Conveniently located on the esplanade this Victorian hotel has unique sea views and benefits from being on a level seafront position. The beach is close by and the shops and holiday attractions of the well-known resort of Ryde are only a short walk away. The hotel is also well-situated for buses, taxis, trains and the hovercraft, so offers the ideal base to travel all around the island as well as over to Portsmouth with its rich maritime history. The seafront position lends itself to some wonderful views from the restaurant and lounges - the perfect place to sit back and relax. A car is ideal for getting around the undulating roads of the Isle of Wight and there is a plethora of things to see and do for all ages. Whether touring historic houses or visiting natural adventure parks, watching the yachting action and festivities of Cowes week, or just relaxing on one of the islands many beaches, you are sure to enjoy the island’s unique charm.

The hotel is a Victorian building and the room was high-ceilinged and overlooked the Solent. The evening meal was very good, and the staff very helpful and attentive. We would certainly book this hotel again.

This was our 4th visit to the Royal Esplanade Hotel in just under 2 years. Our room was comfortable & food at the hotel was delicious. Staff were friendly & helpful. However, I would like to send special thanks to Natalie who looked after our room each day & Liam our waiter. We are already thinking about returning in October

Stayed for 4 nights as part of a coach tour. What can I say! Lovely welcome on arrival Friendly and helpful staff Lovely single bedroom, clean and comfortable. Really enjoyed our meals each day, a hearty breakfast and a good variety and choice of evening meals. Great sea front hotel, within easy walking distance to all shops. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I booked the hotel room through Booking.com and contacted the hotel by telephone to ask for a room upgrade to a room with a sea view. This was done for an additional cost. We stayed in the room, and, known to the hotel reception staff, but not mentioned to me when I arranged the room upgrade, the local night club closes the doors at 3am on a Friday and Saturday, and the clubbers then congregate by the front of the hotel. The raucous noise and bad language from the clubbers starts at 3am and lasts for a couple of hours. It is impossible to sleep through. We did mention this to a receptionist, who 'would report to the management', but agreed that this happens on a Friday and Saturday night. Very disappointed that the hotel were keen to take our money for the room upgrade knowing full well that there would be very bad behaviour at 3am which would wake anybody in the sea view room up.

I hardly ever write reviews and usually when I’ve had a great experience to praise the hotel or restaurant, but when I saw this hotel was rated as 4 stars I just had to give my honest opinion of my experience here. I’m not sure where or when the pictures of food were taken but that was certainly not the quality of food we were served or even offered at this hotel after being told on arrival that we could only have a limited fixed menu choice which we had to choose by 6pm due to there being a ‘couple of large coach groups in’ on the same day. To say the food was mediocre would be kind; very basic but it was edible. I’m not sure who these ‘wonderful staff’ were either! The woman on reception who ‘greeted’ us at check in was miserable and when we checked out we were not even asked if we enjoyed our stay. Which is probably a good thing as we were not very happy overall and would probably have been less that polite. Overall the whole hotel needs a massive facelift. The seating (settees and chairs) in the communal areas was tatty and dirty, the pool table ripped, and the entire decor very dated. We travelled as two couples with a the same ‘Deluxe’ Buy a gift voucher; however, our rooms were not of the same quality. One couple had a room with a window facing a wall and which didn’t open making the room very stuffy and had a much smaller bed than the other. Apart from the clean bathroom, this hotel does not really have any positive features. The shower in one room was possibly the worst I have used in a hotel as it took (no exaggeration) 10 minutes to try to regulate the heat of the water between freezing and scalding and I settled for a luke warm trickle in the end. This hotel was most definitely not ‘deluxe’ in any way and I would not stay there again. Very disappointing.

Hello beverleysimmons Thank you for your feedback. We certainly do not celebrate a less than genuine and friendly welcome for every guest and I apologise that this was not present upon your arrival. Such a shame to not have met your stays expectation on this occasion, we are super proud of our team, restaurant and rooms, as well as our communication in ensuring every guest is aware of the best times and options for their stay. If possible, it would be wonderful if you could open a dialogue by calling our General Manager Bobby so we can investigate the water temperature challenge you faced with the shower please. 01983 562 549 Thank you again for your feedback again beverlysimmons and grateful to have been allowed an opportunity to take this feedback in moving our hotel forward.

