I stayed here on the way to Durham. It's a beautiful and historic house in a beautiful place. Unfortunately it's also a really good reminder of what British hotels were like in the 1970s and 1980s. Readers of Bill Bryson will know what I mean. Interesting? Certainly. Comfortable? No. the public rooms are interesting and 'in-period', even spectacular, but the...

The hotel is large, owner-occupied and run with a skeleton staff. Much of the maintenance work has been done in-house over the years and it is beginning to need renewing. Our room had been refurbished using a fairly broad-brush approach to decorating, and the shower did not work. We stayed here twice, one night on a journey north, and three...

Superb hotel, Anne & David are very warm and friendly and passionate about their home, and welcome you into it with open arms. As a family with a young child we were slightly aprehensive about staying at such a lovely place, but we were pleasantly surprised. We had an amazing family room and at meal times were greated with a...

This grand, mainly Georgian, building has been decorated in a traditional and elegant style. There are many original features - fireplaces, a Portland stone cantilevered staircase, coving, etc. It is spacious and had everything we needed, including lovely views over the ground. It was, however, very cold; the heating was not turned on until quite late in the day and...

We arrived at 1830 as I advised, no heating had been on in our room early enough to warm it. No heating at all in the bathroom. Bathroom door stuck on opening. My meal was a disaster, particularly based on the price. I had Chill Con Carne, I have bought better in supermarkets, just minced beef on a bed of...

Things were impressive as we drove down the massive long drive with mature trees and cut lawns. The old hall must have been magnificent in its heyday. The owners are rightly proud and we were shown round the various downstairs rooms which were filled with antiques stuffed animals and pictures of horses and hounds. The rooms were tastefully decorated even...

When we first arrived and entered the hotel I was greatly disappointed. I thought it would be different. Quaint, historical, charming. It did become that after an hour of settling in. Our room was the biggest disappointment. It probably hadn't been upgraded since the early 70's and the shower was appallingly in need of repair. But as I said, after...

What a lovely hotel a true hidden jewel. If you want to stay somewhere different this is the place to go with amazing value for money. The decor is a bit dated which ties in with the hotels atmosphere perfectly like a time travel machine. The staff are all lovely and approachable. The views were absolutely stunning the bed was...

The hall sits well back in it's own extensive grounds and on opening the front door the first thing I saw was the needlework stating ' welcome to our home ' and this is how we were treated . We were met by Santi who showed us round the hall and explained it's history before taking us to our room...

Last minute booking. Impressions when booking online that this would be a nice place to stay. What a mistake that was! Nice drive into the place through tree lined road set us up for a fall. Room we had booked turned out to be outside the hotel in one of the outbuildings. In other hotels that might have been okay...
