at all. There are visiting cleaning staff, who we did meet one day, and a manager who apparently lives on site. So should you need anything or anyone Im sure it would be provided quickly. However the concept is very much a ‘hands off’ operation.

We stayed in room 7 - This room is beautifully decorated, recently by the look of it. High end furniture and fixings, plus a big TV with streaming software on (iPlayer, Netflix etc). I would suggest a dressing table with mirror would be a good addition though!
The bathroom is beautiful, all be it lacking in shelf space to unpack toiletries onto around the sink.
The bed was lovely and really comfortable with a really snuggly duvet. Plug sockets available by the bedside table and with usb charge points - always useful.
The only slight downs side was the noise transfer from other rooms, creaking floorboards and general loud voices plus the ventilation system in the bathroom did seem to conduct sound from other rooms quite well.

Breakfast is provided as a a cold continental option, with the usual components being placed in your room fridge along with utensils etc to allow you to sit at the table in your room (at least that was our case) and have a private relaxed start to the day!
There is a Nespresso coffee machine in the room too with daily refreshed pods. Oddly though they also provide teabags - however no kettle. That particular coffee machine does’t provide just hot water (we have one at home) so not sure what the expected process was! We just missed out on our cups of tea!

The biggest hit with us was the (cash only) honesty bar and lounge space downstairs - which means you can get a drink and sit and chill out whenever you want! Prices are reasonable and the stock is impressive with local and Scottish Gins and Whiskeys available.

Would love to stay again, though I would say it was on the higher side of our budget - and especially as there is no on-site restaurant so you loose that time in the hotel to go and eat. It was a 10 min walk to the Western Isles Hotel and their restaurant, a 15 min walk down hill to the harbour and a 20min walk to their sister restaurant and bar at the Marina… seems a shame as our room was by far the fanciest place we went into in Tobermory.

Parking was on street and plentiful, though you are opposite the fire station so big vehicles may need to take care.

I would hope they just get those last few bits mentioned above sorted, to really push it into the category of hotel it is clearly aiming for.

The friendly greeting on arrival was a good indication of the quality of this restful place to stay. The rooms are beautifully appointed and the the beds the comfiest we have experienced in a long time, the high quality of bed sheets and pillows meant for a great nights sleep. The breakfasts are very good and evening meals worth the extra money.

The owners of this business have been doing it for a long time and it shows. From the warm welcome to the comfortable, well appointed room to the very tasty cooked to order breakfast, nothing was too much trouble. Some highlights:
Room: very tastefully decorated with the right amount of useful furniture. The comfiest bed on our trip so far. Coffee machine and kettle, china teapot and cups.
Food: only breakfast but a good choice
Location: top of a very steep hill. 2 ways down to harbour but challenging. Take the car, lots of parking at marina end.
Eating out: some choice but limited. Further restaurants a car drive away.

We stayed for a couple of nights. David and Jo are fantastic hosts. the hotel was very clean and we felt happy about COVID measures.
We ate in one night and at the Tobermory Hotel for the other. Fresh seafood options would have kept us at the hotel for the second night. The climb from the front is steep but a local taxi is available to save your calf muscles.
Jo is an amazing cook. Our diner was very good and the breakfasts were the best we have eaten - attention to detail and beautifully cooked.
Highly recommended

Stayed 3 nights in this comfortable place. David and Jo were welcoming on our arrival with tea and biscuits served in one of the lovely lounges. Our room was comfortable, not huge and the bathroom was adequate. The bed was extremely comfortable. We decided to have dinner on the first night in the hotel which was very enjoyable all home cooking by Jo. Although quite expensive we would definitely recommend. We had good night's sleep although a few creeky floor boards are a bit annoying. The weather was very wet, Jo dried our outdoor coats etc each day which was very welcome. Both Jo and David are very knowledgeable about the area and have been working in the industry a long time.

This is a hotel without reception, restaurant, room service or other on-site personnel. It stroke us as weird, but turned out very good.

The access system via number codes worked flawlessly and your did not need to carry around a key. The rooms are excellent. Especially the shower far exceed what we experienced in other Scottish hotels. Every room has an internet radio for entertainment and a big screen TV. Overall, the interior is of very high quality and tastefully selected.

The breakfast is provided as "do it yourself kit" in the fridge, which holds other niceties such as chips, water and orange joice. Ingredients were good, quality was excellent and sufficient in quantity. The coffee machine (Nespresso) is of good quality. The table in the room is pretty small for breakfast, you need to manage.

On the ground floor is a honesty bar with a wide variety of available drinks based on a "pay what you drink" base. The whiskys were of good quality and the price per serving was reasonable. Close to that is a cosy lounge were you can sit and rehash the day.

It is not cheap, but if you can stomach the price, a very fair deal

We stayed for 2 nights and loved staying here.
Our room was very comfortable and homely. The room was warm, bed was very comfortable and we had everything we needed. The lounge areas were lovely too and had a beautiful view out to the harbour.

Everything was well Organised and we felt safe with all the health and safety procedures in place.

David and Jo were wonderful hosts, very friendly, knowledgeable about the area and cooked us lovely breakfasts each morning.

We would love to return and stay again.

Thank you!

Mark and Karen
