Recently under New Management, with a great vibe and a new menu, the Union Inn is the first pub you come to on your way into town from Cowes seafront. Its just a short walk from the Red Jet passenger terminal in West Cowes. Ideally located in Cowes Old Town it is close to all the Yacht Clubs and in easy walking distance of the Marina. The Union Inn offers 6 newly refurbished, individually themed, en-suite letting rooms all designed and furnished in a boutique style. A haven for yachting enthusiasts, business people and holiday makers and an ideal all-year-round base from which to explore the Isle of Wight. Now re-open after a month long refurbishment the owner and staff are ready to welcome you to the cosy fireside inn, a peaceful retreat particularly during the seasonal hustle and bustle of Cowes’ many yachting regattas.Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. Cowes comes alive each June for Round The Island Race. The town famously gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later on in the summer, powerboat races are held.

Firstly we visited the inn during Cowes Week so, given how busy everything was, we may need to make allowances, though the room was quite expensive. However, we felt in general that the pub was a bit tired - peeling paint and dust. The bedroom certainly didn’t look much like the photos on the booking site! It wasn’t serving food in the evening and breakfast for the residents was left as a ‘help yourself’ on a table on the landing not even set out in the bar. The beer was apparently great and everyone was very friendly in the bar so this is really a ‘pub with rooms’ which is fine but perhaps needs stressing more on the website. On the positive side - the location not far from the ferry terminal was ideal and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Maybe we just expected too much?

Stayed at the pub with friends while cycling around the island. The staff on arrival were helpful in accommodating our bikes overnight. The stay was spoiled for me by lack of sleep. I was kept awake until 2am by the incessant noise from groups periodically leaning the pub to talk loudly outside in the street and constant banging of the doors beneath my room as people went in and out. Not sure whether this was clientele or staff or both. Complained in the morning to the manager (only available via telephone), who was completely unsympathetic and suggested I shouldn’t stay in a pub in Cowes before Cowes week!

Room Tip: If you do choose to stay here, avoid room 5 (directly over the pub and entrance)

The room (room 4) was very tired and very dusty, which caused my asthma to rear up. One of the light fittings was hanging of the wall. Anyone over 5" would have bumped onto the main light & the lampshade was full of dust. There was a fan, which I wouldn't have dared turn on, as it has do much dust on it. The bathroom was filthy & decrepit. Shower head full of mould & rusty, ventaxia gunked up with many years of dirt & dust & not working. Radiator rusty, probably due to lack of ventilation. Stray hair on toilet. Toilet brush disgusting. We were not advised on arrival that the breakfast would be a paper bag of unhealthy, sweet food instead of the usual cooked breakfast. It was only when we got to the room, that we found out, via a brief information sheet, that they no longer serve proper breakfast. We stayed here 4 years ago and it was very good, with a decent breakfast & a clean room. There was a young girl, on her own, dealing with both the pub & b&b. Not fair for her, as the pub was busy & she had to leave the bar to assist us on arrival. The owners of this pub/b&b should be ashamed of the conditions of both the room & the breakfast. We will not be returning.

Just read all negative reviews on all websitrs before booking as they all seem very accurate. Biggest issue is the filth, not even a cloth/duster passed over all accessible parts of bathroom. Secondly, breakfast is a load of sweet stuff left in a paper bag at top of stairs. Etc......

Well where to start? The premises hasn't seen a contractor for years, the bar staff are miserable looking to say the least and they generally break most licensing laws on a nightly basis. The public toilets have a higher standard of cleanliness, I'd rather drink water from the local piss hole than a pint from this place. Managed by Matt Parker, hated on this Island and would heartily recommend asking any publican if they're part of his group. If so, cancel the order and leave. Horrible person, horrible establishments, horrible staff and horrible produce. Avoid at all costs.

Just a one night stay but our room was very tired. Decoration very slapdash especially around the shower. Plug in sink was jammed shut but a lady came and whacked it to open it - but next time i used it jammed again and stayed that way. The noise from the bar went on until 2am and the banging of doors as the "continental" breakfasts were delivered to the chest of drawers on the landing went on and on. After a dodgy nights sleep at 8:15 the fire alarms went off. Luckily we were packed and ready to go and went outside to join the others in various states of dress. There was an emergency number to call stuck on the door that I rang and a very sleepy lady said she would send someone down to turn it off. No apology and no call to the fire brigade! There are no staff in the place overnight. The super bakery/café just down the road who took us in like refugees said the alarm was often going off at all hours. If you just want a drink - fine - but do NOT stay.

No sleep in Cowes wrote a review Mar 2022

Paid about £100 for us to stay the night but got no sleep so left at 3am and went back to my house. What a waste of money I hear you say!. No thought for the sleeping, paying residents by staff.Staff taking up breakfasts up till 2.30am and letting the inner door bang every single time which everyone must have heard in the building at that the of the morning.Ps..squirt some wd40 on that sign that swings in the wind and creaks all night. For that money all you want is a decent night's sleep. Staffs response when we asked for some sort of refund was we should have got up and confronted the staff at 2am like that's a holiday treat ah!..howabout you tell your staff to be mindful of others sleeping who are paying alot of money for one night.

It’s a great pity this interesting and attractive place does not live up to its advertisements. We chose it for the fact that it’s above a pub that’s rated highly for its food and it’s fire. Arriving, we were told bluntly that’s there’s no food to be had and on the second day that there were to be no fires as they were out of wood. It was a very cold and gloomy day. This is letting down your guests pretty badly, especially with no apology of any kind. Additionally, you’re told bluntly that only cards are accepted, no cash. The fully refurbished room had damage to windows, bathroom tiles were smashed, seals were gross, the rooms were not clean, the rads were always on and could not be adjusted, the “service” to the room consisted of topping up the tea tray- nothing else was done. Breakfast is plastic wrapped items in a paper bag. The building needs a lot of work and is quite shabby. Having said that, the town and location are superb, near the esplanade, the cafe next door, when open, is adorable, the pub is good fun when there is wood to be had! And it all reeks of age and character.

Just not good enough. Arrived to a room with no water, toiletpaper, toiletries and no breakfast having booked a room with full English. It is also not serviced so I guess I stay for 4 days without cleaning the room. When I asked about the packet of sweets in the packet labelled breakfast I was told that the sailors like it that way! I'm a 60 year old from South Africa for goodness sake!! And that's NOT WHAT I PAID FOR.
