Considering this place is on the lower end of the price spectrum, I was very satisfied with the product that I received. The room was clean and cozy, though a bit outdated. There was a large desk for me to do work on. The bathroom was clean and functional. Water pressure was strong. Location was perfect for a trip to Portland—close to bus, tram and streetcar stops, also within walking distance to downtown and several food truck pods. One criticism I do have is that the sound proofing is not better. I can hear my neighbors’ TV and they were not watching it at an obscene level. And doors being slammed from next door and the lower level could’ve be felt inside my room. Also the room vibrated when large vehicles would pass by. I would definitely book here again in the future when I return to Portland.

My son and I took the Amtrak Empire Builder to Portland. I mention this because- this is a great hotel to stay at if you take the train. There is plenty of public transportation to get around and to the hotel. It is set away from the downtown area that seems a little sketchy. It was very clean and a nice location near the PSU campus. I have not stayed in an Econolodge in some time, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This hotel was very clean, the staff was very kind- letting us check in a bit early to shower and clean up after 2 days on the train. I really like how the floors are laminate not old dirty carpet. This hotel has had some upgrades and it shows. Definitely recommend this to visitors of Portland and especially those taking the train who want a safe, clean nice stop over.

Late at night check in, the night staff guy was super nice, friendly, and courteous the rate was good and the room clean and completely unexpected to how nice it was! So glad we picked this spot and will now be the hotel when I come back through... only down side is the parking lot is a little small and kinda sketchy but he let me park in the back so I could back into it to tuck it out of the way! Again probably the best service I’ve had from any hotel staff member!!!!

Not fancy on the outside but the inside upgrades are great. Love the new “wood”like floors, comfortable beds, refrigerator and big rooms. Food trucks, Portland State and streetcar are all nearby so you can get anywhere in the city easily. I will ne back!

Cleaning left a bit to be desired (seen worse but I have also see a lot better) Beds looked good even felt nice at first but it was really rough sleeping on it. 4 days almost to long and the breakfast was okay the first day or two but nothing changed. The in room coffee was not good at all but the coffee in the lobby was great. Was charged extra for a safe in the room every day and this was for a safe I did not use or ask for nor did they inform me in advance that it if it was in the room their would be an extra charge. And Portland your room tax it way to high.

Response from Rita P, General Manager at Econo Lodge City Center
Responded 7 Oct 2019
Hi Paula L, I am not sure if you have the right property. We are the Econo Lodge City Center by PSU. We do not have a safe in any of our rooms, therefore we would definitely not be adding an extra charge to your bill. I do agree that the Portland taxes are quite high. The city and the state tax ends up being 15.3%.

We were there for three days, but on one of the days the shower had no hot water. We asked if we could shower in one of the empty rooms and they turned us down, all they offered was that we could check out and find another hotel. The included "breakfast" is a joke, white bread and a few bananas. The room was almost impossible to sleep in; either too hot and stuffy with the A/C off, or too noisy with the A/C on. We ran out of tissues and asked for more but they did not have any. Average bed quality.

I travel 3 hours away every year for a concert in downtown Portland, went to checkin at 2:38 was told to come back @4 came back @4 room was still not ready. We had to wait in line for our concert and had to leave our luggage and purse in our car because our room was still not ready. Never had a check in time of 4pm and on top of that they knew we were there since we went to check in at 2:38 so why was the room still not ready at 4. When we finally was able to get into our room and sleep, housekeeping was knocking on our door @ 10:30 to tell us it was time to check out and clean our room. For $171 I would have expected a room ready at check in or givin a room that was ready

Small shabby room, albeit clean. Very bad odor. Breakfast is minimal. Location is not exciting but easy access by car and public transportation. Left after a few minutes due to general feeling and especially the bad odor (can't describe the odor). Thats all i can say based on such a short stay.

This hotel was a huge disappointment. We went in not expecting much, and it was far worse. There is an additional parking fee, making this price closer to far nicer hotels. The WiFi was not working when we arrived. The room was fine and fairly clean. Unfortunately every time a large vehicle drove by the room shook, making sleep difficult. The continental breakfast was meager. I grabbed two sealed chocolate muffins for my wife and myself. When I opened one in the car, the top was covered in mold. Neither package had a date on it, so I can’t know if it was past that.

the owner manager was obnoxious. worse than unhelpful. when I arrived around noon, he informed me that check-in time was 4pm. I was attending a convention at the hilton which had no more more rooms. I explained I could not return at precisely 4pm. after much discussion he finally consented I could return AFTER 4pm but REFUSED to allow me to leave my bag with him. He was rude and arrogant. So, I had to trek 15 blocks to the hilton with my bag, and later to dinner at the art museum with my bag.-- portland oregon is a hilly town with no taxis! I am 69 yrs old and it was horrible to carry my bag all day. also, TSA had taken my toothpaste lotion and shampoo conditioner at the airport. I wanted directions to a pharmacy. the nice lady (not the wife of the mgr, she was apparently a univ student) at the econolodge desk that evening when I returned, offered to prepare map and bus directions and leave it for me up front. But, the obnoxious owner/manager guy next morn informed me he had thrown that away, had no interest in helping me get to a pharmacy or figure out the buses! Overnight, construction across the street woke me up with demolition at 3:30am. crash boom, metal, wood blocks falling. But, obnoxious guy informed me if I had a problem w that I could call the police myself. He had no concern for people trying to sleep at econolodge. but people at another construction site advised me that city ordinance forbids work before 5am. so, our manager could have complained on our behalf and made the construction wait until 5am. I was required to pay upfront both nights room charge when I arrived. but never received a receipt. I was supposed to receive a little refund because I was put in queensize instead of kingsize. the neighborhood seemed pretty safe because it was a university area. but there was nobody at the desk after 10pm and the obnoxious guy would never have helped us anyhow. he was an Indian guy but I never got his name, no card, and I think I saw his wife too, I think they live onsite behind the door leading to the front desk. THE ATTITUDE OF THE MANGER RUINED MY IMPRESSION OF ECONOLODGE and he should NOT be allowed to keep his job the facility is clean and well kept but the customer service was the worst I have ever experienced in a hotel --and I travel all the time--he did not want to provide ideas how to get to the airport, much less help with that, he assumed no responsibility for anything and was rude and mean
