The host was kind enough to let us into our room early when I wasn’t feeling well. Unfortunately, the shower alternated between freezing (when the boiler was off) and luke warm (when the boiler was on). They assured us it would warm up by 7.30 but it didn’t meaning we had to have a cold shower - they didn’t give us the opportunity to provide feedback or ask us if it had been resolved when we checked out. My mum’s steak was also very over cooked (ordered blue and it was served medium-well) with no vegetables. Would not recommend for anyone with a disability or an elderly person due to stairs and inaccessibility.
Arrived at Dornoch Castle Hotel on the coldest day so far to the warmth And welcome of the open fire in bar area. The service throughout our one night stay was exceptional. Lovely food with excellent hosts, thank you, we will definitely return.
I heard so much about the Dornoch Castle hotel so maybe my expectations were too high, the room we stayed in definitely needed some work. The bed/mattress seemed quite old and was not comfortable and the linens/towels were also worn. The food was delicious but the whisky bar was a bit of a disappointment, it was a slow time of year so maybe we caught the bartender on an off night! The town was lovely with some wonderful shops, it is also walking distance to the beach and golf course!
As a 57 year old Scotsman, unconvinced despite a continuous professional exposure to whisky, I’d resigned to a belief that my palette was either deficient or my friends were deluded in waxing about the delights. That changed when Ben presented us with his choices of fine malts to accompany our 5 course tasting menu. If you’d said it was even possible to pair whisky with food I’d have accused you of Truss like delusions. For example who could have imagined turnip and pickle veloute, gin cured salmon and a myriad of other complex flavours such as pistachio could be matched with whisky. Ben was the perfect host with knowledge supporting a lite-hearted delivery to match the audience. This really was a life changing experience. I’m off to bore my friends now on the merits of whisky replacing wines!! …
Pleasant stay at this converted castle hotel, lovely hospitality from member of staffs, good size rooms and decent breakfast variety. Lovely fire place on the first floor ideal for cold winter day's, and reasonably priced
Exactly as expected in an old castle building. Stay elsewhere if you don’t appreciate the history and experience. The bar was well stocked and considerably depleted when we left ( excellent bar sales ) The evening meal was amazing, my wife had langoustines, great fun and well prepared Breakfast was lovely, difficult to improve on a traditional Scottish breakfast. Ours was super. Recommended.
Ok so the room was a bit on the small side but otherwise this hotel was very good - efficient and friendly staff, easy parking outside. Room decor was bright and view ok over garden. We ate in the hotel restaurant and both agreed it was a particularly good meal. Had concerns over lack of many options on the menu but what we chose was cooked perfectly and portions were ideal, leaving room for sticky toffee pudding. Breakfast, too, was very good. Dornoch itself is worth a wander, with the beach 10 mins’ walk away - miles of sand. Highly recommended.
Amazing service lovely clean rooms comfortable beds and great food ! When we had an issue with the shower they offered us another room ! They helped with our heavy bag! My husband had the partridge which was excellent and the scallops were wonderful ! Breakfast was tasty but too much
Lovely clean quirky hotel. Staff are all lovely very helpful very keen to make your stay as special as possible. Food is excellent amazing Scottish menu, food cooked fresh to order. Hotel central walking distance to explore Dornoch
Burned by the Murrays and the McKays, haunted by the McCornish, and now occupied by hundreds of bottles of scotch whisky! Such a juicy history, and a fun place to stay. We stayed in Cathedral View room and we could almost see the Plaiden Ell from our room! (I was pretty enthused about this!) The staff here was great - friendly and helpful - from check-in to dinner to the bartenders. Check-in, like in so many hotels in Scotland, is in the bar - which is great because there is always someone there to answer questions as well as pour a quick dram. The restaurant served lovely dinners (We were big fans of the Haggis bon bons! ) and a tasty breakfast. Anyway, the location is great, parking is abundant and free, the bar is cozy and .. atmospheric. As other reviewers have emphasized, the castle is old, a bit dark, lots of steps, creaking floors.. but if you are there to appreciate a 700 year old building, try some different whiskys, walk to the beach or the golf course, gawk at the cathedral and the witcheś stone.. youŕe going to love it! Thanks again to the staff (Laura especially) for a fun stay.…
