Ri Kynjai translates into Khasi as land of serenity. This Spa-Resort presiding over the picturesque Umiam lake 16kms from Shillong is aptly named "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake". The architecture is inspired and derived from the original Khasi thatch huts. Supported on tall circular stilts on the terrace of the hotel blocks are the hybrid cottages derived from vernacular Khasi architecture. These cottages serve to portray the transition from tradition to modernity and have an interpretation of the traditional upturned boat roof done in metallic thatch fused to modern gables. Each cottage has a fireplace in the living/ bedroom area and the mezzanine floor has an additional bedroom arrangement.

The Hotel is away from the central part of Shillong city, overlooking the magnificent waters of Umiam lake, also known as Bara Pani by the locals. The property has 17 rooms in total, 5 cottages and 9 rooms. The rooms accommodating us overlooked the lake and the view was just marvellous to behold. The rooms are superfluous on space and are well kept. Bath tub/shower/toilets are all well cleaned and hygienic. The staff is very friendly and cordial. Food at the restaurant is basic and Breakfast in the morning is not a very inviting spread that one would find at a high class hotel. The hotel itself is far off from the city and this is its biggest drawback. If you are visiting Shillong as a tourist, perhaps you would like to stay at this hotel for a day or two, but definitely not for the entirety of your trip because the time that you would spent for commuting would be a real drag on your energy. Final verdict: Stay for serenity at the last day of your trip, when you just wanna relax and return. Don't miss it, its breathtaking beautiful.

We’re a group of 20+ old college classmates that meet for a 3-4 day retreat every November. The 2024 honour went to Ri Kynjai, aptly named Serenity by the Lake.
Constructed in solid wood and stone, it blends in seamless harmony into the forest slope leading down to Umiam Lake, and the view from the cottages (both rooms and balconies) instantly puts you into a happy and contemplative mood. The rooms are insulated well enough that our buzzing party in one room did not disturb the other rooms.
The restaurant is excellent - you must try the local Khasi fare such as jadoh, dohsniang, as well as plenty of vegetarian options. Of course, there’s more familiar Indian food also on offer - theme being simple and delicious.
The spa offers many options in terms of massage treatments. Do try the Khasi massage - it works on the nerves as well as the muscles, just feels different from the standard Swedish/sports massage.
The staff was pleasingly attentive and friendly without being intrusive.
Highly recommended any time of year! Had a blast (obviously a lot of it had to do with friends!)

I often visit this property with my family as it is the easiest getaway from Guwahati with an amazing location. The property is well maintained and now they have added air conditioners to the lake view cottage which has become a must coz it can get hot especially in summers. Otherwise the rooms are super spacious, cozy and good to just relax. But beyond a day it may become boring as there is nothing else to do.

Words cannot describe how beautiful this hotel is. Impeccably decorated with every detail taken care of . Lake view room is a must. Extremely spacious and well appointed, a cute electric fireplace , lovely verandah with a superb view of the lake and the sun rise , large bathrooms with a tub , changing cubicle with a closet and dresser.

They also have the superior lake view cottage rooms which are a level higher in category… but apart from a marginally larger verandah , a very small single attic bed on top , a jacuzzi which is only a part of the small bathtub
… the cottage has got more or less the same view as the lake view rooms. So not worth the extra money

The restaurant was nice with a good variety of dishes. Service was a bit slow.
The hotel has a gazebo which we booked on one of the nights for Rs 5900/- since we were a large group of friends.

The hotel is very far from the main town and all the tourist attractions. So one must be certain what is the purpose of your visit before staying here.

This hotel is meant to relax and enjoy the ambience , food and the views.

Would definitely highly recommend this Hotel.

We visited the northeast region for a week, stayed in 4 hotels, and this was by far the best hotel. It’s in my top 5 hotels for nicest stay ever. The room and especially the bathroom is beautifully designed and the decor in the rest of the hotel is fresh, artistic, and beautifully integrated into the location. Our room had a spectacular view of the mountain and lake and I got up early to catch the morning glow before sunrise. Breakfast was delicious. Service was attentive and the turn down service was an extra treat.

Only the property is well done, except that nothing is good.

We reached there at around 6 in the evening. The place was dark and no one was there to receive us at the entrance, we had to figure out the reception from a guest.
We did not feel welcomed as the staff were very cold.

Though the rooms are large but are not maintained, the bed of room no 11 broke on the very first night. Hot water has restricted timings and there was no pressure in the shower.

The restaurant is pathetic, on the very first dinner we had ordered white rice for our kid and to our surprise, there was a dead fly in it.

The breakfast had limited options and most of the vessels were empty as they were not refilling the same.

