Really nice hotel - you can tell they took a historical building and renovated it to look sleek and modern. The rooms are very clean albeit a little pricey considering you don't have your own private bathroom - there's a shared one in the hall that you use. Bathroom is very clean as well. You do have your own sink in the room which is nice. Room is overall a little on the pricier side considering how small it is but hey I guess the location is what you're really paying for as this place is in the downtown area and very close to a bunch of places and next to the public transport station. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly and I love the fact that you can text them for assistance!

I loved my stay at The Society Hotel. Upon arrival I was a bit alarmed at the amount of homeless people living in tents nearby, but I had done extensive research before booking and knew this was the case. However I was never bothered by any and this is not the hotels fault. The staff was great, I did leave my do not disturb sign on my door my first day, but not my second, unfortunately it didn’t get cleaned the second day, but it wasn’t a huge deal and was probably just about timing on my end. The cafe was an awesome spot to hang out and the oat milk lattes were amazing. I stayed in a suite, since it had my own bathroom and it was so serene and minimalist, which is just my style. I had everything I needed! My absolute favorite part of my stay was my time spent on the rooftop. It had a gorgeous view of the city and heaters which was amazing with the fall Portland chill. Bringing up a sangria from the cafe and enjoying with a book on the roof was amazing! Definitely recommend, and for sure staying again!

I was there for a three night stay. I loved the staff! Their incredible warmth and willingness to accommodate me were unusual and very welcoming. The room had everything I needed with a comfy bed and great shower. Walking onto the elevator each morning, I was greeted by the smell freshly brewed coffee. The cafe offered a range of coffee drinks and teas as well as interesting made-to-order plates and bowls. Everything, including the fireplace, made my stay a lovely experience.

I was not informed that despite the website saying guests were allowed that I would be hassled every time I attempted to go to my room for an ID for me and all the people I was with. Making my night a living hell by forcing me and my friends to have to get another hotel that didn't hassle us every single time we enter the building. Stress free was not the environment by any means & will definitely be recommending tourists away from this joke of a hotel.

I originally booked for two nights but I ended up extended for a total of five nights because I enjoyed the accommodations that much.

Lobby, check-in, and cafe downstairs were all beautifully designed and welcoming areas to hang out or study. I loved the fireplace and living space. Wifi was great!

Staff: Everyone on staff was wonderful and welcoming; however, Candace and Branson were people I had the most contact with and it was always a good time. From Candace always being available to help me with navigating the neighborhood and hotel to Branson giving me tips on Portland, chatting about life and fulfilling my caffeine needs, I loved getting the chance to know them. They definitely sealed me in for additional days and were a big reason I felt so comfortable throughout my stay.

The Rooms: My first two days were in a King suite with a private bathroom. I was in the room deigned by Peter. It was comfortable, quiet despite the locals living it up outside, and roomy. The rest of my stay was in a Queen room with shared bathroom. I was concerned about having to share a bathroom but they are large, extremely clean and have comfortable and convenient amenities. I slept so well in every room I booked. There might be something to this no technology in the bedroom "myth". I liked the minimalist approach to hotel stays and appreciate the added luxury feel with the bathrobes. Little things like a robe really elevate the overall experience in hotels.

Cons:
No formal parking but there is plenty of street parking and much of it is free. Private security in the community keep a good watch on vehicles.

A con that is not the hotel's fault is the unfortunate state of Old Town and it's displaced and struggling locals. They didn't bother me when I was outside but it was sad to see other human beings in those conditions. Be safe walking around the area as some can be unpredictable or in distress. Like with any city, especially downtown areas, just be aware of your surroundings.

Overall, The Society is on my list of Portland favorites and I will be returning for future visits.

It is so cute with a little cafe downstairs. They have coffee, fancy-ish beverages, cocktails, fresh baked goods and other snacks. It's really a one stop shop.

