I love the Great Room with long tables, library/lounge, and the cafe that are all part of the lobby where you enter and check in. Less fond of the tiny rooms that have no chair, no bedside table, no furniture at all except a bed that fills the room, and no bathroom of your own. Odd to pay $200 plus to use a common bathroom off the hall (do not leave your key in the bathroom in the middle of the night or you'll be locked out of your room). Location in the Gorge is wonderful. Be sure to use the beautiful spa with hot tub|cold tub|warm tub|sauna. The latter is the reason I'm giving four stars instead of three.

The affordable community experience is admittedly fun in concept, but consider carefully. This option is not really cheap either. When one gets to a certain age, the concept of slumming in a hostel, even a somewhat chic one for hipsters, may seem somewhat questionable, when one experiences the unexpected difficulty of removing or putting on one’s trousers, while in the confines of a bunk bed. To get dressed properly, you would need to navigate down the steep ladder, without spraining your ankles, breaking your neck, or waking up your bunkmates. Once down, you then realise that you’ll need to go up the ladder and back to your bunk again, because you decide that you would really need to put on your socks, because you feel uncomfortable having your bare feet touching the carpet shared by dozens of hipsters or hippies, never a good idea. Once you managed to put on your socks, you then negotiate the scary ladder down again, and then go up a set of stairs within your suite to reach the individual private bathrooms, where you can get dressed or washed up, standing up. Admittedly, these rooms are cleaned and maintained quite frequently. However, when you’re all done with whatever business you have in there, you’ll still need to go back down the stairs and up the ladder again to fetch your wallet or bag or whatever back in your bunk. At that moment, it wouldn’t be odd when one starts to question where one has made the wrong turn in life to get to this point.

Lovely, quirky hotel. Staff were exceptionally friendly and the hotel bar was a pleasant place to eat or drink. The area has plenty of character! Rooftop garden was nice. Room itself wasn’t huge but was big enough and was well equipped, comfortable and nicely decorated. Shower was big and powerful.

I stayed here solo for a couple of nights over a few days while my son was recovering in Shriners...the price was right. I did not experience the complaints that others experienced however, I booked a queen room with shared bathroom, and I loved the experience. One of my friends laughed and said I'd paid for a prison cell BUT my spin is Poe meets Bronte...kinda a boardinghouse vibe with great common spaces! The cafe is wonderful and delightfully tasty non-alcoholic and alcoholic libations.....their Sage Old Fashioned was $12, minimal, and wonderfully worth every penny! The rooftop is really a retreat BUT I felt like they let people in off the street enjoy it....as in buy a coffee and you can tie up a table for the whole day kinda deal - a couple of houseless people made their way up there and were kind enough to comment on how beautiful my top was in a way that made me leave and go to my room...and I'm a pretty tough lady but I wasn't up for dealing with two males off the street. That made it difficult for guests to find a nice spot up there. The neighborhood has become rough and full of houseless individuals sleeping on the sidewalks, in the street and everywhere in between....it breaks my heart considering what it was just 10 years ago - but that is not the fault of the hotel and they seem to do what they can to provide to offer good security including 24 hr staffing, and key-card entry. I will definitely stay again!!!

In the neighborhood lots of homeless. Proximity of tram and bus is ok. ROOM The room was clean, simple. My room was pretty small, one could barely sit on the floor. My colleague had a more spacious room, they were really nice. SLEEPING I did not have trouble sleeping. The airco was on the loud side. But My room was on the back side of the hotel so no noise complaints form my side. SERVICE The people were very friendly. TOILET& Bathroom I took a room with shared bathroom. The bathroom was clean and spatious. Only remark there: The water pressure in the shower was much too low. This is probably for eco reasons, but it was so low that i took me much longer to wash my broad shoulders (lol). I think putting it this low is contra productive. Breakfast The breakfast was very limited (yoghurt or eggs if i remember correctly) and I did not feel very welcomed on a table that wasnt reallyu washed and my plate stuck to it. It had to do because it's also a BAR The bar is cosy. No idea on the price point. The bar also had a terrace on the roof of the hotel, which was a good place to sit when the sun was shining. WOULD I go again? It was my first time in the states, so for me the amount of homeless people surrounding the blocks of the hotel really was eye-opening. I'm quite convinced my wife would not dare to go outside of the hotel alone. But she's a scared one. Can the hotel help this? No. But they're doing a great job for hotel guests to give them a clean place to call home.

I am currently staying at this hostel and upon arrival was told my card was declined for a $50 deposit I was never informed about. I laughed and explained that the card didn't have money on it for that and handed him $50 cash, which then he said he required $100 deposit. Mind you, this is more then my stay for two nights! The beds were so uncomfortable and hurt my back AND when I asked the host about the roof top patio, he wouldn't answer my question. On the website it says that you can stay for up to 14 days and upon check in the front desk clerk told me I could stay for up to 7 days. The website and the staff are clearly not on the same page and was overall disappointed with my experience. I have another day here, but I can honestly say the other two hostels in town have provided a much better experience.

Horrible customer service. They straight up lie to you. There is no amenities at this HOSTEL. It's awful, smells, and they have bed bug problems. The neighborhood is also very high crime area. So better to look elsewhere.

First of all I have to say that this hotel is doing whatever they can to remove my reviews from different platforms. Which clearly suggests that they do not deserve your money. This hotel should learn some customer service. When you wrong somebody, you try to do your best to fix it instead of trying to remove reviews! Absolutely unreasonable management. They did not honor the reservation because one of the guests did not have a passport, although the person who made a reservation had a valid ID that he presented upon arrival. They asked us to leave in the middle of the night after driving for hours. The crazy part is that the housekeeping manager refused to issue us a refund, but instead offered us a gift card??! I obviously have no intention of ever staying anywhere near this place. Note to the upper management: teach your employees to think outside the box. It can be pretty helpful in order to avoid similar situations in the future. We are still expecting our refund! And stop trying to remove my reviews. They will simply reappear again!

I loved my stay at The Society Hotel. Upon arrival I was a bit alarmed at the amount of homeless people living in tents nearby, but I had done extensive research before booking and knew this was the case. However I was never bothered by any and this is not the hotels fault. The staff was great, I did leave my do not disturb sign on my door my first day, but not my second, unfortunately it didn’t get cleaned the second day, but it wasn’t a huge deal and was probably just about timing on my end. The cafe was an awesome spot to hang out and the oat milk lattes were amazing. I stayed in a suite, since it had my own bathroom and it was so serene and minimalist, which is just my style. I had everything I needed! My absolute favorite part of my stay was my time spent on the rooftop. It had a gorgeous view of the city and heaters which was amazing with the fall Portland chill. Bringing up a sangria from the cafe and enjoying with a book on the roof was amazing! Definitely recommend, and for sure staying again!

I was not informed that despite the website saying guests were allowed that I would be hassled every time I attempted to go to my room for an ID for me and all the people I was with. Making my night a living hell by forcing me and my friends to have to get another hotel that didn't hassle us every single time we enter the building. Stress free was not the environment by any means & will definitely be recommending tourists away from this joke of a hotel.
