Pros: Excellent ambiance - definitely a Heritage hotel maintained over the years and carries a rich history

Excellent Continental food

Very good size room

Excellent staff

Cons:
Located at aplace where all the long haul buses terminates and proceed for trips

Rooms are not sound proof, as result, since early morning you will hear the buses disgorging passengers and the consequent noises.

Not on the beach. You may have to spen anywhere around Rs. 50 to go to the beach by a ToTo.

The reception does not make any effort to explain the facilities available on the site. You have to make an effort to discover it. Nor there any reading material in the room to describe the facilities available.

All the facilities like bathroom slippers, dental kit, shaving kit, shower cap, loofah, hair dryer etc. are available but are issued on demand basis. So much so, that when I enquired over the phone if Hair Dryer is availabe in the room, the receptionist siad, NO, but did not even bothered to say that yes, it may be available in the room on demand. Sometimes the receptionists assume an attitude that they are not working for Chanakya, but for Indian Railways and consider themselves as Government employees.

The rooms could have been little more appointed, in the sense that they could have better quality furniture and safe deposit lockers in the rooms.

We have been contemplating a visit to Puri for a long time now and then it happened in the first week of February this year. Although we have been to Puri many time for the holy darshan of Lord Jaganath getting an opportunity to go again is always divine.
We have stayed at many places but BNR holds a special place in our families collective memory. My grandfather was a part of the BNR and then later NFR and we had visited this amazing property over a period of decades. Visiting again after many years and staying at the amazing property was a revelations. BNR now has a digital outreach and the response time is faster than many hotels globally. From writing to the amazing general manager Mr. Kumar and finalizing the rooms was a 30 mins affair which I think is really fast! Mr. Kumar and his team arranged everything for us from a pickup from the Bhubaneswar airport to Puri. From helping us with a small bug in the room late at night and also getting tea upstairs for elderly parents at odd hours they did all that with a smile. The team at the restaurant led by Mr. Rao was amazing where they served great food - simple and delicious. I can go on and on about the good stuff there at BNR but you need to stay at this HERITAGE property to understand and imbibe the feeling and enjoying a slice of the lost times. Huge rooms and bathrooms, Amazing hallways, huge open spaces all around and lovely preservation of the heritage structure. The property does have some shortcoming like a lift for the 1st floor rooms and not great selection of food but the pluses overshadow the negatives. This is one of the best hotels by way of rooms and stay comfort anywhere in the world at the pricepoint that its offered. Go and Do stay at this place once during your puri travels.

The hotels location is pretty nice as from some of its room's deck you can have a view of the sea and its also quite close to the temple the hotel building is very well maintained and is very beautiful and provides a peek into the railways during the british era . The rooms are quite spacious and each room is named after erstwhile princely railways of india . It even has a pool and a lot of activities such a table tennis . The only thing that is not so good is the breakfast which needs some improvement but the food ordered for lunch and dinner is nice

When we entered BNR Chanakya Puri in the evening, the sea breeze was blowing, the hotel was decked up with golden lights and we were provided a warm welcome and taken to our respective rooms. After freshening up, we spent the next couple of hours in the easy chairs of the vast hallway enjoying the sea breeze. And that became our routine over the next 2 days.

The rooms are huge, well appointed with heritage furniture and very much comfortable and we had a very good sleep the 3 nights that we were there.

Room service, staff behaviour and attention to detail needs to be spelt out - very good.

The restaurant serves very good food too.

Our stay at BNR Chanakya Ranchi and then subsequently at BNR Puri has reinforced my belief that the BNR Chanakya group has really taken good care of heritage properties.

A few points which could have made the stay 5 star rated are:
1. Continental food was mentioned in the menu card but was not available since the continental chefs were on leave. If we had to order for continental food then we would have to order it beforehand which was inconvenient for us. Anyway we did order grilled chicken and caramel custard and when the food came out, it turned out to be tasty.

2. Before 2015 the sea was directly accessible and could be seen from the balcony and I can only imagine the charm of those days. I had even heard that there was a library where one could curl up in easy chairs with a book.

3, Lift is not present which makes it difficult for senior citizens to go to the first floor.

The hotel has basic facilities. For everything we have to keep calling room service- towels, shower gels, etc. But to top it all when I asked for a bottle (500ml) milk for my infant they charged me ₹158. This was totally bizarre disappointing. The property could have been maintained properly the female at the reception couldn’t even take the feedback and started passing sarcastic comments. Would recommend not to stay here with kids and family.

We took 2 rooms for 3 nights and had a great stay. Property is well maintained with greenery all over the place. Cleanliness is top class and could see housekeeping wiping the common spaces thrice during the day. They have rooms on ground floor as well as 1st floor but my suggestion would be to go for ground floor to have easy access to lawns, pool and restaurant. Rooms are decent sized with all amenities. If you still need anything they will arrange it for you. Food is very good too. Hotel is at a walking distance from the railway station and bus stand but not in a crowded area. For Shri Jagannath Temple visit, you can also ask for Panda's number from reception to have a hassle free visit.

I stayed at Chanakya Hotel, Puri on Saturday night, January 22 with an Indian friend. We had planned to stay there for 3 nights but after the first night, it was enough!

This hotel is a historical heritage hotel and the setting is nice. So, it's normal the price of rooms are highter than simple hotel in the city. But for the price we paid for the room ( 4400 INR), the rate quality / price is not really what we can expect.

We had one of the worst room, near the lobby (number 5), no chairs outside, the door is not soundproof, it was really difficult to have hot water in the shower (we had only lukewarm water), the pool was not working.
I think that for this price (and it was the cheapest room) we can get a better quality of services.
I wrote to the manager of the hotel to express my opinion. He replied ( at least it deserves to underline) " please do accept my sincere apologies for the same. I assure you that the same is not the usual Chanakya experience we aim to deliver to our guests"
But i don't believe it could better...
We moved to an other hotel ( historical too), in the same area which really bear no comparison for the quality/ price.

Old Grand British Colonial type of hotel. High ceilings. Very good sized rooms. Excellent food. Good buffet breakfast. Courteous, polite and efficient staff, amiable General Manager. Only drawback is that the hotel is not on the beach. And for this, the guests are, in general, matured and well behaved. You won't see wet undergarments hanging from each balcony, resulting from the sea bath, which is a common sight in all the hotels near the beach.

I've been going to BNR for many generations now and each trip is a wonderful experience. I was there recently and the old atmosphere still prevails. The staff is courteous and caring and the management is efficient and takes individual care. The surroundings have been beautifully maintained and remind one of past regal times. The glossy red floors from old times are as well maintained now as they were in the past, The verandas open on to beautiful lawns where one can take a morning stroll. I wish I could give individual names of those who were there for every wish, either in food or room, but I think my list of names would be unending. Anyhow, if anybody wants a superb holiday which reminds one of old times and gives modern amenities, I would strongly recommend the BNR in Puri.
