Whatley Manor is a grown-up getaway in the heart of the Cotswolds with sustainability at its core. We fully believe we can offer our guests a wonderful experience whilst also being ethical in our operations, to be a force for good at this defining time for our planet. We wish to encourage our guests to come along on our sustainability journey with us. We hope our eco credentials and the whole setting, cuddle you from the moment you arrive. We have made many positive changes, for example, you won’t find single use plastic in our bedrooms and we have challenged all of our suppliers to vastly improve our local supply chain and reduce their packaging. We have also achieved Zero to landfill. Above all we have worked hard to bring the team on the journey with us and implemented training programmes to help. Set in 12 acres of gardens with 26 distinctly different areas there are plenty of reminders for us to preserve our own corner of the planet. The 45,000 strong bee colony help us with this! Dine in the more laid back setting of Grey’s or in the refined One-Michelin Star restaurant The Dining Room. Some Spa time is also a must. The oak gates slowly open as you approach Whatley, and from that moment onwards the pace is set. Relax and recharge in style, safe in the knowledge that Whatley is doing its bit to reduce the impact we have on the environment.

The hotel's amenities, including its sumptuous spa and exceptional dining opportunities, also receive frequent praise. Visitors feel truly valued thanks to the professional and friendly service.
Nestled in a picturesque setting ideal for country strolls, the hotel is appreciated for its charming location, although some guests note the pricing to be on the steep side. Hotel's Favourite
Looking for a big birthday treat we eventually decided on Whatley Manor and were so glad we did. A three hour drive from London, the minute you turn off the road onto the elegant driveway it's a cossetting, luxurious experience. The theatricality of the front gate opening as you approach, your luggage whisked up to your room while your car is parked for you and the charm, friendliness and efficiency of the staff is impeccable. Sue in reception gave us a wonderful warm welcome and proved to be a life saver when I realised I'd forgotten some essential medication. Michele the manager was charming and hands on when he saw his staff were busy. The room, we had a suite, was immaculate, I couldn't find a nick of chipped paint or spot of wear. Comfy beds with great linen and pillows. When friends from Norway sent me some champagne Michele arrived with it himself. Whether eating in the lounge or Greys Restaurant every need was attended to, and when I asked if some champagne could be set up in one of the many public seating areas it was attended to instantly, with Andrew ensuring there were extra logs on the fire. The Swiss ownership is evident in the organisation. They must trigger your arrival for breakfast ( great array of choices and fruit juices ) as on returning to your room it has already been cleaned and serviced. Rachel, Bori and Hamish are remembered amongst so many staff whose names I never discovered. Maybe name badges ?
The spa and massages added to the weekend, as did walking in the grounds, which despite the garden being in its winter hibernation were lovely, with a stream at the bottom and a bird hide with binoculars on hand.
After three nights we felt so at home it was sad to leave and when that lottery comes up we intend to go for a month ! Thank you for making a significant birthday so special. And for that tasting menu that capped off the weekend in their Michelin star dining room, you must read my separate review. Each tiny dish a work of art with delicious flavouring. They even make their own chocolates !

Desperate for someone else to cook we booked a suite and dinner in the Dining Room for Whatley Manor's first night of re-opening, we had visited a few years ago and always wanted to try it again. This is a lovely spacious house and we found it easy to spread out in our room, in the drawing rooms downstairs and especially in the gardens. All the staff were wearing masks and there is hand gel everywhere including in the bedrooms.
We made use of toasted sandwiches, G&Ts and beer in the drawing room in the afternoon, we wandered the gardens, we drank the sparkling wine and ate the goodies in our suite. We had a very relaxing time.
Dinner in the evening was absolutely gorgeous, honestly the food is amazing although they could have served me a platter of the bread and butter and I would have been happy. I wasn't so sure about the eel and it turned out to be a favourite! We too were seated in the smaller dining area and we really didn't mind, the food is so lovely, the wine flight was great and the waiters were so friendly and enthusiastic despite the masks which must hamper them a little. I highly recommend the whole experience.

Great hospitality, restaurants, spa, grounds & service. As another reviewer has commented the staff are warm & attentive. There appears to be a good team spirit & happy atmosphere. We ate in both the hotel restaurants, fantastic Michelin starred dining in one & quality brasserie food in the other. I used the lovely hydrotherapy pool & really liked the heated stone recliners.
One of the Covid 19 precautions is that no one enters your room during your stay which we liked as you have more privacy. When we did require some more tea bags & body wash they were promptly delivered.
The hotel is set in beautiful countryside near the Fosse Way. The reception has some walking maps of various routes. We did the longest one which according to the map takes about 2.5 hours but we did it in a bit less than that. The only problem was that the first & last few minutes of the walk meant walking along the main road which was a bit busy in the afternoon.
However the hotel is so amazing it's a bit crazy to leave the gates.

