After having stayed in some fabulous B & B's, we were pretty disappointed in this one. It did have a nice size room (although we had the deluxe) but the most disappointing thing was the breakfast. We tried it twice and then gave up and started eating breakfast out. Nothing was very tasty. Very basic. Also their afternoon tea snacks...

My wife and I just spent a couple days in the George Washington room, a very large suite appointed with lovely period pieces as well as a classic four poster bed with a very comfortable Posturepedic mattress. A lovely breakfast was served each morning in the room with canapés and drinks in the afternoon in the wonderful upstairs lounge in...

We visited Charleston in late March. I selected John Rutledge House Inn based on location, reviews and historic nature of the house. We were not disappointed. Upon arrival we were given an overview of parking, amenities (food) and shown our room (Grand Suite on first floor by reception). The tea in the grand ballroom was a great way to meet...

Beautiful historic house. Lovely staff and everything you would need in comfortable rooms. Complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and evening port and cheese were an extra delight. Good location and easy to walk to everything. We only stayed here for 2 nights but wished we had more time.

Wonderful inn, staff is very informative and willing to help with any need. The rooms are very large, we have our own living room, so big we could have hosted a private party there. Bathrooms are very modern and they have a separate stand up shower and jet tub. Breakfast is good and plenty. I definitely recommend this place to...

My wife and I spent a few days in Charleston for a short get-away. We often look for properties on the "Select Registry" when we travel and this Inn offered us a great location from which to explore the city. The Inn itself is amazingly maintained and the suite room we stayed in was top notch. The staff was amazing!...

If you want to stay in the city in a historic inn, this is the place. The house is kept in amazing condition, as are the carriage houses in the back. The property is clean and very quiet. The staff at the concierge desk were always very friendly and helpful, especially Joseph. We would definitely stay here again!

A beautiful bed and breakfast. The house and rooms were amazing and the house is full of history. This bed and breakfast is on the south side of downtown but still a very good location. We walked everywhere. The breakfasts were good but not great.

After extensive research, my daughter selected the John Rutledge House for our lodging in Charleston, and we were not disappointed! Staying in this magnificent home was a treat beyond compare. From the four poster bed (main house, room 8) to the working fireplace, to the nightly turn down service, we felt pampered and special. Having the choice of breakfast in...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
