The hotel is nice and pleasurable, beautifully located on a hill with a view over Longyearbyen (only a 10-15 minute walk to the town centre). We really enjoyed the cosy feeling in Funken (the hotel bar) and we also enjoyed the food, both dinner and breakfast, at Funktionærmessen (the hotel restaurant). The hotel facilities are quite nice, preserving the classic... More

Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding your recent stay at the hotel. Our restaurant was recently awarded a listing in the Scandinavian White Guide so we are happy to hear that the food prepared for breakfast and for dinner met with your approval. The hotel does indeed have historical significance for Longyearbyen whilst we keep... More

This hotel at the top of the hill is great! It is a traditional building but will all the modern-day comforts that you could want. Don’t be put off by the hill. A walk from one end of town to the other takes 10 – 15 minutes depending on your fitness level. If you book tours they will pick you... More

Many thanks for your lovely review Ruth and Nick, it's fantastic to hear that our traditional hotel met with your expectations and that you appreciated the stunning views the elevated location affords. We do endeavour to maintain a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all our Arctic explorers and hope to see you both again in the near future. Thomas More

Went there in January(dark season) with my girlfriend. We were upgraded at no additional cost from Coalminer's cabins due to Coalminers being closed for the season, so we got a very good price. First thing you notice when you get into the hotel, is the dressing room. You enter into a large area for dressing and undressing your large outdoors... More

'Fantastic review of the top of the world', thank you for writing to let us know what you both thought of your stay here during the Polar night. So many great tips for future guests, though we do of course hope to be able to welcome yourselves back soon as well. Waffles, cosy beds, helpful assistance .... welcome to Svalbard!... More

What a view! Nice, but not extraordinary rooms. The beds feel like they might do with being replaced. Very vow an, also due to the no-shoes policy. The conference rooms where well equipped and served our needs. Nice walk to the center of the town.

I stayed there as part of my cuise arrangements. The hotel is nice and clean. The buffet breakfast is fine as well as the restaurant. The hotel is located a bit outside of the center, but you can easily walk 10min.

Our third holiday in Longyearbyen and as usual we stayed at Spitsbergen Funken Hotel. This cosy and historic hotel is situated between the towncenter and Nybyen (and the Longyearbreen glacier) and offers a superb view of the harbour, mountains and glaciers. Everything is easily reached from this hotel. The breakfast buffet is the very best, the rooms are very good,... More

It's a nice hotel. Be aware that it is outside the main downtown area. So plan on a nice 15 minute walk to the heart of downtown, uphill on the way home. (Cabs are about 80 NOK from the Radisson Blu if you're at the furthest end of town and don't want to hike back up because you're tired or... More

On a Hill but walking distance to city centre, this is most historical hotel in town. 4 stars? Maybe, considering deep "pole north" location. I particularly appreciated common areas, very take a beer or drink a coffee overlooking from Windows and relaxing on sofas. Rooms are quite small but with great view, with flat tv and full bathrooms, only a... More

Lovely hotel. Room was lovely. Staff we're helpful when we asked where a place was and even booked us a taxi to the airport. Loved the little areas you could go and sit with free tea and coffee (highly appropriated due to a long wait for our flight). There was a handy area where you could store your suitcases as... More

Stayed both before and after an Arctic cruise. Hotel warm and staff very welcoming. First night we were in a back room overlooking the hill. Room fine, comfortable bed, good shower. All in all fine. Second night we were in a front room and surprised by lack of blackout curtains, particularly as these rooms faced the midnight sun. As the... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
At Spitsbergen Hotel you can enjoy modern comforts in historical surrounds – the foundations this impressive building were set back in 1946. The building soon became known as ‘Funken’, as it housed the single administrative workers or ‘funksjonærer’, as well as being the reception centre for the mining company ‘Store Norske’. The building was a hive of activity and social activity for the company’s office workers. It was only in the middle of the 1980s that the last office workers moved out, and ‘Funken’ began to be used as housing for visitors. In 1993 the building was bought by Spitsbergen Travel, at which point extensions were made including the new restaurant. Throughout the additions and renovations, serious work has been done to protect the unique history and atmosphere of Spitsbergen Hotel – we hope you enjoy it, and your stay! ... more   less
