In the world of hospitality, there are a few unexpected places in which timeless European flair, cultured style and Old World courtesy are vibrantly alive. The Mark Spencer Hotel garners praise for its clean rooms and charming atmosphere, with guests often highlighting the stylish decor and comfortable ambiance. While the hotel's central location is consistently lauded for its proximity to local attractions and convenience, some guests have noted issues with noise and lighting in the rooms.
The amenities, including kitchenettes and a popular wine hour, contribute to an enhanced stay experience. Although the majority of travelers are delighted with the friendly service and find the hotel to offer great value, a few have encountered lapses in housekeeping and service.

We stayed at the Washington Plaza Apartments, the sister hotel, which had their entrance around the corner from the main entrance and front desk.
The suite was clean and tidy but a little Spartan, but we weren't there for the decor. There was a full kitchenette with a fridge and freezer, microwave and electric stove, plus dishes, cutlery and a couple of pots. The bed was large and very comfortable. We had a leak from the base of the toilet (nothing nasty) and when we reported it it was fixed that same day while we were out. The front desk staff were extremely helpful. I needed to use the on-site laundry (also clean and tidy) and they were able to make change for me and sell me a package of detergent, and when my partner had a dress seam give way, they provided a sewing kit so we could fix it.
The downtown location was a few short blocks from a number of places we wanted to visit, and we discovered that the TriMet streetcar to the airport was a fairly short walk from the hotel, and cost us less than 5 dollars between us - a huge difference from the 60 dollars US we were charged by the taxi that took us downtown.
Overall, it was a good experience and I'd stay there again.

First, the bad. Our original room was just above a Pride street festival that ran Fri., Sat., and Sunday nights from 5-ish until midnight with pounding electronic music throughout those evenings. After the first night, we asked for a different room and were given one as soon as it was ready. No fuss, no muss.
The staff were great, the room (king bed with a kitchenette) was sizeable, comfortable, and quite nice. The bar fridge had a small freezer that was so full of frost that the door was frozen open and we would have had to defrost it to get it working properly. Similarly, the bathroom vent (there's no actual fan) was fairly dirty with accumulated fluff. However, those are minor issues and we'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
The daily rate for this hotel was affordable and the location put us right in the heart of downtown so we could walk everywhere quite comfortably. They also had a Happy Hour with crackers, cheese, and a few wines to choose from each day from 5 - 6. We did not use the exercise room or the coffee shop next door, but they're there for next time.

This is a very comfortable hotel with staff who go completely out of their way to make a tired traveller feel very comfortable indeed. My corner room was huge and comfortable with everything I needed capped off with the most comfy bed I've slept in for weeks and fully working A/C [weirdly not a given these days]. Kitchenette was handy. Wine and cheese a delight. The hotel is close to Powells, has good transport connections and food choices near by.
The staff they were great. Well starting with the man who came to the cab to get my bag into the hotel. Check in itself was efficient and friendly. The cleaner always greeted me and the guy who served wine and cheese coped with me. Advice from the front of house staff was useful - especially that from Anthony.
Well recommended.

The Mark Spencer Hotel must be one of the best hotels for the cost in Portland. For what we paid (under $100 in late January) we couldn't have been happier. I've paid twice that for hotels I was half as happy with. The room was clean and mostly new and in great condition. We appreciated the garage underneath the hotel for only $32/night (better price than most hotels in the area and much safer than leaving the rental car on the street). And the service here was great. Kind of an old school feel, not cold and modern, but charming and cozy. Appreciated the wine & cheese hour and the fancy restroom in the lobby. We'd stay here again.

I loved the hotel for its location downtown, within walking distance of several restaurants that were recommended to me. The room was lovely and SO QUIET, you'd never know you were in the downtown of a city based on zero noise while inside the room. Bed and bedding were high quality and the products provided by the hotel were also high quality.

Nice hotel in a great location, surrounded by the Pearl District with it's shopping and a large selection of restaurants. We booked a Master Suite room since there was 3 of us. It is one of the largest rooms in the hotel. Booked it with a prepaid rate which was a great deal. The nicely appointed suite had 2 rooms with a large king bed and a sleeper sofa in the living room. There is also a small kitchenette. The king bed was very plush and comfy. I would have given the hotel a 5 Star rating if the mattress on the sleeper bed was more comfortable, it was pretty bad. Bathroom was small but very nice. One thing they should point out, is right now, they don't have daily cleaning services, but they say you can get fresh towels perhaps from the front desk. We stayed only one day so it didn't matter to us. Overall a great experience.

Wifi is the worst I’ve ever experienced. Only pockets in the room get a little WIFI, it disconnects constantly, and the speed itself is very slow.
In 2024 WiFi is one of the most important things I need. I had to work from the room and it was basically not possible. What exactly am I paying for?
The rest of the room was fine although the bed is extremely soft, so warning to folks who like a firm mattress. The folks who work here are very sweet

I really like the fact that the lower part of each window could be opened in such a way that rain would not come in. I just turned the AC off for the whole stay and enjoyed the fresh air. Microwave and empty fridge were also handy as was the nearness of Whole Foods. I could keep my own healthy life style on this trip.

Ever since Covid hit. I have been looking for accommodations that give me a little more space for times when I might feel more comfortable getting takeout. I knew that would be especially true after an over 10-hour drive from the Bay Area when we just enjoyed our takeout Nong Khao Man Gai in PJ's while watching Coco on the big screen TV.
Trying to find that while being centrally located ended up being a bigger challenge than expected as I noticed so many of the rooms available in most of the hotels, I was interested in were really small.
Mark Spencer ended up meeting my requirements perfectly, offering a range of rooms from the smaller standard to larger suites to choose from. For only a $40 per night difference, I went for the executive king suite which has a private bedroom plus a living room with a fully equipped kitchen offering dishes, a couple of pots, microwave, and a small stovetop. While we didn't actually cook, I did boil some hot water often for tea and took advantage of those real dishes and real utensils and replated our takeout or leftovers. It probably saved us close to the $40 per night not wasting our leftovers while reducing food waste.
I loved that they offer a discount on the parking fee for hybrids. My only complaint was the spaces in the parking garage underneath the hotel were quite small so may be a challenge maneuvering if it is full and we did get blocked with an unattended construction truck at the garage exit. Luckily, we were not in a hurry.
Because of Covid, they have discontinued their continental breakfast and afternoon tea and cookies but with so many great options around, it is not a huge inconvenience. They are centrally located just a block away from Powell's City of Books and another block from there to Screen Door's new Pearl District location and so many wonderful restaurants and even a Whole Foods to pick up local Stumptown coffee, chocolates, and jams to bring home.
I would definitely choose Mark Spencer again the next time I find myself in Portland.

Yes it is. I felt comfortable walking around. The area is very clean, no trash on the street, no homeless that I could see. I have to admit, from what I seen about Portland, I was a little apprehensive about staying downtown, but the location of the Mark Spencer is like staying in a different world. There were some great restaurants around the area. Jake's famous crawfish, McMenamins, Cheryl's on 12th. There is a cute little wine shop around the corner on 13th called Pacific Northwest Beer & Wine. If you don't mind walking, there is a great place called Von Ebert Brewing that we ate at. It's a great little area.
6:30a.m. until about 10:00 AM (not sure about the exact end time whether or not you can take food back to the room). Some guest rooms have kitchenettes, and the breakfast area has plenty of seating.
There are more places to choose from in the Portland area.
