The first room we were given had two windows, one without a lock. The room was warm so we wanted to open the window which anyone could have stepped right into from the parking lot. The second room was upstairs. All seemed fine except a lightbulb that was out. The desk clerk gave me a replacement. Then just before going to sleep I noticed a bug on the sheets... and then another and another. Yes... bedbugs. I was out of that bed so fast you wouldn't believe it.
My husband was just finishing a shower and it was nearly midnight. There were no other hotels in the area and we'd had a long day. So the only choice we had was to move to a third room. This one was fine. It appeared to be clean and had a nice kithenette, but also had a light out. Unfortunately the phone and wi-fi did not work in this room. I needed to make arrangements for the remainder of our trip and this was why we chose a hotel rather than camping for this night of our trip. (The following night we DID camp in a tent and had a much better experience than staying at this hotel.)
So I had to use my laptop in the lobby the next morning and use their phone too. After calling Rodeway Inn customer service after returning home, I did get an email from the manager of the hotel offering to let me stay free for one night on our next visit to Portland. I declined. Then I heard nothing back from him and called customer service again. They sent me a check refunding my stay, but it took awhile for this to happen.
Any hotel can get bedbugs and it is a real problem that needs immediate attention. That attention seemed to be lacking here.
That said, for the right price it's certainly more than tolerable. The rooms were relatively comfortable, free wifi worked well, cable TV selection was not bad and the reception staff friendly.
Downsides: housekeeping seemed particularily inept/lazy. 3 days in a row our room wasn't made. The first, admittedly, was probably our own fault as we didn't leave the room until after 2pm. However, the following days we left the "Maid Service" sign on the door, which was ignored. When queried with reception, we were told housekeeping had noted it as a "Do Not Disturb" sign. I'm pretty sure we would have used that option should we have wanted it.
So yes: it's in a slightly skeezy area, it's old, and (some) of the staff can't be bothered to do their jobs..but for a low, low price you have to cut slack in some areas.
Continental breakfast was coffee and a packaged danish, cloth shower curtain was moldy, under the white paint was mold. The shower head needs to be replaced. End of day one.
Day two.
I left before 8 am and was gone all day. When I returned, no housekeeping had been done, no clean towels, and the bed was not made. Also, this hotel is in a bad part of the area. I paid $63.00 a night but would not stay there if they literally paid me.
Pros: Friendly staff.
I’d like to preface with …. I’m not some high rolling high maintenance girl… we are on a road trip and we have camped… I have used some really rough porter potties… slept on the ground… slept in my car at rest stops…
We did NOT sleep here…
Maybe we should have turned around when we got flicked off by a couple of people that almost t-boned us and then proceeded to flip us off when we turned onto the road…
This… was a hotel from a bad movie… as previously mentioned it does share a parking lot with a strip club… we really needed a place to sleep for the night we were on a road trip and it was my birthday (currently still is my birthday as I’m writing this review)
I tried to discard the fact that it was next to a strip club and quickly check in and get to my room so we could sleep and then continue our drive towards Washington.
Once we got into the room I couldn’t even walk on the floors barefoot… the floors felt so gross. I didn’t take a shower because I felt like taking a shower in that shower I would likely come out dirtier than I was when I got in.
I’ve been in old and cheap hotels but this one takes the cake for being the only hotel I ever just left and took the $100 loss. We decided to just book a hotel a couple hours north and just drive further.
It does feel very unsafe, when we came down to check out there was no one at the desk but there were several sketchy characters in the parking lot…
I honestly don’t think there’s much hope for this hotel to be any better than it is, I should have read the reviews that was my only mistake it certainly matches every description that I read in those reviews… being next to a strip club and as old as it is….
We left the key cards on the dresser and left. We only stayed for about 30 minutes, long enough for my 12 year old to try and take a shower but he could never get warm water.
Again- as mentioned in the other reviews the lady at the front desk was so kind, happy to help us with everything and anything we needed as far as linens- she maybe needs to be at a hotel in a different location… with better house keeping.
The so-called breakfast was not even ready until 8:45am even though its supposed to be at 6:30am. I can't believe choicehotel chain allows such poor service.
Thank goodness it was just one night. I booked the hotel because it belongs to choichotel chain and it's value and location. I will not stay here again. This is our only and final time to pick this one. Don't be fool by its pictures, apparently it fooled us. We took lots of family road trip during the summer and always had a wonderful stay with lots of hotels. But this is the worst of all by far. If you don't care about the service and cleanness and just looking for a cheap place to stay, this is it. Otherwise, don't go there. I wished I had listen to other travelers.
I called the hotel to question why I was being charged a fee when I had spoken to a worker earlier in the week to cancel my reservation. The employee that I ended up speaking to on the phone (after being transferred between two other people first) proceeded to tell me that I in fact did not ever call to cancel! I said yes, I called on Sunday morning, to ensure it was before the 24-hour cut-off so I would not be charged a fee. She repeatedly argued with me and insulted me, saying she did not believe me and that she was the only one working that day so she knows I did not call (and that she was too busy to even talk to me then). She also asked why it took me so long to contact the hotel when they waited all day for me to show up...I called the hotel the same day I got the email notifying me that there was even a problem! When I asked to speak to her supervisor, she said she was the manager and I couldn't talk to anyone else. I told her I would be taking further action and she hung up on me.
My husband drove over to the hotel to deal with the issue in person and ended up dealing with an entirely different male employee. He was slightly more helpful, but not by much- he did at least discover the original note about my cancellation, which means that female worker was simply too lazy to do any research of her own to see that I was not lying. The male worker was also very rude and tried to give my husband a major run-around as well to paint the picture that nothing could be done. But after my husband spoke to a representative from booking.com, the male hotel employee finally issued us a fee refund. What a headache! When we are in the Portland area in the future, we will definitely not be staying at that Rodeway Inn & Suites!
