I stayed here for 4 nights in mid-Nov, and must say that I was very impressed by the quality and location of HI Northwest Portland. I stayed in a private en suite, so caveat that my review may not be the most representative of your average stay here. Everything was clean, functional and pleasant, from the comfort of the double bed to the cleanliness of the bathroom. The shower used Hansgrohe faucets, which I found pleasantly surprising and high-quality where hostel facilities are concerned. The room was spacious as well, with a good-sized work desk, two armchair sofas, and two bedside tables. The Hostel Cafe was also wonderful, with a decent selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner options - my personal favourite is their grilled cheese sandwich with smoked ham and avocado - it's so good! (I've heard great verdicts on their salmon burger, but I personally found its spicy aftertaste a bit weird. That's just me, though!) I didn't try their complimentary breakfast bagels as I wanted to check out some of the cafes nearby for the full Portland experience, so I can't really comment on that aspect. For those of you who seek good breakfasts beyond the Hostel Cafe, however, I would recommend Byways Cafe (which is just a 6-min walk away down on Glisan St), and the Daily Cafe (a 10-min walk away in Pearl District).

In terms of the location, it's also right in the centre of all key attractions: walking distance to the Pearl District, 23rd Ave shops + restaurants (where you can find Salt & Straw, Blue Star Doughnuts, and a couple of excellent eateries at very reasonable prices, such as 23Hoyt), Washington Park (where there's the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden), Powell's City of Books, and the Brewery Blocks (where there's Whole Foods, Lululemon, West Elm etc.) If you don't mind a 30- to 40- min walk from the hostel, you can also get to the Portland Art Museum and Oregon Historical Society in SW Portland, as well as the Lower Macleay Park entrance of Forest Park in upper NW Portland - all by foot. All you need is Google Maps, a well-charged phone, and a pair of willing legs!

If there was any 'con' at all to my experience of staying at HI NW, I would say the soundproofing could have been a bit better. I'd often hear loud stomping from above and next door, and even the slightest noise outside in the corridor would reverberate quite strongly. I'm not sure what the best remedy to this is, but should the hostel consider another round of renovation, perhaps management should consider thicker/more soundproof walls.

On the whole, though, I highly enjoyed my stay at the HI NW Portland Hostel. Mind you, the private room isn't cheap by hostel standards, but compared to normal hotels (3 to 4-star ones), I'd take a private room at this hostel any day. Also note that you'll probably have to email / contact the hostel directly to book private en suites, which is what I did after not seeing any en suite options on their website or on Booking.com.

This hostel might be the best alternative to a chain hotel/motel. The place and staff are well organized and efficient. The private room we got was in the next house an old villa with a great charm. The room was super clean, shared bathrooms equally. The café offers a good if not great breakfast, is open til midnight with a nice choice for dinner/beer. Outdoor seating in the front and back made it easy to meet other guests in the evening chatting over a beer. We stayed only one night unfortunately but got so much out of our stay and so loved it all. We could join Megan's from casual Art Walk though the Pearl District. So much fun! And next day we found everything so close by we walked where ever we wanted to go to, like the Rose Garden. Not to be forgotten: The car parking was also made easy and safe.

Stayed with my wife for 2 nights; very helpful staff, great patios and food/beer options available. They had nice community events during the week as well, which were great. It's a few blocks from the train line; not a bad walk at all, and with so many options nearby, we never felt we needed a car to get places.

I stayed at the Hostelling International Northwest Portland Hostel on a recent trip to Portland. They were conveniently located for my needs and reasonably priced. Mine was a private room in a converted house with several shared bathrooms for the building. The staff was incredibly helpful. The hostel has a great common area including a cafe/diner that is open late and serves good food.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced place to stay close to the Pearl District this is definitely worth considering.

Great hostel run by great people, from the reception all the way up to the owner. Lovely cafe attached to hostel. All was clean and the cafe has a great vibe, with nice big windows. Would be back in a heartbeat :)