The restaurant staff are not well trained, I had asked for cutlery and napkins and the waiter handed me a dirty napkin, out of irritation I threw the napkin on the other table and he did neither pick that up nor replace it.

There is a path to the lake which they have just kept for the sake of it. they could have developed that and made it attractive

while checking out I requested for the feedback form for which the lady at the reception handed over me a regular notepad.

while booking I had too much expectation from this property but on arrival, all were gone down the drain.

Very beautiful resort...scenic view from the cottage room of the lake and mountains. Food is very good.

We were 25 batchmates having fun together for 3 nights and hotel and staff provided great service.

The only this to plan is that the place has many levels - reception, rooms, bfst room, gardens so visitors with legs issues will have a problem as they don't have lifts!!

The place is 26 kms before Shillong (coming from Guahati). One should largely plan to stay in the resort and enjoy it. Doing single day trips from here to Cherpunji, Dwaki etc is not a great idea. The traffic takes too much time.

Great Property Great Service Great Hospitality. Would have given 6/5 had the booking office not only thought of robbing the customer but also look at the customer. Inspite of no light in the hotel for over 13 hours no compensation was even offered. Inspite of paying for a singer and the hotel not being able to provide for the venue payment for a non existent singer was taken. The singer had a cold and cough and couldn’t sing but still that was. It considered. All Reena at the booking / marketing was interested was rob the customer. Full marks to Rani , Mishraji and their team at site for looking after each detail.

If you are looking for a place which offers you tranquility and peace without compromising on the quality and comforts of life, then you are in for a real treat. I have been eyeing to stay at this property for ages and now finally got a chance to spend 3 solid nights at the authentic Khasi architecturally brilliant space.
The charm of this place is that it offers you everything without compromising on the environmental/natural and cultural integrity of Meghalaya.
The views are stunning to say the least and it is certainly away from the hustle bustle of the city.
The entire hotel staff is very prompt and attentive. The F&B staff including Thomas Marak, Anthony, Mishra and others have been super helpful in their suggestions and service. The turndown services were excellent.
The reception staff including Mr.Yasam was also quick with his suggestions for sight seeing spots and restuarant suggestions in the town. He kindly ensured that all our requests were catered to.
There is a beautiful small trail leading upto the lake which is a great way to get yourself moving in the morning.

Food: Chinese and Indian cuisine was better than the local cuisine at the Sao Aiom. Would certainly expect better Khasi/ North eastern cuisine.

Bonus: This is the first time i have genuinely liked a welcome drink offered by the a hotel. Usually it is canned stuff but they offered a nice warm ginger lemon honey drink. Staff behaviour was very cordial.

Scope for Improvement: The property could do with the a gym/temperature controlled swimming pool/jacuzzi. It would escalate the experience for someone wanting to unwind for 2-3 days. Also, for the price they are commanding, the hotel should offer either of the options.

Writing this review sitting in one of the most serene places we have ever stayed in, overlooking a wonderful calm lake, with the sun just rising in front of me.
We were originally booked for what is known as one of India’s best location and service hotels in Shimla, we canceled that due to excessive snow. And came here, totally worth the stay in the Lake View Cottage, with a fireplace, Jaccuzi and a really spacious wooden room.
If you are a nature lover and don’t mind travelling to reach this place, just book it. Everything is awesome here, from the time of booking the interaction with the staff, the welcome we received, the location, the rooms and overall service.
It’s peace personified.
If food could be improved a little, it would add to the hotel class, but otherwise it’s just enough to fill your tummy with limited choices for vegetarians. As we stayed for 5 days, we kind of new the menu options by heart, so that tells you about the options!
If you are someone who wants to sleep till late with blackout curtains, then the lake view cottage is not for you. It’s as bright as it could be at even 6.10 am in February! The cottage has light coming in from the ceiling which for people like us makes it even more beautiful. The wooden floor does creak when we walk, but that’s the con of having an awesome wooden interior.
One disadvantage if I could call it a disadvantage is that it takes a minimum of 1.5 to 2 hours to reach any sightseeing place, except the Umiam lake. This is because there is massive mismanagement of the traffic with no signals from as early as 7am!! So if you are interested to go to Dawki, Jowai, Cherrapunjee, Mawlynnong village, or forest keep 4 hours or more as the total travel time.
We opted to enjoy the property for more than 2 days, and it was wise decision. There’s a small walkway to the lake from here, it’s filled with oxygen and pretty little birds if you have an eye to spot them.
To sum it up, Ri Kynjai is indeed serenity by the lake, meant for people from busy metro cities like us to come and fill lungs with oxygen!