We are talking to our neighbors and very much hope to get access over their field so we can keep our guests off the road. Fingers crossed. Kind regards Sue W, GM

Cost £260 a night pre -paid/non refundable in the country. For this price I can get a very good hotel room in central London with a cancellation policy up until 12 pm on the same day
This is not a cheap hotel. We ordered gin and tonic and a glass of bubbly. I would expect to get the gin in a proper gin glass and the bubbly in a flute. The G&T arrived in a normal straight glass and the bubbly arrived in a normal wine glass.
Dinner menu limited & two of the items only being available for between 2 & 4 people. Our meal was adequate but nothing special.
The odd glass theme continued when I ordered a grappa which was served in a small wine glass and not the correct grappa class. When I queried this they told me they didn’t sell enough to grappa to buy the correct glasses. A glass of grappa here costs £14, which is the same cost you can buy 6 decent glasses on Amazon.
I know the glass saga may seem petty but this is an expensive and supposedly upmarket hotel. They should at least have the correct glasses to serve their extremely expensive alcohol in.
Never mind at least I could go down to the spa in the morning which my book told me opened at 7 am. I popped down at 7:35 for a quick swim before breakfast to find it closed. When I checked with reception they had changed the time to 8 am and hadn’t changed in the room info. Not good enough and apart from anything else 8 am Monday - Friday is far too late to open.
Breakfast was good and freshly cooked to order.

Our first visit to Whatley Manor (the first since lockdown) and I freely admit I didn't think places such as this still existed. A dedication to guest happiness and comfort within an elegant modern setting by a friendly and welcoming team.
Given the current virus based situation it was clear from the first moment we entered reception that every reasonable care was being taken to ensure guest safety both in terms of the practical aspects of this but also so removing any lingering worries one may have - thank you for that.
We stayed in a double aspect junior suite overlooking two of the 19 gardens and terraces. Very comfortable and spacious with sunset coming through the wide windows. The grounds are well kept and, given the restricted levels of staff available for maintenance of the gardens they have done an exceptional job. Most of the grounds are fully accessible.
Breakfast and casual dining in the brasserie worked well, friendly service and interesting dishes. The Dining Room restaurant is of course something different and was totally worthy of its Michelin accolades. Nial Keatings team produce outstanding food and given that eating out well in starred restaurants is one of our hobbies it lived up to every expectation.
In every way an excellent long weekend and one which shall be repeated at some stage soon.

What a very kind review, thank you from all of us on the team. It is such a pleasure to hear how the magic of Whatley effects our guests on a first visit, with our familiarity of the house we do not always see it. We will keep looking after out lovely house and team until you can make that return visit to us. Best wishes Sue GM.

We visited Whatley Manor for afternoon tea on Wednesday 16th June for our wedding anniversary.
We had a booking for 2pm and arrived on time. We were seated and given tea while we waited for our sandwiches and cakes. We didnt realise we had to scan the barcode on the table for the tea menu so just asked for a tea that we could remember, so didn't see a tea menu.
The cakes and sandwiches took 30 minutes to arrive and by then we had finished our tea so had to ask for more of the same as we didn't know what else was on offer and wasn't given any verbal options.
The sandwiches were nice and the cakes lovely, however we had a problem with the scones.
They were hard on the outside and doughy inside, we were unable to eat them, we did try but they weren’t edible for us. We spoke to the waiter who went to the kitchen and spoke to the chef.
He came out and told us that the chef had not changed anything, and this was how they always were. We have been to Whatley Manor on a number of occasions for afternoon tea and they have not been like this before.
We cut one open in front of the waiter who agreed that they looked doughy he went back to the kitchen with it. When he returned, he said again that they chef had said that this is how they were and that he did not accept that they were not cooked inside. They were overdone on the outside and not fully cooked on the inside and we did not eat them.
This was the end of the discussion as the chef would not agree that there was a problem, I felt sorry for the waiter as he was caught between the kitchen and the customer and the chef did not want to come out and talk to us.
We left feeling very unhappy and disappointed with our afternoon tea and the conversation that had occurred. The chef seemed to be of a mind that he could not have made a mistake and that the customers opinion did not matter. We have never complained before.
Also on entering we were not asked to sanitise our hands and just walked through, we did sanitise our hands at the table with our own product. The last time we came we had our temperatures checked and were asked to sanitise and given cloths.
Obviously, things have changed since our previous visit and in our opinion not for the better based on this experience.

