J D Wetherspoon is proud to welcome you to this stunning hotel. Here at The John Francis Basset, our 37 en suite rooms boast Freeview television, unlimited free Wi-Fi and digital temperature control. A warm and inviting pub forms part of the hotel, making The John Francis Basset a perfect stay for families, leisure or business. Camborne is best known as a centre for the former Cornish tin- and copper-mining industry, having its working heyday during the later 18th and early 19th century. Camborne was just a village, until transformed by the mining boom which began in the late 18th century and saw the Camborne and Redruth district become the richest mining area in the world. On Christmas Eve 1801, the Puffing Devil (a steam-powered road locomotive, built by Camborne engineer Richard Trevithick) made its way up Cornwall’s Camborne Hill. It was the world’s first self-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle. Within Camborne, Commercial Square has been pedestrianised, with trees planted and benches around the Victorian fountain – a popular local meeting place. Camborne is proud of its many independent retailers, where you can find wonderful local produce – pasties, fruit and vegetables, saffron cake and clotted cream, to name just a few. Camborne has a library and several museums, where you can discover a wealth of information about the town and the part it played in the industrial revolution.

Nice clean and tidy room with a walk in shower. We had no complaints about the standard of cleanliness in either the bedroom or the bathroom
As this is a Wetherspoon's hotel it had the advantage of being attached to a cheap dining room. The bar noise could not be heard in the hotel area

Booked online as the price was really cheap, we booked two rooms for New Years Eve and did not have a problem with the hotel at all, room was set up to sleep four so would of been fine with just booking one room. We were really impressed with how large and spotless the rooms were, they were also very modern. Beds were comfy. Could hear a little bit of road noise but that’s too be expected in a town. Food in the bar was good. Staff members were polite and friendly. Location was ok, close to St Ives.
Really happy with our stay and would definitely stay here again or in another Weatherspoons Hotel if they are all to the same standard.

Stayed two nights here used as a base camp for western Cornwall and had a good stay and the price was competitive for the area . No free parking here however free parking a 5 min walk away, you can also drop your bags if you park at Aldi temporarily opposite. Typically big clean bedroom with en-suite tea and coffee facilities handy restaurant downstairs in the large bar area. Had some problems on the Saturday trying to order long wait and the ordering app failed which nobody bothered telling us which was annoying
Overall decent stay though. Verdict- would return

Stayed for one night in early June. Free parking around the corner as it was a Sunday evening - good start! Twin room was huge and immaculate! Comfy beds that we easily pushed together to make a double, powerful shower, toiletries provided, view over looking a church, complimentary water, tea coffee and biscuits and allowed to bring food up to the room from the restaurant below. Aldi just across the road which was handy. All of this in a quiet location and an easy 20 minute drive to St Ives. Couldn’t beat it for the price!

This hotel has been a perfect base for us to explore Cornwall. Rooms were immaculate and the staff throughout the hotel and bar have been nothing but polite and helpful. From the minute we arrived we were welcomed and nothing is too much trouble. Rooms were 210 and 211 - spotlessly clean and so quiet on an evening. There is plenty of parking close by, can recommend the public one in Rosewarne a few minutes walk away. Food has been lovely and the lady working in the bar who has served us breakfast each morning has greeted us with the most pleasant manner, meeting all our dietary needs. We will definitely rebook here in future and would highly recommend anyone else to. Having spent many years in Travelodge and Premier Inn type hotels i would say the John Francis Bassett Hotel is far better, thank you to all involved in making our stay a safe and welcoming one 👍

About the hotel- So we arrived 30th August we had room 104 which is a ground floor room the room was very clean the bathroom was out of this world free standing roll top bath with lovely shower. Room got cleaned everyday which was very impressive can not fault any of that. Thing I am going to fault the road is very very noisy, you can hear everyone coming out of the spoons pub at the evening which wakes you up every night the bed is like sleeping on a rock and the room is so hot did have air conditioning but didn't work couldn't open window so was very uncomfortable the whole time of staying there so would recommend you ask for a room the left of the building away from pub doors and hig level so doesn't feel like you are sleeping on a road every night. This hotel great location for St Ives, lizard point, Minack Theatre and Newquay. THE PUB ITS SELF!!!!! Got to say disgusting the first evening we decided to stay in the pub for evening meal every table was disgusting sat watching a lad going round clearing dishes and glasses but not wiping tables and people were coming in sitting at them the staff didn't seem to care wasnt very busy so not really an excuse felt dirty the pint glass and wine glass disgusting the food was average on this evening. Second morning had breakfast seem a little better. The third evening decided to have evening meal yet again disgusting and the food that night was awful the steak my partner had I wouldn't serve to my dog my pasta Alfredo was cold and the chips had been redipped for sure we then decided not drinking or eating for the rest of the stay in this pub. I think the staff and managers need looking at this pub could be a great pub if had staff that actually cared I mean half of them didn't seem to know how to wipe a table shocking. I have got to say I don't think I would recommend a stay here or to go to this pub even though good bathroom and great location just not a very nice feel about the place. Parking if you do stay is about 5 min walk 2.60 if you park between 4pm and 9am free parking so quite good.