We stayed in one of the rooms with a shared bathroom and it was great! There are 3 bathrooms on that floor and I never felt like I was fighting over one.

Everyone was absolutely lovely and very helpful! You also feel really secure because you can only enter the hotel with a key card or if staff let you into the building!!

I am currently staying at this hostel and upon arrival was told my card was declined for a $50 deposit I was never informed about. I laughed and explained that the card didn't have money on it for that and handed him $50 cash, which then he said he required $100 deposit. Mind you, this is more then my stay for two nights! The beds were so uncomfortable and hurt my back AND when I asked the host about the roof top patio, he wouldn't answer my question.
On the website it says that you can stay for up to 14 days and upon check in the front desk clerk told me I could stay for up to 7 days.
The website and the staff are clearly not on the same page and was overall disappointed with my experience. I have another day here, but I can honestly say the other two hostels in town have provided a much better experience.

First of all I have to say that this hotel is doing whatever they can to remove my reviews from different platforms. Which clearly suggests that they do not deserve your money. This hotel should learn some customer service. When you wrong somebody, you try to do your best to fix it instead of trying to remove reviews!
Absolutely unreasonable management. They did not honor the reservation because one of the guests did not have a passport, although the person who made a reservation had a valid ID that he presented upon arrival.
They asked us to leave in the middle of the night after driving for hours. The crazy part is that the housekeeping manager refused to issue us a refund, but instead offered us a gift card??! I obviously have no intention of ever staying anywhere near this place.
Note to the upper management: teach your employees to think outside the box. It can be pretty helpful in order to avoid similar situations in the future. We are still expecting our refund! And stop trying to remove my reviews. They will simply reappear again!

The affordable community experience is admittedly fun in concept, but consider carefully. This option is not really cheap either. When one gets to a certain age, the concept of slumming in a hostel, even a somewhat chic one for hipsters, may seem somewhat questionable, when one experiences the unexpected difficulty of removing or putting on one’s trousers, while in the confines of a bunk bed. To get dressed properly, you would need to navigate down the steep ladder, without spraining your ankles, breaking your neck, or waking up your bunkmates. Once down, you then realise that you’ll need to go up the ladder and back to your bunk again, because you decide that you would really need to put on your socks, because you feel uncomfortable having your bare feet touching the carpet shared by dozens of hipsters or hippies, never a good idea. Once you managed to put on your socks, you then negotiate the scary ladder down again, and then go up a set of stairs within your suite to reach the individual private bathrooms, where you can get dressed or washed up, standing up. Admittedly, these rooms are cleaned and maintained quite frequently. However, when you’re all done with whatever business you have in there, you’ll still need to go back down the stairs and up the ladder again to fetch your wallet or bag or whatever back in your bunk. At that moment, it wouldn’t be odd when one starts to question where one has made the wrong turn in life to get to this point.

I love the Great Room with long tables, library/lounge, and the cafe that are all part of the lobby where you enter and check in. Less fond of the tiny rooms that have no chair, no bedside table, no furniture at all except a bed that fills the room, and no bathroom of your own. Odd to pay $200 plus to use a common bathroom off the hall (do not leave your key in the bathroom in the middle of the night or you'll be locked out of your room). Location in the Gorge is wonderful. Be sure to use the beautiful spa with hot tub|cold tub|warm tub|sauna. The latter is the reason I'm giving four stars instead of three.

Yes they give you a towel, a locker, white linen on the bunks and it’s cleaned daily. I couldn’t fault it for shared accomodation

Do have a laundry machine & parking place?
Answer from SocietyHotelOps
Portland, Oregon
We have a loading zone out front of the hotel, where you can park as we get everyone settled in, for overnight parking our guests park @The Smart Park Lot which is located 2 blocks away on 1st and Davis. There is no guest laundry onsite, however the #4 bus stop is around the corner and that bus will take you to an awesome laundry mat called Spin Laundry Lounge! We hope that helps!