Just came back from a one night break and it has been the most amazing time.
From check in with valet parking, it makes you feel special to checking out and having luggage taken care of.
Food in greys was gorgeous, everyone needs to try the cookie dough!
All the staff were so friendly and helpful!
One of the best aspects was how clean they kept everything with the recent worries everyone has.
You could always see staff disinfecting the hand rails and everything people touch which was amazing peace of mind!
Faultless from start to finish, will definitely be returning!!

We had a two-night stay with dinner at Whatley Manor in September 2020. The hotel has beautiful gardens and a swimming pool, as well as large lounges and garden terraces. There is even a small private cinema that can be booked by guests, complete with popcorn. Our room (11) was excellent, with a comfortable bed, a powerful shower and a nice separate area with desk, sofa and TV. I measured internet speeds at 24 MB download and 54 MB upload, which is respectably quick, and the service was reliable.
The hotel has taken good Covid-19 precautions: staff wear masks, guests are asked to wear masks in the public spaces of the hotel. There is ample hand sanitiser around and tables in the dining room are widely spaced, with menus single use and also available via QR codes. I don’t think there is much more that they could really do in terms of precautions. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout.
The restaurant has two Michelin stars, and there is a separate brasserie. Whatley Manor is a lovely place for a short break in the Cotswolds.

We had booked for March but Covid stopped those plans. We decided to be supportive and leave our deposit with them and re-book after re-opening. We had eaten at the restaurant before and so we looked forward to an amazing weekend away.
The good stuff:
The buildings are beautiful and the grounds look stunning. The setup of the spa was very good. The food in Niall Keating's restaurant was amazing and the drinks room for before meal is really stylish.
Sadly, we were left a bit underwhelmed by the hotel.
We stayed for two nights in a suite costing nearly £900 per night with meals . The room was large, but the decor felt like a real mix of 'average' hotel that looked lost in the space. During this time, there is no service to the room. We had to request 3 times to get something that was not in the room, eventually only getting a response after going to the reception to follow-up.
We found ourselves trying to work out what we could do rather than experiencing the kind of hospitality you expect at this level. As an example, we wanted to enjoy some drinks in the garden at sunset, but had to wander around for 5 minutes trying to see how we could organise that.
They charge an optional 10% service charge on your total bill. I've never seen this before at any hotel. If the service is amazing it would be fine but asking people to pay a service charge for a room that can't be serviced during your stay is a bit too much, especially when the general standard of service didn't feel exceptional.

A "mixed experience" is not what we wish to hear, so sorry you felt service a bit lacking. The reduced room servicing is a mixed blessing right now, but one the Gov guidance has steered hotels to adopt. But there it stops, we must stop blaming Covid and keep attentive to the little details. Thank you for your review and please be sure we will never be complacent and keep aiming high. Kind regards Sue GM.

Firstly, there is no question that the food at the Dining Room is absolutely outstanding and some of the best we’ve ever had. If this review was just based on this restaurant this would be an easy 5/5. However, the hotel itself was not up to expectations and the price we paid.
The check in experience was pleasant however the first issue was that due to staffing issues, we would not be given daily housekeeping (we stayed for 2 nights). Given the price we paid for the stay, they should allocate more money to paying housekeeping staff rather than for profit. The room itself was a bit dated, basic and strangely decorated with a tiny television, but the biggest problem was the noise from upstairs until the early house of the morning due to no sound proofing - this was really irritating.
Finally, we politely asked for a late check out, just one hour, however we were informed quite bluntly that this was not possible at all and sent on our way. There was no offer to take our bags, or a suggestion to stay at the spa, just a very rude way to approach a customer. Upon check out we were shocked to find an additional service charge applied to our entire bill - we were quick to query and it was removed after some debate however.
In summary, amazing restaurant, lovely grounds, fantastic spa and mostly nice staff - but not what we expected from a five star hotel charging premium prices.

Dear E M Kemp, in response to your question above. We have been members of both Marketing initiatives for many years and both have great merit. R&C is a costly initiative to be a part of and as they are an international marketing body, we felt it was going to be jolly difficult for them to drive any international guests to us for the next couple of years. I am very melancholy about the brand as I have work in the family of Relais for 30 years and I know it to be trusted but this was the moment to change our marketing activity for a while. Who knows what the plan might be in a few years time, it could be all change again. It does not reflect any changes in the levels of service at Whatley, far from it. We really hope to see you again soon. Thank you for your enquiry. Sue W, GM

It’s a spa pool not a a swimming pool but you swim around in circles
It’s a brilliant spa with outdoor pool and indoor pool areas and jets all over. Enjoy.
Yes it has been renovated and it is wonderful. The new spa is stunning and the rooms are lovely . The new Green Room( I think) restaurant is a great addition for a snack , the other 2 restaurants remain excellent