We chose this hotel from one of the many available on our ‘Red Letter Day’ gift voucher. We could not have chosen better. The hotel is full of olde worlde charm, and matched by the superb personal service of the staff, from the chambermaid to the owner, whom we met at dinner. The reception staff couldn’t have been more helpful. The food was exceptional, and the wine reasonably priced. Breakfast (included) was excellent. We had a seafront room (72) which whilst not overly generous in size was perfect for us. A large ensuite, tea and coffee facilities, and with dressing gowns and slippers provided. There was even a real telephone…!! If ever we’re back on the IoW., this will be our ‘go to’ hotel destination. John and Helen.

My partner and I visited Royal Esplanade Hotel for a 2 night stay in the Isle of Wight. It is situated in a fantastic location, close to the hovercraft from Portsmouth and near the centre of Ryde right next to a street of restaurants, bars and beach shops. The hotel is slightly dated compared to my usual choice of chain hotels. However, it was a pleasant change and suited the Southsea/IOW/Portsmouth vibe. We arrived to IOW early, and called the hotel to see if there was any way we could check in early. The hotel were so accommodating and allowed us to check in 4 hours early as our room was ready. We were also able to park in the hotel car park for our duration at a small price rate, which was so helpful and uncommon in seafront hotels usually. The front of house staff were nothing short of exceptional, extremely polite and friendly. My only qualm was that on our first night we were told by the man on reception 'you get a meal with your stay, would you like to to take it tonight or tomorrow night?' we were shocked and said we didn't know it came with a meal. He gave us menu's and said no need to pre book. We went to dinner that evening in the hotel and at the end we were charged with the bill. We were shocked as the way it was worded was that it was complimentary with our stay. However, we were more than happy to pay as it was delicious and the sea view was lovely. Just maybe with future guests it needs to be stated that the dinner isn't complimentary with a stay. Our room was very average, but we were happy with it. We had one of the back rooms so it was quite dark and dingey but had everything we needed. The heating worked really well and the shower was lush! However, there were toothpaste remains in the sink as well as lots of hair from a previous guest. The Wifi didn't work throughout the stay. Although that wasn't an issue for me. We really enjoyed going to the bar of an evening which has a cosy vibe with fairy lights ETC. Would also really recommend Harbour House which is a 5 min walk from the hotel for beachfront cocktails and nibbles. Overall a lovely stay, great staff, just would be better if there was a bit more attention to detail and cleanliness.

the siuation of this hotel is ideal! The staff are terrible. We were double charged for our booking. The focus is on the coach guests so we were rudely told that times we could take breakfast, The sea facing room was noisy. The second room was far .There was no Wi fi or cell phone signal in Room 6A One of the worst hotels we have stayed at

Hello SonoraSouthAfrica Thank you for your feedback. Double charging is certainly not in our interest, we like to encourage our guests to visit again and again by offering a fantastic stay and experience. This feels as though we really missed the mark on your stay and I apologise if any upset has risen in emotion during your stay. I have passed your notes onto our management team to fully investigate. Thank you again, we really appreciate having the opportunity to grow with feedback.

I use the term "relic" in a complimentary manner! This lovely historic establishment is extremely well-placed for the Portsmouth and Southsea express links by hovercraft or fast-cat. Very frequent bus and rail departures (virtually on the doorstep) also serve to make the Royal Esplanade a great choice if you choose not to use the very costly car ferry services and come as foot passenger instead. If you do drive over ask about the hotel parking availability as it is rather limited and you will wish to avoid the licensed banditry that represents IOW street parking charges. For those wishing to stay put the hotel is completely central to Ryde town centre but be aware of the very steep hills if you have mobility concerns. The Royal Esplanade will not suit everyone, those who prefer anodyne chain establishments would probably be well advised to stick to those. If, however, you are prepared to exchange blandness for a more patinated high-ceilinged experience with superb sea views then give this hotel a try! Our room was exceptional but of course not everyone can stay in it at once - we were just lucky in the draw (Room 23). The bed was extremely comfortable, plenty of bath towels, slippers and gowns provided and the plumbing was of a good standard as was the furniture and general decor. The staff appeared to be all British and very helpful and there are plenty of lounge, bar and snug areas in the building. I would be very happy to visit this hotel again.
