Went for a lads golf break. Course was excellent, bar was good, food service was good for both breakfast and evening meal but the rooms are awful. Mine had no heating and the TV wouldn't turn on. Very dated and drab. When I first saw the hotel I thought this looks lovely but overall I wouldn't pay to stay here with my wife. Golf trip yeah, romantic weekend no....

We came to stay for a friends wedding and were told on arrival we had been given the 'skylight room'. When we said this sounded great, the receptionist quickly allayed our excitement by telling us it was a room with a skylight and no windows, nothing posh about it. So, when asked if there were any other rooms available we were told we had this as it was 'the last one left'. Baring in mind the wedding was August and we booked in May. This 'last one left' ridiculousness aside, the room was disgusting. This went for the bed which was obviously VERY old and now on a slant, the pillows which must have been an inch thick and the awful musty smell which came from the skylight 'seal' and the fact that the bathroom had no ventilation. Apparently these rooms had had an 'update', we knew this as there was still electrical wire all over the floor and bathroom surfaces. When I complained about the fact that we literally didn't sleep and at the state of the room, the receptionist said 'sorry, that was the last room, there is nothing we can do'. This made the experience even worse. I was told to email on Monday when a manager would be back in. I did that on the Monday and got a swift response from a member of the team offering us a complimentary bottle of wine if we booked another stay! This was obviously rebuffed immediately and no one got back to me with any solutions for 3 weeks. When they finally did, they told me they had had a 'board meeting' and decided that all we were entitled to was 50% off our stay because they had supplied us with bed and breakfast. This was not a discussion, it was a statement from Oliver (the manager) that this was their resolution. We did not receive the service we paid for and the 'management' are entirely unreasonable. They could not justify their decision morally nor ethically. Below is their response to my concerns... "we have corresponded with you on numerous occasions to try to come to a satisfactory conclusion and although you were not satisfied with the room, we did supply a service (bed and breakfast) in full which is why we have offered 50% refund of your accommodation" 1) They did not 'correspond' - I have had emails from 4 different people with no idea what they are doing. 2) The best bit about the place was the breakfast, I even offered to pay for that and nothing else but apparently if they supply a 'bed' (which is disgusting) then that's all they need to do. From reading other reviews it would seem there is a wing of the hotel that should not be used. How can they justify using this 'room roulette' and customers all paying the same amount? We would never return here.

Booked the spa afternoon which included 2 hours in the spa, afternoon tea and a 25 min massage, £84 per person Spa: Positives - Spa was clean and quiet - treatment room for the massage was comfortable and smelt lovely - the back massage was very relaxing - the lady on reception at the spa was helpful and showed us around the spa, and then escorted us to afternoon tea Negatives - decor in the spa very dated - only one changing room so you had to wait or strip off in front of other people (which I understand some people are ok with this but not me personally) - showers tatty Afternoon tea: Positives - we were given a table with two comfy chairs by a window overlooking the golf course in a classic lounge - cakes plentiful and tasty - the very slow service allowed lots of time for me and my friend to catch up Negatives - took the best part of 20 mins to get tea and starters - after 30 mins of waiting we had to get up and ask at reception for the sandwiches and cakes as no one had come back - sandwiches were “meh” at best - apologies offered by the waitress, excuse given was “someone didn’t turn up for work and I’m managing the restaurant, bar and you” - no refills of tea offered, we had waited so long we’d drank the one pot between us, no soft drinks offered either - after picking at cakes and sandwiches and realising the waitress probably wasn’t coming back as she said she would we left -could overhear all the conversations at reception from our table including one where a guest was complaining about a smell of wee coming from their bathroom I have no idea what was going on in the restaurant today but it really soured the whole experience. I probably won’t be coming back.

Wow wow wow! We came for my mum’s 60th birthday and Steve, the operations manager, could not do enough for us! He is the nicest guy and so fun to be around. He was totally great with the kids, patient with all our orders and changes! Thank you Steve, you made our night perfect! Rooms were great, reception staff lovely - no complaints at all from start to end - all staff extremely helpful! Did I mention we LOVED Steve?!

Stayed 26th - 29th July 2022....great golf course in a superb location, easy to get to from Liverpool or Heysham as we travelled from the Isle of Man. The food every night is top quality and the girls in the restaurant looked after us every morning and evening...thanks girls from the lads from the Isle of Man !

We had our wedding here last Saturday and what an incredible day it was. From start to finish, we could not fault the staff and the venue. The staff worked tirelessly to make our day perfect. Nina and Loren were super organised and attentive which put us at ease at such an emotional time. The food was exceptional- some of the guests were commenting on how it was the best food they'd ever had at a wedding. The rooms (ceremony room, wedding breakfast room) were decorated beautifully by sophisticated events. The bridal suite was very spacious and felt very premium overlooking the golf course. One of the highlights of the day was the evening reception. Guy the DJ was absolutely brilliant. Very enthusiastic and energetic which got the crowd going. It was a fab atmosphere and guests were commenting on how good the music was. We told Guy what kind of music we liked and he played exactly what we liked. The evening buffet (bacon and sausage butties with chips) was delicious and of very good quality. The hotel reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The maids did a very good job of the room. Guests using the spa said it was lovely and not too crowded. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice in the morning. I cannot recommend Shaw hill enough as a wedding venue.

I was checked into room 22, initially I thought it smelt of extremely strong disinfect, but this was to disguise the smell of damp in the room, the bedding felt damp too. There were wood lice in the bathroom another sign of damp. The wall between the room and the corridor was extremely thin, I could here every word from my neighbours. The only saving grace was the room was clean, but I couldn’t sleep due to the horrid smell. I did ask if I could move room but was informed they were full, I wasn’t offered a refund at any time. The bathroom could be improved with an extraction fan. My relaxing night was definitely spoilt, I had a very tired drive home, not ideal.

Positives about this place are the friendly reception centre staff and the road out. It’s stuck in a time warp, dated and not welcoming at all. The rooms are a total disgrace: 1) They are Baltic 2) Theres no working TV (dark ages and only clear picture on the Tiny Pop Channel 3) There’s one double socket 4) The beds dip in the middle, so you roll in the night 5) The curtains are paper thin and light floods in as soon as the Sun comes up We were told it was a Superior room, I would hate to see a standard. It actually looked nice on the website. In my opinion it’s false advertising, based on what we experienced. How they have the audacity to charge £74 per night is beyond me. We raised our issues and were offered a £10 reduction. It was a complete insult. To make matters worse, the reception staff are extremely opinionated and delusional. Having travelled all over the world, this hotel is by far and away in the top 1% of the worst ever. My recommendation is to avoid this place like the plaque. There are much better options in the surrounding area. Don’t waste your hard earned money people.

Hotel looks nice from the outside and the reception etc are nice. The room we had was very dated, and had a nice layer of dust on the lampshade and soap holder. The bath panel didn't fit properly and there was a hole in the bottom of the shower screen which left a puddle on the floor after use. Staff were pleasant enough but we declined paying £15 (each) for breakfast after seeing the room. Wouldn't stay again.
