Gotten Manor is approached down a long lane in the middle of an area of AONB. It is miles from the beaten track and bordered by stone barns, some of which are self-catering cottages. In the Old House - B/B - (which is described in a will of 1305) there is a choice of two huge en-suite bedrooms with a roll-top bath IN the room. Downstairs is a sitting-room and breakfast room. The walled fruit garden is reserved for guests. There are 3 self-catering cottages - two of which (Cart House 1 and 2) have 2 bedrooms each upstairs and are semi detached and the third - the Milk House has 3 en-suite bedrooms upstairs.

I think we must have been the last people to stay in one of the Cart Houses before lockdown and I have to say I am so glad we went. We have 2 small children and the accommodation was perfect, it had absolutely everything we needed for our week long stay. It was wonderfully clean and the beds were so comfortable, the kids slept brilliantly with the additional black out blinds. Caroline directed us to walks from the house to the downs behind us. So much for kids to see and spectacular views of the sea at the top. We had wintery walks on the beach which were again a highlight for the children. Internet was great, we loved being off the beaten track for the peace and quiet. A truly rare find. I have since spoken to Caroline about returning when it is safe to do so and she is taking every precaution to make sure her guests are safe and comfortable including non contact check ins and additional cleaning. Thanks again Caroline, can't wait to return!

The drive to the B and B was along an 800m very narrow track of broken tarmac and undulations. In places, the brambles were less than 5 feet apart. This lane is not suitable for a low modern saloon, more of a 4 x 4 or tractor. Lots of care would be needed in winter when the ruts and potholes may be filled with water. On arrival, we were met by our host, Caroline who gave a chilly reception. We were shown to our accommodation up steep wooden stairs with a wobbly handrail. The accommodation would be described as rustic, but definitely not rustic chic. Lots of cobwebs and dust and I wasn't keen on the roll-top bath, with ancient plumbing, being in our room. The lavatory was claustrophobic with a very rudimentary finger-operated catch. Downstairs we had a reading room which although comfortable, the lights constantly flickered so regrettably we could not use it. We retired upstairs to continue to read leaving the door open for the circulation of air and was surprised by a visit of a bat. The mammal flew around for several minutes until he/she found its way out, some might be frightened, but we were not phased in the slightest. At breakfast, I asked for hash browns, and her reply was a very curt, 'I don't do that'. The poached eggs on the first day were hard and unappetizing. On the second day, I asked for scrambled eggs that were so solid I left them completely. On the third day, the poached eggs were improved. On a plus, we were offered fresh bread that went very well with the homemade jams and preserves. On our second day, I requested fresh towels as the ones we used were soiled, to which she replied 'No!' however, she did offer to hang them out to dry. I wonder if we would have had fresh towels if we had been staying longer? At night the room was quiet and the sleep we received was very good plus the bed was extremely comfortable. The following morning we asked if she was going into town or to the convenience store at the bottom of the lane could she purchase a Saturday paper for us and again her reply was a very short, No! In all the hotels and B & B's we have stayed in over the years, I have never met a host before who was so unobliging to her paying guests. However, Caroline allowed us to store our bikes in her barn, which was a plus, but not enough for me to want to stay there again, although riding the lanes and tracks on the Island were fantastic.

Dear Paul, Many thanks for your engaging review and apologies for not replying sooner - just updating 2020 prices and came across your comments. I tried so very hard to be 'obliging' but seemingly failed the test. Just before Christmas the Council did up Gotten Lane and it is now very whizzy and marvellous and perfect for all types of vehicles. I am so glad you enjoyed the wonderful Isle of Wight. All the best, Caroline

At the end of a rustic dirt track, you will find this hidden treasure. Caroline, our host, showed us to our room which was clean and comfortable, with some lovely touches (fluffy towels and robes, candles, fresh flowers) there is a huge roll top bath in the room and tea and coffee making facilities. We were served an excellent breakfast, with gluten free options (I am a coeliac) and there is a charming sitting room for guests. Caroline made sure that our stay was perfect. We will certainly be returning!

Different from the rest and host terrific. Good base to explore I.O.W--no need for lunch after a hearty breakfast-- (loads of homemade stuff)--unless you wish to try the local crab as we did!! Beaulieu and Ventnor a must.

We stayed for 7 nights and it truly a remarkable place. About 1/2 mile from the main road and extremely quiet and peaceful place. We had the bedroom with the roll top bath and it contained everything we needed. The breakfasts that Caroline serves up certainly fill you up, so much so that when we were cycling all day nothing else was needed. All in all an excellent place to stay and we would definitely return. Once again many thanks Caroline.

An interesting experience, the room was in a converted barn and had a bath inside the room (rolltop which i love but not easy to get in/out of) and a toilet which had a sloping roof so caused problems for anyone tall. The room certainly had character and the bed was wonderfully comfortable and had a mattress topper. The bed was made every day and the room had the usual tea making facilities. The breakfasts were beautifully presented but not eating meat they became slightly monotonous (eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and sometimes potatoes) although Caroline did us smoked salmon and eggs the final day which was lovely. Homemade jams/marmalade/yoghurt/compote (wonderful) and exciting (different) breads every morning. Good tea served with the breakfast. The manor is down a long narrow track with few passing places and we met cars/tractors occasionally. Good value and a little quirky.

Lovely old place, beautiful clean room with additional touches to make your stay enjoyable. Candles, plunger coffee a roll top bath with shower, even some fresh biscuits in a tin. Good tv and wifi. Beautiful breakfast in a lovely clean room, with a large plunger of coffee. Caroline is lovely and makes sure that your stay is enjoyable without intruding. Very comfy bed.

We stayed in the milk house. The location was prefect. Lovely big kitchen. Only down side was the furniture is a tad dated. Also one of the beds had springs sticking out and desperately needs replaced (my husband didn't sleep well for 2 days due to this) Apart from that I do recommend this lovely little place. Also a 10am checkout after a 3pm check in - means you leave in a bit of a rush. Lady was very helpful though and the place is lush.

Dear Nicola, It was lovely to have you all to stay and thank you so much for your comments. I have since tested all the beds and worked out hopefully which mattress needed replacing - now all done - again, thank you for pointing that out to me. I am sorry you felt a bit rushed- those times are obviously a guide but we only have a short window of approx. 4hrs to do a complete house clean to make the cottage welcoming for our next guests. All the best, Caroline

I found here by accident and had no intention of staying on the Isle of Wight. But thank goodness I did. Caroline is so lovely and her manor home is beautiful deeply beautiful. Her deep bath, candlelit, sat within the room, her exquisite bed linen, wickedly good biscuits, hidden away on the island will long stay in my memory as an exceptional visit. I had to return again and really cannot wait to stay for longer. The brilliant green missy steps, the huge hare sat outside the door, waking to adorable bird calls, it’s pure magic. I am so pleased to have found here. The ferry and the passenger ferry and hovercraft were so easy to commute over to the mainland to work once I’d had it all explained to me. Great to come home to such a soul filled place after a days work. Exceptional

Booked both coach houses for a family of 6 adults and one child(3) for my mums 60th. The most wonderful family holiday. Ideal for a family to be in close proximity, it meant the 3 year old could run between houses. Lots of space to relax with the two gardens. Coach houses themselves had plenty of space in bedrooms and the living areas. Great to cook in and host. Location itself is very secluded and so nice and quiet, not touristy at all, there is a few walks directly from the house that are well worth doing, even take a picnic! Would recommend to friends and family.
