I had already been there three times in past one year with family and near friends.
This has become my home away from home with all the amenities and at the lap of nature.
Food - veg or non-veg is yummy yummy.. Pandit Sharma knows culinary art... Under able hands of Rameshji Khatavkar, all attention is paid to your comforts. Staff are very friendly.
Relaxed feeling in the lap of nature... You can see Matheran Train chugging across Tea Table of Woodside!!
Breathe pure in lap of nature...
Staff is very courteous.
Dinner and lunch was served in the room lounge that too hot. It was an amazing experience.
Maharajah room has a personal pool in the room this was fun with the kids.
we were group of 7 people & had a great time...its little far from Matheran Station but its acceptable as far as you get privacy & peace of mind.
Food- not great...they serve non veg on paying extra ....try ordering different cuisines but its all the same...breakfast was basic..they serve eggs but pay extra not included in the package..
you can have bath with hot water only in the mornings..7:30-10:30 is the time you will get hot water...
The staff is nice n helpful n prompt in their service...
Kids will enjoy since the property has a big playarea...
I think they can do better than what it is now...
We have stayed at a few places in the past and this time it was Woodside retreat.
My review of Woodside Retreat:
1. Reception: Ms Mary who handles the booking in Mumbai and Mr Khatavkar who manages the hotel are very friendly, flexible and co-operative in every aspect that they could manage.
2. The hotel rooms: Like you cannot compare Hollywood with Bollywood, one cannot compare Lords central /The Veranda with Woodside. But on value for money if you want a homely, comfortable place after a rough trek in the woods, then this is the place for you.Nerukars who own this place are architects by profession and the resort reflects the tasteful design.
3. Room #14 and 15 offer the best views
4. The hotel is walkable from the Dasturi Naka. So in case you miss the train from Aman lodge /dasturi naka you can reach without getting fleeced by the horse walas who get your pockets lighter by atleast Rs 700 for transporting just two people
5.Unlike Woodlands & Cecil in this category of price (which are deeper into the woods), this hotel is road touching , hence access is easy
6. Monkey menace is comparatively lesser
7.Staff members have pleasant helpful attitude.
8.The food is really amazing and homely and they serve with a smile. The chef too is quite compliable for customization in dishes as per our liking.
Suggestions for Woodside:
1. The hotels sign board is rusted at corners. Glowing signboards like the ones that Lords Central have would look better
2. There should be neon signs/light reflectors on the edges of the footsteps all throughout the hotel to avoid people slipping down when walking in the night.
3.One cannot keep the windows open since there are no mosquito nets . Mosquito, big spiders and all the creepy creatures make their way in your rooms in teh night!! .Installling nets will give the patrons the option of fresh air whenever they want the windows open /view the nature and at the same time avoid insetcs bothering you.
Overall Rating: 4/5
General tips for travelers to Matheran in monsoon:
1. Avoid getting infants and elderly people. Climate is super damp and hence not suitable for them.Always keep a high powered torch and your chargers handy. If posssible , try to buy essential snack items/medicines for cold etc at Neral station since you would end up spending 2 times the normal MRP on everything in Matheran.
2. Choose your footwear wisely. Avoid regular chappals/slippers/shoes since it becomes difficult to walk in those in heavy rains combined with rocky/slippery slopes. No wonder footwear business stalls are atleast 10 in number but not a single fresh fruit juice or a good Wada pav stall !!
3. I was reminded of the Piped pipers story when everyone blindly follows the horeswalas to the various points for as as high as Rs 600-700 for 12 points/person. It is not really worth it since in rains due to the huge layer of fog, one just cannot watch anything from anypoint. The right season to spend time visiting the points is right after rains since hills are green and the fog envelop is comparatively lesser.
Instead, opt for going on a nature trail upto early evening .Then relax at the hotel after food and again enjoy evening in the market .
4. I feel shabbir biryani is overrated and unfortunately it has lost out to many better options available at Matheran. Maybe it was really good once upon a time in its hey days but now you have much better options
5. I have always wondered how Non-AC rooms sell in Matheran .Even if it is a cold season, since most of the hotel rooms do not have ventilatory windows ,people in Non AC rooms tend to get suffocated .Customers are then forced to go for Ac rooms at a higher cost. Avoid this trap while negotiating.
Overall I personally feel the Matheran is beauty personified in rains .In case one can afford to visit on working day then you can avoid the crowds & at the same time can negotiate as high as 50% reductions at all service points.
Alternatively try to reach on a Friday evening , hence you will have Saturday and Sunday mornings at your disposal to explore the serene surroundings.
