Marlborough is a gem of a place to visit and the Castle & Ball has so much potential. Part of the Old English Inns group, it is quaint, old and full of character, but could be so much better. Rooms are clean and comfortable but tired and a bit scruffy. Service is ok but not outstanding. Breakfast is ok but...

The Castle & Ball is ideally located in the centre of town. Our room was a decent size, the bed was comfortable and the hotel has a lot of character. The food was excellent, too. We dined in on Friday evening, taking advantage of the "upsell" offer and enjoyed an excellent meal, served by friendly staff. We were also impressed...

We hadn't stayed here for years and our stay this time was a mix of very good and very bad. Carrying a heavy case up more than thirty stairs was back-breaking, but not much they can do about that when there is no other way up! Our room was very stuffy, due, we think, to the large heated towel rail which...

This was my second stay at the Castle and Ball and in the year since my first visit there seems to have been a change of policy regarding service. My room was in the annex, a surprisingly quiet room in spite of being next to the car park. It was also a fairly large room with the added comfort of...

This is a busy high street pub/hotel. The rooms are separate from the pub itself. The pub is popular and friendly. The food is good pub fare. The service is attentive. The rooms are slightly dated but charming. They are large and the bed was very comfortable. We were in Room 3 which is not a good room as it...

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. Room 3 is a great room for guests who may have walking difficulties, especially with the large walk in shower, but you are welcome to discuss which room you would prefer and we can allocate that for you. Thank you for the compliments about the food and staff, I...

Needed a hotel for a couple of nights in Marlborough. The Castle and Ball is situated in the middle of the High Street with a good size car park behind it. You'd expect a building originating from the 15th century to be quirky and the C&B is certainly that. Don't expect to silently tip-toe across to the en-suite in the...

We visited this establishment for a very specific reason. To say that we felt let down and disappointed does not even begin to cover our feelings. The room was okay on the whole. Everything else was not really. Such a very great shame.

Good old Fashioned hotel, right on high street. Good parking. Has a restaurant & bar. It's a free house so plenty of beer & lager choice. Friendly staff.Room 20 has a 4 poster bed & balcony over looking the high street. Room 27 is on the top floor with no one next door. The only downside was squeaking floor boards.

Thank you for your review, the squeaky floorboards is something we are trying to do something about, however it is proving to be quite a task, so may not be corrected in the near future. Thank you for your compliments about the staff, they alwys enjoy comments like that.

What a great stay we had with our dog Rafa, excellent pet-friendly hotel, staff were brilliant, very friendly and helpful! Bar area lively and friendly! Situated in the middle of the town, handy for exploring this lovely little town. We will be back.

Thank you for your lovely review. The only downside having guests bring their dogs is that it's very hard to get the staff to do any work because they are all dog lovers! I've been informaed that Rafa was very well behaved and is welcome back anytime (you too!)

We had a long weekend stay here and it ticked all the boxes as we were looking for a relaxed and comfortable hotel with good food. We booked a 'superior' room and stayed in room 15 which looks out over the main high street. There was surprisingly little noise from the high street by the way! The room was spacious...

I agree that it is surprisingly quiet in the rooms over looking the High Street, plus you get the lovely view of the town. The bathrooms are next on our list of updating, which I hope won't be too far in the future. Thank you for your lovely comments, I hope you will think pf us if you plan another...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Extensively refurbished early 2012 and situated on Britain’s widest high street, The Castle & Ball has had a fascinating past dating back to the 15th century, with some of the original oak timbers pre-dating the Spanish Armada. The building’s age accounts for some individual features including the splitlevel brasserie-style restaurant. The hotel’s walled Beer Garden at the rear provides a relaxing setting for those looking to enjoy a drink and a meal alfresco-style. ... more   less