Hello, We're sorry for the delay in responding this review; we've been looking through our Tripadvisor account and we must have missed this one when you wrote it. It's amazing to hear that you enjoyed your room, but disappointing to read that the noise from the road disturbed your sleep and that the pub's standards weren't set high when you visited. For this we can only apologise. Many thanks Reception

We stayed one night in a huge room which was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The little touches of bottled water and locally made biscuits were much appreciated. Although the hotel doesn't have its own car park, there is plenty of provision nearby, including on-street at no cost. Being a Wetherspoons we were able to get an evening meal at a reasonable price and a full English breakfast in the morning. Our menu choices in the evening would be best described as adequate and nothing particularly memorable but nonetheless reasonable value. It would be difficult to find a similar breakfast elsewhere for anything like the price and unlimited coffee as well. This will be our hotel of choice on future visits to Camborne.

A late booking at short notice, this hotel popped up on booking.com.
£119 for one night, a couple and a toddler room only.
The building itself is beautiful, with a good history, no parking however, there is an Aldi opposite and you get 1.5 hours that’s ample time to get checked in and move the car, long stay car park about four minutes walk away for £3.
Enter hotel via the side entrance rather than Wetherspoons the pub entrance. Clean, had a nice atmosphere only problem here was no one on the reception. Pick up the phone and dial 0 to speak to someone at the bar who will then come and check you in.
Easy quick check in, pleasant staff. Lift to access. The hotel upstairs oozes elegance, thick plush carpets and wide hallways, heavy sound proof doors to rooms as were the walls.
Our room at the end was huge, in a ‘L’ shape. Huge bathroom with bath and separate shower, slow closing toilet seat and plenty of shelving around the sink for toiletries and make up.
Tea making facilities, biscuits, a lovely double bed with super comfortable mattress, feather down pillow and quilts, extra plush pillows. Good size tv on the wall at an angle and the sofa bed for our little one was perfect, almost the same size as the double bed, three huge old sash windows with extra glazing to keep the sound and cold out.
Air conditioning, huge beautiful lampshade. Plenty of lamps for mellow lighting, the carpet was plush and clean. Usual hairdryer, clothes hangers, iron and tea making facilities. Large desk and wardrobe.
We could smell the cleanliness when we entered the room.
Heard one door close around 11pm and it was very muffled, never heard a peep from anywhere else all night long.
Did hear the Aldi delivery lorry at 5am. Very faint rumbles of the cages which I could hear as I’m a light sleeper, nothing to be bothered about. Had an amazing sleep in the comfy beds, had breakfast down in the pub, usual basic but good Wetherspoons breakfast. Check out is contactless- pop your key cards in a box.
Could not fault this hotel, was wary when booking with it being above a Wetherspoons pub. Needn’t have worried. This beat the usual Holiday inn/premier inn stays. Lack of staff, but understandable at the moment. Saw one man in the morning cleaning the rooms. What a fantastic job he does, not a single hair, bit of fluff or anything else anywhere in the room. Loved loved loved it!

I stay regularly at the John Francis Basset in Camborne as THE hotel of choice for all of my visits to West Cornwall. The location is perfect, with mainline rail service, and an extremely efficient bus network enabling all parts to be reached with ease, even West Penwith.
The hotel is kept in tip top condition, the public areas and rooms are excellent showing no sign of wear, Rooms are very generous sizes, with all comforts and many have great views.
The staff are well trained and offer a genuine welcome and support during the stay. The hotel has it's own street entrance separate from the splendid pub downstairs, and there is no disturbance from that in the rooms.
In these days where businesses are cutting costs and providing less value for money this hotel stands apart providing comfort and quality at a great price with no corners being cut. It is one of Wetherspoons very finest and in my experience the best run.

A group of four us us stayed in the John Francis Basset hotel whilst we did the Rat Race Man Vs Coast event. The two twin rooms we had for two nights were great, especially how much cheaper they were than practically EVERYWHERE else in Cornwall. We tried booking places nearer Penzance, etc. but they were just soooo much more expensive than this hotel.
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful which made for a nice experience.
The hotel is connected to a lively Wetherspoons pub, which can be accessed via a separate outside door or a room-key coded door right next to the bar. The bar is loud as you'd expect, but once you're in the hotel section, you don't hear any noise at all and it's very relaxing. I can't remember hearing a single noise on either night when we were in our rooms.
We'd happily staying in this clean and tidy and reasonably priced hotel again.
