Great hotel with all the needed necessities. Rooms were small but styled nicely. Could have used a coffee maker in the room. Hotel has a lot of character which added to the experience. Could have done with a coffee maker in the room. In a central location, in close walking distance to a lot of places
From the moment I arrived I felt welcomed and valued. Joel and Scott at the front desk are rock stars! Super friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The meetings team knocked it out of the park. Erin, Casey, Stephen were phenomenal and Chef blew us all away. Can’t wait to come back when the restaurant reopens. Big rooms. Wonderfully decorated! It’s in a great location too. Walkable to everything. Give it a try. You’ll be happy you did!
The care and consideration of the Management and staff was on point and surpasses any other Hotel I've stayed at. Attention to detail and devotion to go that extra mile making our stay exceptional is what you can come to expect here. This place has tremendous style and left a lasting memory for us.
The hotel itself is a nicely renovated historical building with an old world feel with very neat eclectic furnishings and wall coverings. Restaurant Hours: If you have hotel spend credits (via Amex Hotel Collection or other programs): The staff, although very friendly, seem to be completely new and in training. I booked via the Amex "The Hotel Collection" via my Amex Platinum card, which gives $100 credit once per year for bookings via their portal. They didn't even tell me that the restaurant would be closed for breakfast on Monday mornings for breakfast. They were also closed on Sunday evening. Apparently they are also closed for dinner on Monday and Tuesday. I didn't realize this until Monday morning (the day I was checking out), and the only option they had to fulfill those credits were some $4 granola bars, overpriced potato chips, or Oreos. Staff couldn't give me permission to let me look at other items they have in their "marketplace" but later found a menu, which I purchased a $15 bottle of wine for $50. Would have been nice if the staff made it clear that the restaurant was only open during particular days. Perhaps I'll reach out to American Express to see if that aligns with Hotel Collections' policy, otherwise it almost sounds like a bait and switch if you're not even able to use the credits for multiple days per week. Room Service: Apparently you have to inform the staff if you want your room serviced, which I understand many hotels are now doing. However on one of they days when I asked for housekeeping, they only dropped off a stack of towels in my bathroom without doing anything else. Then, on another day they serviced the entire room when I didn't even call in for housekeeping. Again, perhaps a training issue. Overall: Overall, I'd say this is a mid-tier hotel. By no means does it deserve to be one of the top rated hotels in Portland and by no means should it be included in the Amex "The Hotel Collection" hotels. There are certainly hotels in Portland with better services and facilities than the Royal Sonesta. Also, Portland is going through tough times and the particular location of this hotel is not ideal with a lot of scary people in the streets. Ideally, the hotels up on 11th and 12th St or on the other side of Pioneer Square are located in safer areas.…
I can't say enough good things about the Royal Sonesta Downtown Portland or its staff. I'll never stay anywhere else while I'm in Portland. I picked it because it looked cool and funky, a lot homier and less sterile than nearby, similarly priced options. I stayed in a King Suite; it was spacious and very comfortable, and the decor was awesome. Business brought me back to Portland less than three weeks after my first stay, and while I loved the room, it was the service that brought me back to the Royal Sonesta a second time. My parents were with me the first time, and the staff just could not have been nicer or more accommodating. For example, my mom needed a walker, so they loaned her one, and offered her the use of a wheelchair too, both on-site and while we were out and about. I want to single out Karla in particular, who went above and beyond both for my parents and for me. She was super friendly and kind; she made the first stay a great experience for all of us, and made me feel at home the moment I walked in the door for my second stay. 10/10 overall. I will definitely be back!…
The staff treated us like royalty!!!! Bijou, Karla, Kristin, Stephen, Cody, Maia at the front desk, Jennifer. Pete and Jack in the restaurant and bar; Soeehmoo, Hto. Adrian at the valet parking; Jeremy., Tricia and Jack. Bravo to a team of folks who made us feel at home!!!
Had a wonderful time at the Royal Sonesta. Karla at the reception desk is a treasure and the type of employee that most owners imagine when they dream about their place operating smoothly and creating a welcoming guest experience. I wish the big beautiful windows would open, but I guess that is out of their control so you can’t dock them for that. Also, Shakespeare is also a true original at the restaurant and he even has a few inspired sonnets up his sleeve if you ask him nicely.
Californians suddenly dropped into Portland on family business and steered to the Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown, we had little leisure to see the sights or find good food, let alone “fine dining.” But fortune smiled on us – Finch on Fifth, the full-service restaurant and bar connected to the hotel, welcomed us for dinner with friendly service and luscious food – a luscious burger and delightful Ahi tuna (plus fine wine) in an attractive, upbeat setting. Coming back for breakfast next morning we enjoyed outstanding French toast, bacon, juice and coffee. Jennifer Welch, who makes the place go, is a sweetheart – personable and funny, knowledgeable and kind, motivated to make sure the food and the vibes are both the best. We’ll go back for another great meal before we return to California tomorrow.…
I seldom write restaurant reviews, but this establishment deserves a shout out. We stumbled on this place, as we were guests at the Royal Sonesta. Jennifer, was our server. What was to be a quick tapa before our dinner reservation turned out to be a entertaining night. Our server made for a five star experience and rocked out a collection of memorable libations for our table. Jennifer is a valuable asset as dining out is ultimately about the experience. A five star experience we received indeed! Keep up the good work!
The Royal Sonesta in Portland is Ecclecticly Fantastic! Erin, Monica, Karla, Damian, Stephen, and all the other staff were amazing and gave us the highest level of service. The suites are very roomy and comfortable! We catered a dessert fellowship, and 3 meals and were blown away at the amazing quality and quantity of the meals and desserts! They far exceeded our expectations at every level. The Royal Sonesta is a perfect Portland hotel. Everyone had such a great time and great service, and it's a great location if you are going to be downtown. If I host another event downtown, I would not hesitate to go back to the Royal Sonesta.
