An amazing experience- I spent 2 months here , staying in both the hotel and homestays . Not only was the teaching excellent and tailored to individual needs , but the school offered a wonderful range of activities that truly introduce you to the real nicaragua - encompassing its cultural and feral natural beauty. The school is in the center...

I chose La Mariposa as a Spanish-language school because friends of mine in Nicaragua recommended it. It lived up to my hopes. First, my Spanish instruction was individualized and very effective. Second, I chose the homestay option for lodging so that I could be more immersed in Spanish. The local families that provide homestays seem to be well oriented to...

A trip to La Mariposa means second-to-none Spanish instruction, fantastic new friends from around the globe, well-planned excursions, delicious food, attentive staff, and wonderful memories you'll cherish forever...all at an affordable price while benefiting the local community! Honestly, it's a win-win. And one-on-one Spanish instruction is unheard of...except at La Mariposa!!! There's no better place to study Spanish, which is...

Thank you for this review, it is true to say that our homestay families now have a great deal of experience of hosting families with children. It can be a little hard at times but very rewarding! Look forward to your next visit!

La Mariposa Spanish School is making real change in world. You read about orgs like this and are inspired, but these folks are the real deal, living their authenticity each day. The one on one model of language instruction is brilliant for children and adults alike. The accommodations are simple, but more than adequate. The setting is tranquil, yet as...

Kevin I especially appreciate your comment that we are the "real deal"......it is really important that organisations (whatever they maybe) deliver what they say they doing.....actions count so much more than words. I do hope you all get a chance to come back someday....

I (age74) returned to the Mariposa for two weeks in August with my eldest daughter (48) and two grandsons, aged 13 and 8. We stayed in a homestay this time and all of us loveded every minute of our stay. Just as I had hoped after some initial apprehension the boys felt right at home, playing soccer with the boys...

Our family (two adults + teen daughter) had the incredible experience of staying at La Mariposa for a week in late July 2016. It far exceeded our expectations. We came for the Spanish school, but received so much more. We had three people with varying levels of Spanish (including NONE/Absolute beginner), and were so amazed by the dedicated, kind, and...

I stayed at the eco-room (yes, the one that looks like a treehouse) for a week and had the time of my life. Incredible staff and instructors, genuinely interested in your education in not only the Spanish language and in Nicaraguan culture and ecological preservation. Highly recommend and would come again if I have the chance.

The folks at Mariposa are nothing short of delightful. I took a short break from a cycle tour and stayed for a week with a home stay host family. I took 20 hours of language instruction that really helped start make things click into place. I would absolutely recommend!

I traveled to La Mariposa School in Nicaragua this past January with 11 Cornell students for a service-learning trip. We stayed at the group study center, and every aspect of our trip, from our meals cooked by local community members, to our volunteer projects at the local school and nature reserve, to the afternoon Spanish classes was perfectly planned and...

Thank you for this review.....we are excited to work with an increasing number of groups of high school and university students from different places and with different interests. As you say, we plan the itinerary with each group to ensure that it fits with the needs of each group. We look forward to hosting you again!

Great teachers who flex the lessons around each student's age, interests, learning style and so forth. Excellent for families and children. Option to volunteer or to do activities each half-day.... Both options are great. Highly recommended !!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
La Mariposa is a small, friendly non-profit Spanish school and eco-hotel, just outside the small town of La Concepcion, Nicaragua. Only an hour from Nicaragua's major attractions - Granada, the Pacific Coast, the Laguna de Apoyo, Masaya volcano - and 45 minutes from Managua airport, La Mariposa is surrounded by organic coffee, banana trees and flower gardens. Our cool, green climate (we are 500 meters above sea level - makes a real difference to the temperature) is ideal for studying Spanish! Our conservation efforts - though small scale - have vastly increased our bird population, butterflies and even frogs! We offer intensive Spanish classes in our purpose built classrooms or in outdoor classrooms in our delightful grounds, full of tropical plants and rescued animals. Classes are mostly one on one (max 2 or 3 in a class) and we cater for all levels form beginner to advanced, including specially designed classes for children. We have an extensive library with Spanish study materials and a selection of books in English on Nicaraguan history, development issues etc. We organize a full week (that includes weekends) of activities, including cooking and salsa classes, classes on the history of Nicaragua and a weekly update of what is happening in the Nicaraguan news. These are delivered in Spanish to help with progress in Spanish and with English translation if necessary. On 3 afternoons and Saturdays we offer trips out to local places of interest as well as the Masaya volcano by night, the Masaya markets and artesanias, Granada, Leon, the Laguna de Apoyo, the Pacific beach, Managua, Catarina, the Pueblos Blancos and more! The trips are rotated on a monthly schedule. There are various accomodation options - Students can stay in the eco-hotel (ensuite rooms) or our eco rooms (cheaper). There is a also a large (en suite) family room. Situated about 5 mins from the main school/hotel is our nature reserve. There are now 2 cabins in the reserve, each with two bedrooms, seating area, shower and compostable latrine, private terrace and garden, small kitchen (though you can of course eat all meals at the main hotel) - these are ideal for families with kids who like a bit more space to run around! There are of course a few friendly rescued dogs to keep the kids happy!! We use solar power - for heated water in all of the showers as well as to provide electricity, conserve rainwater, have a number of recycling schemes and have started our own successful organic farm which provides some of the eggs, veggies, coffee consumed at the Mariposa. And much more. We use our income to maximise the employment of local people (currently employing 80 teachers, maintenance and kitchen staff) and undertake a number of projects in the local community. You can opt to volunteer at one of our community or environmental projects, living in a homestay with a local family. Amongst other projects, we are currently offering volunteer placements in the nature reserve, in local schools, with a day care project or with disabled children. You are also welcome to help out the Mariposa workers - whether feeding our rescued animals or cooking up our healthy meals. All of which is a great way to improve that Spanish! We have also recently opened, on another but close by site, a study centre specifically designed to cater for groups of students. We offer an individualized curriculum which can include Spanish classes, activities and classes on the history, culture and environment of Nicaragua. We can also arrange community service work for groups. Accommodation is in two eco built dormitories, each of which has 10 beds (bunk style). The eating/meeting hall is a lovely structure built of straw bales and thatched roofing. Classrooms face a terrace with great views of the Masaya volcano. Meals are always freshly cooked, often using organic veggies from our farm. And of course there are solar heated showers and solar powered electricity. ... more   less
