Whether you’re just looking to explore this stunning island, home to some of the world’s finest whiskies, birdlife, seafood and dramatic coastal seascapes, or you’re taking on the challenge of our championship links golf course, The Machrie is the perfect place to start your stay. An 18th century converted farmhouse sits on 7 miles of pristine beach. The hotel boasts 47 stylish rooms, suites and lodges, many with fabulous views over the fairway towards the ocean. The Machrie Links course is one of the most beautiful locations in world golf. Originally designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, the course has now been fully modernised by D J Russell. There is a reason why the Scots invented golf on links land, Machrie land, and the links turf on which the course sits is among the finest in Scotland. The dramatic setting of Laggan Bay and the sand dunes has few equals, and with the ever changing nature of the challenge offered by this acclaimed layout, it’s time you played the Machrie!

This would have been our first choice of places to stay in Islay, but unfortunately it was fully booked. We were able to have a dinner in the restaurant which was very good, but not outstanding. To its credit, although fully booked, the restaurant was very quiet and we were the only people in the lounge where we enjoyed coffee and a dram. The hotel seemed very quiet as a whole, but it is an amazing property in a beautiful location. We plan to go back later in the year when we can actually stay in the resort and sample the full experience.

Overall the hotel food, room and staff were excellent. However we did not feel it was a particularly welcoming hotel to dogs considering the price of the hotel and the 30 pounds it cost to take our dog. We were only allowed to eat downstairs or outside and had to use the outside stairs when entering snd exiting the restaurant. This was very disappointing. Also, we felt that the island itself was not particularly welcoming to tourists with a dog and also tourists in general, which was very surprising. Considering how excited we were to visit Islay on the final part of our honeymoon we have left feeling very disappointed with Islay snd the whole experience. We will not be back. My advice would be not to stay at the hotel with a dog snd do your research about where to eat and drink before hand as a number of restaurants do not allow dogs.

Stopped here for a couple of nights whilst on the Isle of Islay. The rooms were comfortable - probably the best pillows I've ever had in a hotel bedroom - and well equipped.. The public rooms also were beautifully decorated and furnished. We arrived rather late due to the time of our ferry crossing and there was initially some confusion over our dinner booking but this was soon sorted. Dinner was excellent and the service good. There was also some confusion over the breakfast arrangements due to the changes made by Covid, and there were not explained to us very well on our first morning. Breakfast was, however, very good indeed. This is very much a golfing hotel with views over the links down across the duns to the beach. It was evidently a very old hotel, much expanded and modernised and has the feel inside of a new, rather than an old building - but still very well done.

It has been many years since my last visit to the Machrie and the new owners have spent a fortune in upgrading the once. It is now bright and airy with fantastic views of the golf course from the lounge and restaurant. This was the second time I visited the hotel in three weeks and during that period there was been a massive improvement in service during that time. On my first visit service was at a snails pace, even simple things like delivering a beer took forever. During my second visit, things had improved immensely and whilst there were few hiccups it was a much better experience. The staff who really made a difference were Meghan, Angela, Terezia and Rohsni. There have been extensive improvements to the golf course and whilst it is very playable for golfers of all abilities it is still a great test. It’s well worth a visit.

Dear Drummerred Many thanks for sharing your comments following your recent stay at The Machrie. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit and that the team looked after you during your time with us. I will certainly share your comments with the team. We are very lucky to be located in such a beautiful part of Scotland and the views are amazing. The bunker project that was carried out over lockdown saw the addition of 34 new eco bunkers and 9new championship tees to the links, The new championship tees have increased the length of the course from 6,782 to 7,024 yards. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Machrie on your next visit to Islay. Kind regards Janette Napier Sales & Marketing Manager

This is a beautiful place and the standards and quality are high. Recently had 2 nights here and could not fault anything. Staff were friendly and polite and David in the pro shop was so welcoming and gave us some great tips. I just wish it was easier to get to so I could go back sooner.
