My wife and I just back from a lovely couple of days at the Old Rectory in Talyllyn. I've stayed in the area a number of times over three decades, and the Old Rectory without doubt has the prime location in one of the most beautiful and majestic settings in this part of Wales. You could probably while away a...

We are dead cuffed to hear that your train driving experience on The Talyllyn Railway was such a success and that you found our accommodation to be first class and Ricky's hot steaming food was just the ticket. If you ever need an away day again you know you can always beat a track to our door - we know...

We loved The Old Rectory! The welcome and hospitality throughout was warm and friendly - John gave us local tips and even kindly helped us reach the starting point for our hike up Cadair Idris. The B&B is a great base for walking, with the start of one of Cadair's trails a 10 minute walk along the lake. We stayed...

We are so glad Charlotte that we proved to be the ideal base for your overnight adventure up Cader Idris, the mountain behind our home. You are the first guests ever to book a room for a night, then spend the next one on its slopes and then return to us for the third to celebrate with an evening meal...

We chose to return to the Old Rectory for a special birthday having loved staying there some years earlier. Our stay could not have been bettered. John and Ricky's marvellous hospitality, local knowledge, amazing food and the beautiful location all added to a brilliant, memorable occasion.

A small gem in a beautiful setting. My brother in law, sister in law, and my wife and I were fortunate to have dinner at the Old Rectory on the Lake recently. The evening was a great success with very good food, properly cooked and well presented. The lamb was excellent, as was the salmon, and the vegetarian roulade. Service...

Hello Stephen from Tal-y-llyn and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your evening meal last weekend. Thanks for these very kind comments about what we try and offer our diners here. We look forward to welcoming you again in June but sadly without The Elderly Brothers, who no doubt will have a gig elsewhere that night back home in...

We returned to The Old Rectory on the Lake after discovering its idyllic setting and John and Ricky's delightful hospitality 7 years ago. We have been talking about a return visit for a while so I took my partner there for a 3 night dinner, B & B, birthday treat at the beginning of April. Dining was superb with imaginative...

It was an utter delight to be part of this fantastic love story. We think you are the tenth proposal we have had at The Old Rectory on the lake since we came to Tal-y-llyn twelve years ago. Many, many congratulations and we wish you both all the best for the rest of your lives together. So pleased you said...

John and Ricky offer a wonderful homely experience in this idyllic location. The food is outstanding and all our whims were catered for! The room was very comfortable and I loved the attention to detail with a gorgeous Welsh mills throw over the bed that I wanted to steal!!! Thoroughly enjoyable, thanks John and Ricky! Everything you could ever wish for in a B&B. The rooms have a majestic view of the lake, and Ricky cooks delicious meals for both breakfast and dinner. John made us feel very welcome and made our first weekend away together a really enjoyable experience. I would recommend this place to anyone :-)

Never have two guests done everything we suggested during their weekend stay! Well done for walking to Barmouth over the wooden railway bridge and then going on the sandy beach, travelling on the Talyllyn Railway, climbing up to the Dolgoch Falls after traversing the iconic Precipice Walk. Then, just for good measure on the day of your departure, you walked...

The Old Rectory on the Lake is a complete gem of a hideaway. It calls itself a B&B but it is very much more in the amount of care and attention that goes into making your stay special. The owners John and Ricky are a fabulous team. John provides jovial warmth in his tales and knowledge of the local area...

My husband and I stumbled upon this amazing place through Google. What a find it was. The idea was to climb Cadair Idris on my husband's birthday. However, looking at the weather forecast that week. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Old Rectory on the lake has been overlooking Tal-y-llyn, in south Snowdonia for over a hundred years. This imposing residence stands on the foothills of Cader Idris and offers five star luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation in a stunning setting. It is the ideal base for the discerning visitor to explore this particularly quiet and unspoilt scenic area of Wales. We are equidistant between the bustling market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau and the delightful coastal village of Aberdyfi. The Old Rectory on the lake has three double letting rooms - all ensuite - and all look out onto the lake. Our bathrooms upstairs were described as being 'outstanding contemporary ensuites' by the Visit Wales inspector when awarding us five stars.Already our culinary reputation is beginning to spread - indeed we have even been mentioned by name in The House of Commons during a debate on Welsh produce. Our chef can cater for any dietary requirement. The Old Rectory on the lake is licensed. We suggest that this is the ultimate place to unwind; the scenery is breath taking and the silence deafening. All our beds have crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and freshly laundered fluffy towels are in every bathroom and also in the sauna and out outdoor hot tub area which - like most of our windows - looks out over the ever changing Talyllyn - enthusiastically penned in our entry in Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay book as ' large, lovely and luminous'.We look forward to perhaps welcoming you here very soon. ... more   less
